    Abstract
    This is a revisionist study of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century satires on science with an emphasis on the writings of Jonathan Swift and, to a lesser degree, Samuel Butler and other satirists. To say, as some literary commentators do, that the satirists attacked only pseudo-scientists who failed to employ the empirical method properly is to beg a crucial question: how could the satirists possibly have distinguished the genuine scientist from the crank? By a failsafe set of Baconian principles perhaps? No, the matter is more complicated. I read the satiric literature on early modern science against a totally different understanding of what science is, how it came into being, and how it developed.

    Occasioned by Reading a Maxim in Rochefoucault, "Dans l'adversitŽ de nos meilleurs amis nous trouvons quelque chose, qui ne nous deplaist pas."
    Written by Himself, November 1731 As Rochefoucault his maxims drew
    From nature, I believe 'em true:
    They argue no corrupted mind
    In him; the fault is in mankind.
    This maxim more than all the rest
    Is thought too base for human breast;
    "In all distresses of our friends
    We first consult our private ends; While nature, kindly bent to ease us, Points out some circumstance to please us."

    Swift, Jonathan Biography
    Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) - pseudonyms: Isaac Bickerstaff, A Dissenter, A Person of Qauality, A Person of Honour, M.B. Drapier, T.R.D.J.S.D.O.P.I.I. (The Reverend Doctor Jonathan Switft, Dean of Partick's in Ireland) Irish author and journalist, dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral (Dublin) from 1713, the foremost prose satirist in English language. Swift became insane in his last years, but until his death he was known as Dublin's foremost citizen. Among Swift's best known works is Gulliver's Travels (1726), where the stories of Gulliver's experiences among dwarfs and giants are best known. Swift gave to these journeys an air of authenticity and realism and many contemporary readers believed them to be true. "They look upon fraud as a greater crime than theft, and therefore seldom fail to punish it with death; for they alledge, that care and vigilante, with a very common understanding, may preserve a man's goods from thieves; but honesty hat no fence against superior cunning: and since it is necessary that there should be a perpetual intercourse of buying and selling, and dealing upon credit; where fraud is permitted or connived at, or hath no Law to punish it, the honest dealer is always undone and the knave gets the advantage." (from Gulliver's Travels: 'A Voyage to Lilliput') "As the common forms of good manners were intended for regulating the conduct of those who have weak understandings; so they have been corrupted by the persons for whose use they were contrived. For these people have fallen into a needless and endless way of multiplying ceremonies, which have been extremely troublesome to those who practice them, and insupportable to everyone else: insomuch that wise men are often more uneasy at the over civility of these refiners, than they could possibly be in the conversations of peasants or mechanics."

    Irish-born Anglican clergyman Jonathan Swift, also known as Dean Swift, who was also a cousin to John Dryden. A political pamphleteer and piercing satirist, Swift wrote his masterpiece
    Irish satirist and Anglican cleric. His best-known work is (1726), an allegory (symbolic story with meaning beyond its literal sense) describing travel to lands inhabited by giants, miniature people, and intelligent horses. His satirical talents are evident in the pamphlet A Modest Proposal The Tale of a Tub (1704), attacking corruption in religion and learning. His lucid prose style is simple and controlled and he imparted his views with fierce indignation and wit.

    In the meantime he had grown tired of Irish life and was glad to accept Temple's proposal for his return to Moor Park, where he continued until Temple's death in January 1699. During this period he wrote much and burned most of what he had written. He read and learned even more than he wrote. Moor Park took him away from brooding and glooming in Ireland and brought him into the corridor of contemporary history, an intimate acquaintance with which became the chief passion of Swift's life. His Pindaric Odes , written at this period or earlier, in the manner of Cowley, indicate the rudiments of a real satirist, but a satirist struggling with a most uncongenial form of expression. Of more importance was his first essay in satiric prose which arose directly from the position which he occupied as domestic author in the Temple household. Sir William had in 1692 published his Essay upon Ancient and Modern Learning , transplanting to England a controversy begun in France by Fontenelle. Incidentally Temple had cited the letters of Phalaris as evidence of the superiority of the Ancients over the Moderns. Temple's praise of Phalarisled to an Oxford edition of the
