Broadcaster, author, scientist and environmental activist Dr. David Suzuki talks about his latest project, narrating a children's album entitled Amazing Journey: Children Sing to the Beat of the Earth.
by Ruth Bradley-St-Cyr Ruth Bradley-St-Cyr: Could you tell me a bit of the background behind your new project, Amazing Journey ? I was interested in the fact that you were using music to reach kids with science. David Suzuki: I've always tried to be open to any kind of idea that could get through to people. So I've done tapes in the past, I've done videos obviously, I've done different kinds of records, radio, television. I mean, I've just tried any medium that I could get. Ruth: Yes, I noticed a little dig at politicians there, in the one about the whales. David: The tape we did before this one, in fact, was called Connections . We've done three together now; Amazing Journey is the third. The first was called

David Suzuki on Biotechnology Revolution

Summary:
Geneticist and author David Suzuki urges caution in the rush to commercialise transgenic products.
Details or Transcript:
Alexandra de Blas: Well-known author and environmentalist, David Suzuki, is currently touring Australia to promote his latest book, 'The Naked Ape to Superspecies'.
David Suzuki began his scientific career as a geneticist which makes him particularly interested in the gene revolution now sweeping the world. And his come country, Canada, is one of the nations leading the charge in agricultural biotechnology.
So I asked him how he sees the incredible advances now taking place in this field of research.
David Suzuki: I think that the biotechnology illustrates the incredible ability of scientists to become intoxicated with what they're doing, and to get so carried away that we forget to look at bigger issues. It's true that what's going on in biotechnology today is revolutionary. I'm excited by it. My daughter's a second-year student at university, and when I see what they're doing in undergraduate labs, they're things I never dreamt I would see in my lifetime. So I understand why people are exuberant and enthusiastic.
Each discovery should make us feel much more humble about how incredibly complex the world is, and how little we know. With biotechnology we have the ability to essentially create organisms that have never existed before. In nature, flounders, fish, didn't normally exchange DNA with a corn plant or a tomato plant. We're now taking genes from fish and putting them into plants. When you do that, you change the context of that fish gene, it discovers itself in a totally different surrounding, we don't know enough to predict how that organism is going to behave.

Declaration of Interdependence - David Suzuki
Summary: David Suzuki's Declaration of Interdependence gives voice to the crucial facts on which the environment movement is based. Date: 23 January 1998 This We Know We are the earth, through the plants and animals that nourish us. We are the rains and the oceans that flow through our veins. We are the breath of the forests of the land and the plants of the sea. We are human animals, related to all other life as descendants of the firstborn cell. We share a common present, filled with uncertainty. And we share a common future as yet untold. We humans are but one of 30 million species weaving the thin layer of life enveloping the world. The stability of communities of living things depends on this diversity. Linked in that web, we are interconnected - using, cleansing. sharing and replenishing the fundamental elements of life. Our home, planet Earth, is finite; all life shares its resources and the energy from the sun and therefore has limits to growth. For the first time, we have touched those limits.

SUZUKI, DAVID Canadian Scientist/Television Personality A house-hold name in English-Canada, David Suzuki has almost single-handily popularized some of the most complex scientific issues of our times, largely through the medium of television. While students, teachers and heads of state continually laud his attempts to demystify contemporary science and nature, some in Canada's science community argue that Suzuki's work on environmental issues, in particular, is politically biased. Politics aside, Suzuki's awards of recognition clearly speak for themselves: Canada's most prestigious award, the Order of Canada; UNESCO's Kalinga Prize and the United Nations Environmental Program Medal. Such recognition, particularly those bestowed to him in his native Canada, are in hindsight quite ironic. Growing up as a third generation Japanese-Canadian, Suzuki, his sisters and mother were placed in internment camps in 1942 by the Canadian government. After the war Suzuki and his family were forbidden by law to return to their Vancouver home. On the faculty at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Suzuki as a young academic began his illustrious television career teaching science on campus TV. Some ten years later this experience, coupled with his scientific expertise, eventually landed Suzuki a host position on the weekly television program

    31. David Suzuki Foundation: Climate Change : Landfills
Shows the impacts of landfills on ecosystems.
    http://www.davidsuzuki.org/Climate_Change/Solutions/Landfills.asp
Canadian landfills produce the greenhouse equivalent of 5 million cars. Methane emissions from landfills account for 2.9 per cent of Canada’s total greenhouse gas emissions. In the year 2010, that figure is expected to be 19 per cent higher. Methane comes from decomposing organic materials, including food, yard waste, diapers, paper and cardboard. Up to 70 per cent of urban landfill waste generates methane gas. Capturing and burning landfill methane would reduce total emissions. Although burning methane produces carbon dioxide, methane is 21 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide (over its 100 year lifespan). Canada can reduce these methane emissions by requiring that landfills of one million tons or more capture and burn methane. This methane could be used as a source of “green” power to replace non-renewable, fossil fuel power sources. Energy produced from landfills earns money; the City of Toronto receives $2.5 million per year from its landfill gas electricity projects. Composting reduces landfill methane.

    Air-Juvenile fiction. Grades 1 - 4 / Ages 6 - 9.
    Review by Dennis Wood.
This book is a disappointment. Suzuki is a national treasure, whose popularization of science has deepened and broadened the understanding of many Canadians. If We Could See the Air misses the mark because it promises a story and delivers a lecture. Readers of The Magic School Bus expect a lecture, and facts at every turn, but readers of this book are led to expect a story which the book doesn't deliver.
Wherever the dialogue devolves into a science lecture, which is frequently, the narrative suffers. Still, Fernandes's delightful illustrations go a long way toward redeeming the book, doing all they can to support the concepts.
Nonfiction for primary grades is a tough balancing act. Readers must be enticed and informed. This book does both, but fails the most important test: "Read it again!" will not be any child's refrain. If We Could See the Air is inexpensive, and school libraries may want it to fill a gap at
