His 1985 series, A Planet for the Taking averaged 1.8 million viewers per episode and earned him a United Nations Environment Program Medal (1988). After geneticist and broadcaster David Suzuki became a noted world authority on the fruit fly, he devoted himself full-time to environmental concerns and, in doing so, popularized science for millions. His latest volume, The Sacred Balance (1997), reinforces this theme. [Photo, courtesy Canadian Broadcasting Corporation] International Wildlife cum laude His discoveries drew the attention of scientists around the world, and, in 1968, Suzuki served as Canadian delegate to the International Congress of Genetics in Tokyo. By the early 1970s, a 20-plus staff was working in his lab where he often slept at nights on a hammock. Such dedication to research cost Suzuki his first marriage in 1965. Moreover, his increasing concerns about the potential negative impacts on society of science and technology prompted Suzuki, in the mid-70s, to abandon much of his scientific research. From 1974-79, Suzuki hosted the CBC radio show

As a child growing up in British Columbia, David Suzuki was told by his father, "You have to be ten times better than other Canadians in everything you do, because if you are only as good as they are you'll lose out every time." Suzuki learned that lesson and has spent most of his life being better at science, broadcasting, writing and teaching than most other Canadians. This biography follows Suzuki from his happy early childhood through the bitter years of internment during World War II and on to his successful academic career, his brief years of working in the United States, and his return to Canada and even greater success as a geneticist and an interpreter of science for the general public. This well-balanced biography does not slight Suzuki's personal life - his high school experiences and his two marriages and five children are mentioned - but it focuses on the development of his environmental concerns and his attempts to change Canadians' attitudes toward science. By the use of well-chosen quotations, the author lets Suzuki speak to readers in his own words. The book ends with a quotation that sums up many of his hopes: "Efforts to teach children to love and respect nature are priceless ... I hope this new generation will look after our planet better than we have."

A TRIBUTE FROM SUZUKI DAVID JEFFERIES 1972 - 2003 31/5 - DAVID JEFFERIES, 30, the fastest ever rider on the TT Mountain Course, died on Thursday when he crashed his 1000cc TAS Suzuki during practice for this year’s races in the Isle of Man. The much liked David Jefferies on his last lap of the course on Thursday, David died holding the lap record and the fastest practise time for the 1000 Production class The burly Yorkshireman was on his second lap of the dry roads, afternoon session when his machine left the road at the flat out in top gear, 160mph left hand kink between Glen Vine and Crosby. On the opening lap he recorded a speed of 125.20mph. The afternoon practice session was stopped and then abandoned with an extra session for solo riders being scheduled for Friday morning.
In an official statement, the race organising ACU, said that an enquiry into the details of the incident would be instituted immediately.
Following the cancellation of the TT because of foot and mouth disease in 2001, Jefferies joined Suzuki for last year’s event and added yet another victory treble in the F1, Senior and Production races.
Also last year, Jefferies won the Superbike race at the North West 200 and the production 1000cc race at the Ulster GP on TAS GSX-R Suzuki machines.

    http://www.tv.cbc.ca/lifeandtimes/bio1997/suzuki.htm
David Suzuki DAVID SUZUKI If there's one person whose name is synonymous with the environmental movement in Canada , its David Suzuki. As host of CBC television’s The Nature of Things , he’s brought the world of science, and his environmental crusade, into the nations living rooms. He is also an acclaimed geneticist, prolific author and impassioned orator. Suzuki’s carefree childhood in British Columbia came to an abrupt end in 1942, when his family was herded into an internment camp . In the mass hysteria following the bombing of Pearl Harbour, people of Japanese descent were held as enemies of Canada. Their property and belongings confiscated, his family moved to Ontario to rebuild their lives. In high school, Suzuki excelled academically, but always felt like an outsider. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in the United States, then returned to British Columbia, gaining a reputation as a brilliant genetic researcher. In 1979, he was hired as host of The Nature of Things and began speaking out about the wanton destruction of Canada’s natural resources. His outspoken views have earned him accolades and enemies - he’s been the target of hate mail, vandalism and personal attack. In this candid biography, David Suzuki reflects on his role as husband and father, and talks about the lasting wounds of his war-time experience. He still feels the bitter pain of being called an alien in his own country. Despite his fame and success, he feels he must continue to prove his worth to other Canadians. Interviews with his sisters, his second wife, Tara, and their two daughters provide a rare glimpse of a complex, driven man.

Suzuki questions the way we treat our Earth
By DEBORAH GARDNER Hamilton Spectator You're driving to the storewhen you notice a small woodedarea on the side of the road. One month later, the forest hasbeen clear-cut. Six months later, the first stage of an apartment building is rising from the ground. One year later, you forget the forest even existed.
"We want Earth to speed up, our forests don't grow fast enough for us," said Canadian icon David Suzuki at bookstore Chapters in Ancaster yesterday while promoting his new book, Earth Time:Essays. "Human time is out of sync with Earth time."
Earth Time, published by Stoddart ($22.95), is a selection of environmental essays from the last years of the syndicated column he wrote for 12 years.

David Suzuki on the Impact of Humanity More on This Story: Select One Interview Transcript State of the Earth Overview In his interview with Bill Moyers, David Suzuki discusses the question of what humans are doing to our air, our soil, and our water. He points out that the consequences of our actions are not yet clear, but that undoubtedly, future generations will see the effects of environmental stress. In his most recent television series, THE SACRED BALANCE , Suzuki discusses how human beings are intimately connected to all life processes on Earth. One of the problems many scientists attribute to human activity is global warming. A study by the JOURNAL IN GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH published in January 2002 showed that human activity has affected the Earth's surface temperature during the last 130 years, and that the shift is not over. While Earth's global temperature during the last ice age, more than 15,000 years ago, was only 3 to 5 degrees Celsius (5 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit) cooler than it is now, northern hemispheric temperature may increase by up to 3.5 degrees Celsius (6.3 degrees Fahrenheit) during the next century alone. On the Environmental News Network , a section on Global Warming and Climate Change expresses the fears of some scientists, warning: Other affects of human behavior on the Earth are so profound that they are visible from space. Photographer Emmet Gowin has been taking the measure of the human footprint on the earth. His stunning aerial photographs appear in a NOW photo essay
