Suetonius nám zanechal i jiná díla.

In the next consulate, having previously been nominated priest of Jupiter [by Marius and Cinna, Cos. 86], he broke his engagement with Cossutia, a lady of only equestrian rank, but very wealthy, who had been betrothed to him before he assumed the gown of manhood, and married Cornelia, daughter of that Cinna who was four times consul, by whom he afterwards had a daughter Julia; and the dictator Sulla could by no means force him to put away his wife. Being sent by Thermus to Bithynia, to fetch a fleet, he dawdled so long at the court of Nicomedes that he was suspected of improper relations with the king; and he lent color to this scandal by going back to Bithynia a few days after his return, with the alleged purpose of collecting a debt for a freedman, one of his dependents. During the rest of the campaign he enjoyed a better reputation, and at the storming of Mytilene [80 BC] Thermus awarded him the civic crown [a chaplet of oak leaves, given for saving the life of a fellow-citizen, the highest military award of the Roman state].

Contents Index Suetonius on the Christians "Because the Jews at Rome caused constant disturbances at the instigation of Chrestus [Christ], he [Claudius] expelled them from the city [Rome]." Suetonius' Life of the Emperor Claudius, chapter 25 (excerpt)
" During his reign many abuses were severely punished and put down, and no fewer new laws were made: a limit was set to expenditures; the public banquets were confined to a distribution of food, the sale of any kind of cooked viands in the taverns was forbidden, with the exception of pulse and vegetables, whereas before every sort of dainty was exposed for sale. Punishment was inflicted on the Christians, a class of men given to a new and mischievous superstition. He put an end to the diversions of the chariot drivers, who from immunity of long standing claimed the right of ranging at large and amusing themselves by cheating and robbing the people. The pantomimic actors and their partisans were banished from the city." - Suetonius' Life of the Emperor Nero, chapter 16 (excerpt)

Suetonius
Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus ), commonly known simply as Suetonius , was a Roman writer Suetonius was an administrator working as a secretary to the emperor Hadrian . He is remembered chiefly as the author of "The Lives of the First Twelve Caesars", history of Roman leaders, which has been the source for many works on Roman history and is generally regarded as about as impartial as a historian of ancient times could be. It must, however, be remembered, that many of the biographies in it are of rulers who died before its author was born. Suetonius made one reference to "Chrestus," which may refer to "Christ." Suetonius Paullinus
Gaius Suetonius Paullinus (flourished 1st century CE) was a Roman general. He went to Mauretania with the rank of praetor in AD 42 to suppress a revolt and soon earned promotion to legatus legionis . He was the first Roman to cross the Atlas Mountains . In 59 he received command of the army in Roman Britain and became Governor General of the territories there. Paullinus acted vigorously in suppressing revolt, especially in Wales , but he was campaigning against the druids of Mona when Boudicca razed Camulodunum circa 60) and he had to race southwards. He could not reach Verulamium or Londinium , and both settlements suffered heavy damage. Paullinus advanced down Watling Street to choose a battlefield to his advantage. The two armies met at an unknown location, believed to lie in the Midlands near Manduessedum near the modern day town of Atherstone in Warwickshire . The discipline of the 14th legion sufficed to rout the numerically superior Britons. According to Tacitus 20,000 Roman troops faced around 100,000 Britons. The army of Boudicca advanced straight at the waiting Romans, but when the forces met the superior weapons and discipline of the legionaries forced them back. Tacitus states that the Britons' own baggage train then prevented their flight, and defeat turned into slaughter. Possibly 80,000 Britons died, while Roman casualties remained under 1,000. (The British casualties included women and children, for families accompanied the combatants.)

Life
Caius Suetonius Tranquillus was born in the province of Africa, in Hippo Regius, near modern 'Annaba in northeast Algeria. His father Suetonius Laetus was a rich man and belonged to the equestrian order, the second rank of the Roman elite (after the senators). In 69, the year of the civil war that is known as the 'year of the four emperors', Laetus was serving as a military tribune in the thirteenth legion Gemina . The author of the Lives of the Twelve Caesars tells this in his Life of Otho , and adds that his father had been present when Otho decided to commit suicide after his army had been defeated at Cremona by the legions of his rival Vitellius Examples

From this simple piece of information, we can deduce a couple of things. In the first place, that Laetus was probably born in 49 or 50, because a military tribune was usually nineteen or twenty years old. Under normal circumstances, the tribuneship marked the beginning of a career, but for Laetus, it was the end: as an officer of the defeated Otho, the only thing he could do was retire, grateful to the gods that he had survived. Other officers were less fortunate: they were executed. Assuming that Laetus came from Hippo Regius and returned in the summer of 69, his son Caius Suetonius Tranquillus can not have been conceived before the winter of 69/70 and can not have been born before the autumn of 70. If he was Laetus' second child, he was born even later - although a date after, say, 73 is unlikely.

Seasoned with entertaining anecdotes and bits of scandalous gossip relating to the lives of the first 12 emperors, Suetonius' biographies offer a colorful picture of Roman imperial politics and society. Roman Literature: Suetonius Suetonius lived just a little later than Seneca , during the Flavian emperors and then into the reigns of Trajan and Hadrian . He lived at the same time as the younger Pliny , and was a friend of his. He was not himself much involved with politics, and did not come from one of the leading families of the Empire. He worked at court, though, apparently in charge of keeping records for the emperors of what they had done and what the emperors who came before them had done.
Because of his position, Suetonius was able to know more history than most people, and he decided to share that knowledge by writing biographies of all the Roman Emperors up to his own time, from Julius Caesar to Domitian . Not all of Suetonius' biographies survived, but most of them did. They are, along with the histories of
