Frost Tolerance of Corn and Soybean
As small grain planting is finishing up, producers are getting anxious to start with corn and soybeans. There is some concerns with frost that should be addressed. The average last 28 degree and 32 degree frost date for Cooperstown are May 11th and May 21 respectfully.
Corn: The minimum germination temperature for corn is 50 degrees. Corn can handle early season frosts due to the position of the growing point. Corn has an elongating first internode and coleoptile method of seedling emergence. Hence, the growing point is still below the soil surface and can regrow if injured by frost. Also, this type of emergence allows for deeper planting depths up to five inches.
Soybeans: The minimum germination temperature for soybean is 50 degrees. Soybeans have an active hypocotyl method of seedling emergence. This type of emergence, the growing point is above ground upon emergence. Thus it is succeptible to frost once emerged. Soybeans are easily damaged in the 28 to 32 degree range. Temperatures of 28 degrees for any extended period of time can completely kill soybean plants (stems and leaves) Recommended planting dates are from May 10th to May 25th. One concern for 2004 is if the crop is injured by frost, is there enough seed of desired varieties available if reseeding is necessary. This is one of the risks for early seeding.

BIOGRAPHY
Born in Logan, Utah, May Swenson received a bachelor's degree from Utah State University in 1939. It was not until 1954, however, that she published her first volume of poetry, entitled Another Animal , followed two more books: A Cage of Spines (1958), and To Mix With Time New and Selected Poems (1963). During this time, from 1959 through 1966, she served as an editor at New Directions and held a number of teaching positions at Bryn Mawr, the University of North Carolina, the University of California, Riverside, Purdue University, and Utah State University. She also published a volume of translations of contemporary Swedish poetry entitled Iconographs (1970). Poetry, for Swenson, allowed access to what she described as "the vastness of the unknown beyond [one's] consciousness." Until her death in 1989, she remained a prolific writer whose books of poetry included

May Swenson's "Pigeon Woman"
This paper presents a critical analysis of the poem "Pigeon Woman" by May Swenson. Paper #: # of words: Written: Author: Evie Mueller
Abstract
From The Paper
"The poem entitled, "Pigeon Woman" by May Swenson is primarily a poem that describes through the use of imagery and illustrates to us readers the effects of old age in the perception of other people, and the ole person as well. Aside from the important theme of old age and trying to defy it, Swenson also tells us of the difficulties that an old- aged woman experiences, how her everyday life seemed to be almost always a routine, how, for a woman of old age, life has been gentle or hard for her. Through the use of strong imagery, symbolism, contrasts, metaphors, alliterations, and internal rhymes, the author of this paper will discuss the themes of old age and coping and living with old age, and the Pigeon Woman's need for love and care in May Swenson's poem, "Pigeon Woman.""

USS Lyman K. Swenson , a 2200-ton Allan M. Sumner class destroyer built at Bath, Maine, was commissioned in May 1944. Following an Atlantic shakedown she went to the Pacific, where she was to serve continuously for twenty-seven years. From September 1944 to the end of the war with Japan in August 1945, Lyman K. Swenson was active in operations off Leyte, Luzon, the China and Indochina coasts, the Japanese home islands and Okinawa. After a brief post-war return to the U.S., she deployed to the Western Pacific in 1946-47, then spent a few years training Naval Reservists along the U.S. Pacific coast. In March 1950, Lyman K. Swenson again went to the Far East where the late June outbreak of the Korean War soon involved her in vigorous combat activities. In three tours off Korea in 1950-53, she performed shore bombardment, blockading, and fleet screening duties. Her role in the September 1950 Inchon invasion is especially notable. After the Korean Armistice, Lyman K. Swenson

Richard,
Welcome to the learning-org. I'm Dave Swenson, a forensic psychologist and
management prof in Duluth, MN. I work with the local police, corrections,
and social services on psych evals, training, and research. I read your
intro and was pleased to see we have mutual interests in the Wheatly, et
al authors. I'm trying to apply these principles to therapy interventions
and am looking for some people to generate a dialoginterested?
In particular, I find much of systems theory fascinating, but sometimes too abstruse for application. I'd like to find some concrete examples of applications that I can use in teaching and training. For example, using the systems idea of amplification of cycles I'm working on a way to help therapists identify when/where a decision node occurs in an interaction.
