Suetonius and the reign of Tiberius: a comparison with other sources
Suetonius wrote a vivid account of Tiberius’ life in his Twelve Caesars. Tiberius’ personality, especially his duplicity, cruelty and dissimulation appear clearly in this writer’s biography of the second emperor. I would like to recount and analyze certain episodes in Suetonius’ biography of Tiberius and in the other authors’ accounts, particularly Tacitus’ and Dio Cassius’. I will then compare these and try to tie them in to the authors’ outlooks as historians and possible class relationships as a mode of explanation for the angle of each story.
First, I would like to talk briefly about each of the concerned writers and their sources, to give us a basis for what will follow. Four authors have chronicled Tiberius’ reign in some detail, one of them, Velleius Paterculus, while Tiberius was alive and ruling the Empire, the other three, Suetonius, Tacitus and Dio Cassius, later on in the history of Rome.
Velleius Paterculus was a military tribune under Augustus, a prefect of the horse, a legate, a quaestor and finally a praetor under Tiberius.[1] He is known as an admirer of Tiberius, whom he served under, and of Sejanus, and this can be seen in the text. Whether this positive outlook was due to genuine admiration, prudence or fear is another story. He died around 30 or 31, so we do not have his angle on the fall of Sejanus.[2]

Virgil by Suetonius The following extract was taken from 'Rome The Augustan Age' by Chisolm and Ferguson, Oxford University Press 1981. A number of Lives of Virgil were written in Antiquity, of which the best known, most extensive and most reliable is that found in the introduction to a commentry on Virgil's Bucolics (Eclogues) and Georgics by the 4th century AD grammarian Aelius Donatus. It is very probably taken from a work by Suetonius, On Famous Men, which dealt with a number of poets, including Horace. As the secretary (ab epistulus) to the Emperor Hadrian (AD 117-38), Suetonius would have had access to Augustus's private correspondence and other evidence. Portrait of Vergil, 6th Eclogue

  • Publius Vergilius Maro, a native of Mantua, had parents of humble origin, especially his father, who according to some was a potter, although the general opinion is that he was at first the hired man of a certain Magus, an attendant on the magistrates, later became his son in law because of his dilligence, and greatly increased his little property by buying up woodlands and raising bees. He was born in the first consulship of Gnaeus Pompeius the Great and Marcus Licinius Crasus, on the ides of October, in a district called Andes, not far distant from Mantua.

    The Roman historian Suetonius
Suetonius was a Roman historian and an official under the emperor Hadrian . In his 'Life of Claudius ', he says (25:4): As the Jews were making constant disturbances at the instigation of Chrestus [= Christ?], he [Claudius] expelled them from Rome. This expulsion took place in AD 49, and is identified with the event described by Luke in Acts chapter 18 verse 2 Then, in his ' Lives of the Caesars ', Suetonius says (26:2) of the fire of Rome in AD 64, that: Punishment by Nero was inflicted on the Christians, a class of men given to a new and mischievous superstition.

CAMUS, SUETONIUS AND THE CALIGULA MYTH
THE PHENOMENON of the revival of classical Greek themes in the French theatre in the mid-twentieth century has by now been well discussed and documented. Classical tombs may well have been robbed in France between 1920 and 1950, and the genre has undoubtedly been Yet of the enormous range of themes and characters which were fully exploited in the Renaissance, the number transposed to the modern period is small. Oedipus and Jocasta, Antigone and Creon, Orestes and Electra, these are the characters and relationships which dominate the age, reflecting, perhaps, some of the most significant aspects of the French malaise at this time: increasing sensitivity to the arrogance of political power, a growing consciousness in intellectuals of metaphysical alienation, and a general re-examination of personal (particularly sexual?) values.
