Up When Ronald Sukenick's first novel, UP , came out in 1968, post-modernism, avant-pop and autofiction hadn't been invented yet. UP invented them. Ronald Sukenick's ten subsequent books are typically twenty or thirty years ahead of their time, and UP is more timely than ever. Ronald Sukenick is himself the main character of his book, in which he glides undisturbed from present to future, from reality to fantasy. Some of the time he's an adolescent Brooklynite, at other times a part-time English teacher, a struggling writer living in a Lower East Side tenement, or a fantasist deftly moving in and out of numerous alter egos. His comings and goings produce a stunning tour de force of a novel - mutinous, violent, sexy, sad, and above all, funny. "Beg it, buy it, borrow it or steal it. UP is the most serious and valid anatomy of our culture's ills this reviewer has encountered in the past year's reading." Minneapolis Tribune

RONALD SUKENICK - "MOSAIC MAN" This somewhat thinly-disguised piece of fiction looks at the Jewish novel through the lens of contemporary Pop culture and cyberpunk. It's a combination of history, memoir, daydream and acid trip. Part of this book takes place in World War II era Brooklyn, where Ron dreams of bombing runs over Nazi-occupied Europe with Baseball Commissioner Kennesaw Landis. As a tourist in Jerusalem, he walks through a huge water pipe, still in use, built during the time of the Assyrians, over 2000 years ago. Included is a take-off on the movie The Maltese Falcon. Also here are stories of traveling through Europe, of getting drunk in 1950s Paris, and hanging out with Solidarity protesters in Poland. Using the structure of the Old Testament, Sukenick also gives his take on the Golem story, the patterns of history, the differences among Jews, and the return of the Golden Calf worshipped by the people of ancient Israel. If one section of this book doesn't interest the reader, sit tight; Sukenick will suddenly take this book in a totally different direction. I really enjoyed this story. It keeps the reader engaged, it's very easy to read, and for those who like modern avant-garde fiction, it's especially recommended.

    http://rantsravesreviews.homestead.com/MosaicMan.html
Mosaic Man is part Tropic of Cancer , part Steppenwolf , part Breakfast of Champions as Sukenick uses Jewish folklore and history to weave his very avant-garde stories of a modern Jewish man in search of his roots.
The book begins with a stream-of-self-consciousness diatribe against Nazism and anti-Semitism, which is predictable, and can be a bit overwrought in places. The second chapter/story is a very Vonnegut-style mix of symbols accompanied by the fragmented transcription of a lengthy recorded interview with Sukenick's grandparents. In this chapter, we get a glimpse into Sukenick's roots that leaves the reader with the same sense of incompleteness that leads the author into his quest to fill in the missing words.
