2001 Vol. 2 No. 4 p.476-480 NEW POSSIBILITIES BROUGHT ABOUT BY HYPERTEXT YIN Qi-ping College of Foreign Languages, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310028, China
Abstract This paper explores the new possibilities of the novel in the context of technologies of computer hypertext. One of the central argmnents of the paper is that the operational logic of the novel can be made to approximate that of a web of hypertext links. The author also argues that the hope of the renaissance of the novel Iies in the technologically enhanced speed of the traffic in models between smooth space and striated space.
Keywords hypertext, renaissance of the novel, smooth space, striated space, approximation CLC Number: ¡¡Document Code: A

While expanding his dissertation into Wallace Stevens: Musing the Obscure (New York University Press, 1967), Sukenick also published short stories and wrote his first novel, Up (The Dial Press), whose publication in 1968 caused a sensation. Death of the Novel and Other Stories (The Dial Press) followed in 1969 and his second novel Out (The Swallow Press) in 1973. In 1974 he joined several other writers dissatisfied with the returning conservatism of the publishing industry to found The Fiction Collective. The Collective published Sukenick's next three books Long-Talking Bad Conditions Blues (1979), and The Endless Short Story (1986) as well as the more recent Doggy Bag Blown Away , in 1986. The year before Southern Illinois University Press had brought out In Form: Digressions on the Act of Fiction (1985), a book of essays about "the ongoing struggle with the angel of form."
American Book Review . In 1988 he also acquired and redesigned Black Ice , a magazine of innovative fiction.

Narralogues
, published this year by the State University of New York (SUNY) Press, is a slim 133-page volume, but it has the wide-ranging scope of a major work. For anyone whose eyes glaze over when confronted with innovative writing, Sukenick’s book is surprisingly accessible and enormously fun to read. "I’ve got the hots for you," he informs us in the introduction. After all, storytelling is "an erotic adventure." True to his word, Narralogues is a palpably seductive blend of autobiography, fiction, satire and politics.
Sukenick’s view is that literary fiction has been thoroughly usurped by the entertainment industry. We’re drowning in novels and stories designed to narcotize us with "mind-numbing make-believe" and "intellectual passivity." Too often, the most interesting writers are marginalized and ignored. Valiant small presses are fighting "an uneven battle" against "publishing conglomerates and the electronic media." Sukenick wants his work to stand as a rebuke to the avalanche of mainstream literature that "robotically reflects the status quo with no illuminating angle of its own." If this sounds as if he’s written little more than a harangue aimed at our media-saturated age, that would be a misconception. "Literature," he says, "should not try to mirror our experience, it should intervene in it." Sukenick’s goal in

Hungry Mind Review
Thinky and Kinky
Summer 1999
Review by Michael Tortorello
Resolved: Narcissism is the mother of invention. To evaluate that claim, let us first define our terms. Narcissism, the good people at Random House report, is an "inordinate fascination with oneself." The word also can refer to "an erotic gratification derived from admiration of one's own physical or mental attributes." Now let's turn our attention to Mosaic Man, the latest "avant-pop" novel from Ronald Sukenick, which addresses the writer is "his own master, the masturbator of his fate." If he is, then invention- that is, fiction-would be the seed spilled by his self-serving urge. Sukenick, a liberated thinker, refutes the notion of mastery: "His destiny is not his own. He's not himself today, nor any day. Why? Because he's a Jew, in a word. And a word can change everything, whether you want it to or not. Not up to you. Or me. I'm not in control. No. I am who I am. Like Pop Eye the Sailorman." Thus spake the Sailorman. But it is anyone prepared to dispute that this spurt of logorrhea comes from a chronic literary onanist? In a moment of greater lucidity, Sukenick says that he has "at times been fascinated with writing and rewriting my autobiography, there's so much of it I don't know anything about."

Rereading
Ronald Sukenick
When I started rereading OUT seriously in the course of putting it online, I felt a growing conviction that the book had been written by a shockingly demented lunatic. Then I remembered that I wrote it. And that the lives of many of us had a maniac quality at the time. And that the era it epitomizedit was published in 1973was a shockingly lunatic period. The book in its manic way catches the tone of the time as I remember it. The movie made from the book several years later (starring Peter Coyote and Danny Glover, still available in many video stores) though excellent in its way, is sane by comparison. OUT, it seems to me, is tuned in to some other realityspeedy, hysterical, wise, obscene, comic, crazy and shamanic, a trip in more ways than onebut a reality that's still as real as sex, dreams, desire, spiritual anguish and a yearning for salvation and cosmic justice.
And besides, a life without a little madness in it is hardly worth living.
this way... Ronald Sukenick: Bio
One of the leading postmodern innovators, Ronald Sukenick has been on the cutting edge of American writing for twenty-five years and his influence has been pervasive. His breakthrough books

20. Interview With Ron Sukenick
THE SARAH LAWRENCE ORGIES of 1968 AN INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR ronald sukenick. The teacher/student relationship has been a strong bond throughout history.
http://www.altx.com/int2/suk.html
THE SARAH LAWRENCE ORGIES of 1968: AN INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR RONALD SUKENICK The teacher/student relationship has been a strong bond throughout history. So strong that many administrations have enforced rules about their private conduct. Not so in the late 1960s, where the deans encouraged their teachers to hit on the young impressionable students looking for modes of rebellion, and at Sarah Lawrence, when it was still an all-women school, that was the place to be for an avant-garde novelist and budding professor like Ronald Sukenick. Ronald Sukenick is the author of numerous works of innovative fiction including Up, Out, 98.6, The Endless Short Story, Blown Away, and Long Talking Bad Condition Blues. His book of non-fiction, Down and In, recreated the New York underground scene from the fifties to the present. His most recent book of fiction, Doggy Bag (Black Ice Books), has been given an enormous welcome through many reviews in newspapers and large audiences on two recent reading tours of the United States. In a recent panel discussion on Fiction into the 21st Century , Marjorie Perloff mentioned Sukenick as one of the most interesting writers now working.
