Cows

by Pierina Curties (c) 2002 Cows is an e-novel available for free download on the AltX web-site (more about that later). One of the things that excited me about this was that I could also downlaod it for my new palm pilot - which meant that I could read it on the go rather than sitting in front of my computer (don't we all sit in front of the computer way too much?). Instead, carry a smaller computer with you and sit in the sunshine trying to read your PP screen to the even greater detriment of your eyes. (I digress!) I loved Cows and found I got really addicted to it - so much so that I found it hard to read it fast enough on the small screen. So then I went to my desktop and tried reading it there. I found that that caused eye muscle fatigue. In the end, I actually printed parts of it off so that I could read it lying down. So much for my adaptive abilities to the world of new media. Anyway, apart from the physical difficulties of my first attempt at reading an e-novel, I found the story engrossing. Pink Panther movies, Flying High (Airplane) and the X-files all came to mind as I read

by Anthony Adinolfi (May 7,1999)
If we were to ask any Internet marketing expert about what is important in creating effective corporate websites, they will most likely tell us that interactivity is the key to success. However, if we press them to explain what exactly interactivity is , the answers will be much less certain (if they can even provide an answer at all). In our modern day, "interactivity" has become little more than an overused buzzword made to impress people and convince them that something is desirable (after all, if such a flashy term is used to describe it, it must We are attacked by more and increasingly ambiguous buzzwords everyday. There are prefix buzzwords such as "virtual," "cyber," and "techno" which can be included at the beginning of any other word to make it sound more important and on the cutting-edge. There are also content and marketing buzzwords like "multimedia," "web-enabled," "on-line," and "user-friendly" as well as business buzzwords like "e-business," "media-centric," "best-of-breed," and the dreaded "Y2K bug". Finally there's the most overt and demeaning bit of buzz-babble ever... "buzzword-compliant," a term which implies that something which fits the criteria of all the current hype of the day somehow translates as being that which is desirable.

Out is In, Off the Page/ Now Online - Coo por Martina E. Linnemann One can envision novels printed on scrolls, on globes, on moebius strips, on billboards, or not printed at all but produced on electronic or video tape, or acted out on stage. Ronald Sukenick, "The New Tradition in Fiction"
Over twenty years ago, Ronald Sukenick pointed to the possibility of novels moving outside of their traditional print format as his novel, Out, has recently done, going on-line at altx . But back then, Sukenick regarded it as a move in the wrong direction. "To complain that a novel can't escape its binding," he argued, "is like complaining that the mind can't escape from its skull." What was needed, he proposed, was a rethinking of the novel form within its print medium, a reconsideration of the concrete, technological reality of the book and the use of its three-dimensional and visual nature to work together with the narrative embedded in it.
First published in 1973, Out exemplified Sukenick's theory in its use of typography to support textual meaning, but also to create visual meaning independent of the text. Specifically, the novel is divided into ten chapters, numbered in reverse order. Each chapter is itself made up of paragraphs containing the same number of lines as the chapter number. Thus the paragraphs shrink by one line with each new chapter. Chapter 1, the last chapter, contains nothing but paragraphs of a single line that drive toward the end, a "0," which is followed by pages of white space as if the text has moved completely out of the book.

Finnegans Wake . But despite these difficulties, is actually a very exciting book. Its three parts form a unit that is coherent beyond the stubborn refusal of the writer to make the book easy.
Finnegans Wake . It concludes on a mixed note of the sublime and the personal, an experience both moving and chilling.
Not an easy book, and not one that every reader will respond to; but for the fearless and careful reader, is unforgettable.
Matthew Roberson has attempted the Borgesian feat of rewriting Sukenick: great chunks of

Dissolution arises less from external factors than from the tensions associated with the beginning of the new school term. In fact, if we did not have the example of the earlier book before us, we might not perceive that the group is, in fact, disintegrating. , grinds to a halt.

Ronald Sukenick:
Down and In: Life in the Underground, New York 1987, p. 30-31

After a while, I also became familiar with the strange figure of Moondog in medieval-looking leather, blanket, and Viking horns, usually stationed in the middle of the sidewalk on Broadway or Sixth Avenue, selling sheet music. Moondog, crackpot composer and inventor of bizarre instruments such as the "oo" and the "trimbas," like the clownish Puerto Rican street poet Jorge Brandon, whom I later encounter with his talking coconut in the East Village, turns out to be a fairly interesting artist, or so say those who attend his occasional rooftop concerts. Philip Glass once let Moondog live at his place when he had nowhere to go. It's not the oddball quality of these figures that attracts me, but rather the way they throw themselves on the mercy of others, their willed destruction of pride, self-respect, and even ego itself. If you are seeking distinctions from the aggressive egoism of the fifties success cult, Gould and Bodenheim are especially instructive examples.
