1988 January
Dr. David Suzuki co-authored this volume with writer Eileen Thalenberg and biologist Peter Knudtson. The CBC TV's production of "The Nature of Things: AIDS, A Report" was the basis for the present work. In seven chapters the authors cover in detail the history, cause and effects of the dreaded AIDS virus. The language although detailed from a biological and medical standpoint, is written with the average reader in mind. The eleven black-and-white charts and illustrations underscore various points made in the chapter. They are clear and easy to read. Teachers using this book to supplement their courses on AIDS will find these suitable for enlargement. The only mistake this reviewer found among the illustrations appears on p. 21 where the position of the tonsils and the adenoids was reversed! The absence of a table of contents is an unfortunate oversight on the part of the authors; however, the adequate margins and large print make for easy reading.

FFWD Weekly
Interview with David Suzuki
By Richard Jagodzinski David Suzuki's phone call came the same morning the Calgary Sun declared "Not Again!" in outrage at the possibility our energy industry would have to look at their markedly increased greenhouse gas emissions. His new book, The Sacred Balance (Greystone Books), could be called the Suzuki manifesto. A complete synthesis of his eco-philosophy, the book outlines what Suzuki believes we truly need and need to do to survive. He outlines our three major categories of needs - physical, psychological and (this comes as a surprise from anyone in the highly concrete sequential scientific community) spiritual. Our conversation started out on a fairly tame note, but incendiaries flew when news hit his ear of Ty Lund's comment that Alberta will accept no binding restrictions on its emissions, made in response to Clinton's latest clean air initiative. "Canada's action on global warming is absolutely reprehensible. You know, Ty Lund - Shmy Lund, these guys have got their heads up their ass - if you can possibly quote me on that. The reason is this: Who the hell are Ty Lund or Ralph Klein? They don't know a thing about science. "September 30th, Al Gore received a statement that was signed by over half of all Nobel prize winners. It was signed by 1,600 senior scientists from around the world. The title of this document was World Scientists Call for Action at Kyoto. The bottom line was you only have one choice - act now. What they said was as scientists they know global warming is occurring, that human activity is a major contributor to the warming process and that if left unchecked, the consequences are going to be absolutely catastrophic. Now how dare Ty Lund, how dare the Alberta Government, how dare the oil industry say that the economic cost of doing something about greenhouse gas emission will be too great? We're talking about a future for our children and the leading scientists are telling us that.

50. Great Inspirations - David Suzuki

http://www.abc.net.au/science/slab/inspire/suzuki.htm
David Suzuki tends towards emphasising the destructive consequences of scientific discovery and the shortcomings of modern science. On the other hand, he is a world-esteemed geneticist with a string of degrees. I like the fact that he has managed to take a look over his shoulder at science, while still keeping his foot in the arena - a kind of self-regulation. I also like the way he emphasises that science can be much more than it is now, rather than simply ruling it as inadequate and missing the point. David pointed out that scientific analysis tends to look at the world in fragmented pieces… take one aspect of nature, isolate it from everything else, control everything impinging on it and measure everything that happens. From here, add all the isolated snapshots of nature together and what do you get? A fractured mosaic rather than the big picture. He wrote about the mosaic view of science in his book Inventing the Future (1990) which was full of ideas which reflected my own fledgling thoughts. I admired the way he questioned the infinity of scientific knowledge and recognised that science has a responsibility as well as an important role in the world - that scientific discoveries can have profound social consequences!

Part 2: Schools, Science and Self-Reliance
by Ruth Bradley-St-Cyr
Ruth Bradley-St-Cyr: Do schools have a role to play, in science class for example, in getting kids thinking about the environment? David Suzuki: It's very difficult to bring about really deep curricular changes. What you depend on are the few teachers who are pushing the environmental message. I think what we need is really a profound curricular change and that's going to take a lot of time. I sat for three years on the Science Council of Canada committee that looked at science education in elementary and secondary schools. What we said was that we should be aiming for one hour of science per day, every day of a school child's life, from kindergarten on. That was the goal. Well we are so far away from that it's not even funny. We outlined a whole series of changes that could be done at very little extra expense to reach that goal. The major problem is that most of the teachers in primary school are women who've had virtually no science at all in their university career and are afraid of science. So if you say science they get really freaked out and uptight about it because they have barriers. They associate science with math and all kinds of things. I won't say they're hostile but they're nervous about it. Also the curricular people think that science is this very math driven, high tech, do-experiments-and-write-it-up-a-certain-way kind of thing. To me that's not what science is.

Transcript: Bill Moyers Interviews David Suzuki More on This Story: Select One Human Impact on Earth State of the Earth
MOYERS: We get so many reports of what we're doing to our air, our soil and our water. But I ask you as a scientist, is the diagnosis lethal? SUZUKI: I don't think anyone can say at what point it will be lethal to us as a species. I like to say that in Canada not long ago, Cape Breton coalminers took canaries in the coal mine. When the canary keeled over, they didn't say, "Hey, Jack, come on over here. This bird just fell over. What do you think? Do you think it's…" They hauled their backsides outta there as fast as they could go. Birds are, especially canaries are super sensitive to hydrogen sulfide, and sour gas. So, they give you an early warning. Well, canaries have been falling all around the planet for decades now. Plants and animals that no longer are able to survive in the plan… in the conditions that we've created. And what have we done? We've ignored this. We've always said, "Oh, well, there's plenty more where that came from." There aren't plenty more where that came from. And now our own children have become the canaries. One out of five children in Canada will now have asthma. When you and I were boys, asthma was a rare disease.

Experimenting with Life by David Suzuki
I am a geneticist by training. At one time, I had one of the largest research grants and genetics labs in Canada. The time I spent in this lab was one of the happiest periods of my life and I am proud of the contribution we made to science. My introductory book is still the most widely used genetics text in the world. When I graduated as a geneticist in 1961, I was full of enthusiasm and determined to make a mark. Back then we knew about DNA, genes, chromosomes, and genetic regulation. But today when I tell students what our hot ideas were in ‘61, they choke with laughter. Viewed in 2000, ideas from 1961 seem hilarious. But when those students become professors years from now and tell their students what was hot in 2000, their students will be just as amused. At the cutting edge of scientific research, most of our ideas are far from the mark – wrong, in need of revision, or irrelevant. That’s not a derogation of science; it’s the way science advances. We take a set of observations or data, set up a hypothesis that makes sense of them, and then we test the hypothesis. The new insights and techniques we gain from this process are interpreted tentatively and liable to change, so any rush to apply them strikes me as downright dangerous.

David Suzuki slams Australia over attitude to global warming
MELBOURNE, Australia (AFP) Mar 03, 2004
World renowned ecologist David Suzuki lashed out here Wednesday at Australia's failure to reduce global warming, or to ratify the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas. The Canadian environmentalist, who is here for the launch of Toyota's 2004 environment and community report at the car manufacturer's new "green" corporate headquarters, said Australia is especially vulnerable to global warming and should do more to counter it. "Here you have a country (where) your federal government is saying 'we in Australia, we can't do anything about global warming... we can't do anything'," he said. "Australia is especially vulnerable. Your whole country is bordered by the ocean, sea levels are rising, half your country is desert, that desertification is going to continue. "You've got all this sunshine coming down and look, anywhere you look, where is there a solar panel anywhere? "And your government has the nerve to say we can't do anything about Kyoto." The Kyoto Protocol requires industrialised signatory countries to cut emissions of greenhouse gases, the carbon-based pollution which results from burning fossil fuels and is blamed for driving global warming.
