Living Within Our Means: The Foundations of Sustainability , by Dr. John Robinson and Caroline Van Bers, offers an overview of the foundations of a truly sustainable society. Ecologically, development must ensure that life support systems are maintained, biodiversity is protected and natural resources are used efficiently. Socially, people must be able to satisfy their basic needs, live in a healthy environment, and be free from oppression and exploitation. Economically, human welfare must be "dematerialized" – separated from dependence on material resources and energy. This can happen by replacing wasteful technologies with knowledge and efficient design. 65 pages. March 1996. $15, includes shipping.

Letter to David Suzuki
from
Kevin Solway
November 6, 1994 Dear David, Well, it's been an age since I received your postcard turning down our offer of honourary membership in our Atheist Society, and I've finally decided to respond. To jog your memory, you said "I believe that my position is based on an act of faith, just as a theist's is. I don't believe you can prove or disprove the existence of God." Your statement indicates to me that your belief (that you can't prove or disprove the existence of God) is not merely a belief, as one would believe, say, in evolution for example, but is in fact something you hold to be a certainty. One "believes" in evolution until such time as the evidence favours another understanding. But your belief that you can't prove or disprove the existence of God is something you hold to be an absolute truth, impervious to anything. You claim to know with certainty that all knowledge is uncertain, but are seemingly blind to the obvious meaninglessness of this notion. You should know there are two kinds of knowledge. Firstly there is scientific knowledge, which is any knowledge based on observation and measurement, and is obviously an uncertain knowledge. Then there is philosophic or purely reasoned knowledge, which has nothing to do with observation and measurement, but is based on definitions, and provides certain knowledge.

1988 January
Dr. David Suzuki co-authored this volume with writer Eileen Thalenberg and biologist Peter Knudtson. The CBC TV's production of "The Nature of Things: AIDS, A Report" was the basis for the present work. In seven chapters the authors cover in detail the history, cause and effects of the dreaded AIDS virus. The language although detailed from a biological and medical standpoint, is written with the average reader in mind. The eleven black-and-white charts and illustrations underscore various points made in the chapter. They are clear and easy to read. Teachers using this book to supplement their courses on AIDS will find these suitable for enlargement. The only mistake this reviewer found among the illustrations appears on p. 21 where the position of the tonsils and the adenoids was reversed! The absence of a table of contents is an unfortunate oversight on the part of the authors; however, the adequate margins and large print make for easy reading.

David Suzuki is a scientist, broadcaster, author and chairman of the David Suzuki Foundation. He is familiar to television audiences as host of the long-running CBC television series, "The Nature of Things," and to radio audiences as the original host of CBC Radio's "Quirks and Quarks." Suzuki also teaches at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and holds 13 honorary degrees from universities around the world. One of the hallmarks of the human species is our intense curiosity. It has driven us to explore the far reaches of the globe, the depths of the oceans and even pushed us into space. It has also rewarded us with tremendous insights into the workings of our own bodies, the structure of matter and the birth of the universe. The composition of our soils is actually crucial to how the ecosystems above ground function. In fact, some of the most important interactions between plants occur underground. Similarly, interactions between organisms in the forest canopy are also crucial because this is where photosynthesis takes place, where sunlight is captured and converted into chemical energy by one of the greatest energy pumps on the planet.

    78. Overpopulation Is Bad But Overconsumption Is Worse - Suzuki
by david suzuki. Geneticist david suzuki is a writer, broadcaster and leading analyst of social and environmental issues. BCEN HOME.
    http://www.bcen.bc.ca/bcerart/Vol2-4/overpopu.htm
OVERPOPULATION IS BAD BUT OVERCONSUMPTION IS WORSE by David Suzuki After a recent lecture, two people objected vehemently to my suggestion that we in industrialized countries are the major cause of global ecological degradation and pollution. They blamed overpopulation in the Third World. I countered by pointing out that the great disparity in wealth and consumption between rich and poor countries has to be addressed. Excess population does lead to ecological destruction and it's made worse in the Third World by their access to little of the planet's resources. But each Canadian consumes 16 to 20 times as much as a person in India or China and 60 to 70 times more than someone in Bangladesh. Thus we 1.1 billion people in industrialized nations have the same ecological impact as 17 billion to 77 billion Third World people. The planet certainly could not take 5.5 billion people living as we do. But if we don't cut back consumption and pollution, poorer nations can rightfully aim to emulate us. My disputants weren't convinced and retorted: "You're crazy if you expect people in Canada or the U.S. to cut back on consumption. It's natural to want more." More than 2,000 years ago, Aristotle had come to the same conclusion: "The avarice of mankind is insatiable." Last century, Leo Tolstoy had backed him up: "Seek among men, from beggar to millionaire, one who is contented with his lot and you will not find one such in a thousand."

David MacRae is a software consultant who works out of his home in St. Laur ent, Quebec. THE CONTRARIAN GLOBAL WARMING AND DAVID SUZUKI'S LIES by David MacRae
When I was growing up in the 60s and 70s, one of the highlights of my TV-viewing week was David Suzuki's excellent The Nature of Things . Each week I looked forward to yet another lucid insight into the workings of technology and the natural world. As a consequence of that long-running series, Suzuki is by far the best-known scientist in Canada. In fact, he has a considerable reputation worldwide. Half-truths man
It's sad to see how a man I once admired has recently stooped to obfuscation, half-truths and outright lies in support of the Luddite cause of stopping technological progress. He imagines that we should return to some mythical past in which Mankind lived in harmony with nature.
Of course, Man has never lived in harmony with nature. Instead he has fought it from the beginning, and rightly so. Until the capitalist revolution of the last 250 years gave us some control over Nature's depredations, the vast majority of people lived lives that were brutish, backbreaking and short. The were those who had a full belly with an occasional helping of meat.
