Sa première nouvelle publiée de science-fiction "the God in the garden" parait dans Unknown R. Heinlein

"Zena, thoughts are formless, coded... Impulses without shape or substance or direction - until you convey them to someone else. Then they precipitate, and become ideas that you can put on the table and examine. You don't know what you think until you tell someone else about it." From The Dreaming Jewels (aka The Synthetic Man
Why doesn't Theodore Sturgeon have the same kind of cult following that surrounds the work of Philip K. Dick or H. P. Lovecraft ? Well, certainly Dick was far more prodigious (Sturgeon suffered from bouts with severe writer's block throughout his life), but Sturgeon was, stylistically, at least, a superior writer. The real answer is probably: Whereas Dick's obsession was "What is reality?", and Lovecraft plumbed the unknown, Sturgeon was most interested in love, and all its forms. He was one of the first science fiction writers to pen a gay-themed tale (1953's "The World Well Lost"), his brilliant non-supernatural vampire novel Some of Your Blood equated blood with love, and his final novel, Godbody , gave us a mysterious stranger who descends upon a small town to instill not fear, but - well, you know. Which is not to say Sturgeon's fiction was romantic or sentimental - as a dark fantasist he penned such classics as "It", "Shottle Bop" and "Killdozer". A born gymnast (it was his choice for a profession until he contracted rheumatic fever at 15), Sturgeon wrote with authenticity about circus performers in

There's Lone, the simpleton who can hear other people's thoughts and make a man blow his brains out just by looking at him. There's Janie, who moves things without touching them, and there are the teleporting twins, who can travel ten feet or ten miles. There's Baby, who invented an antigravity engine while still in the cradle, and Gerry, who has everything it takes to run the world except for a conscience. Separately, they are talented freaks. Together they compose a single organism that may represent the next step in evolution, and the final chapter in the history of the human race. Somewhere in this world there are six people who together can do anything. Some day, perhaps tomorrow, they will put their power to work and the world will be transformed. In the meantime they are waiting quietly. They look and often behave like people you know. But with a difference: they think of themselves as "I" not "we" because in a curious way they are One. That is the source of their strength. This is the story of how they met, and what they became...and what they intend to do.

The Theodore Sturgeon Award for the best short science fiction of the year was established in 1987 by James Gunn, Director of the Center for the Study of Science Fiction at KU, and the heirs of Theodore Sturgeon, including his widow Jayne Sturgeon and Sturgeon's children, as an appropriate memorial to one of the great short-story writers in a field distinguished by its short fiction. Sturgeon, born in 1918, was closely identified with the Golden Age of science fiction, 1939-1950, and was often mentioned as one of the four writers who helped establish that age. The others were Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, and A. E. van Vogt; all four had their first SF stories published in 1939. In addition to fiction (his best-known novel is the classic, More Than Human ), Sturgeon also wrote book reviews, poetry, screenplays, radio plays, and television plays, including two classic teleplays for the original Star Trek . He was a popular lecturer and teacher, and was a regular visiting writer at the University of Kansas's Intensive English Institute on the Teaching of Science Fiction. Sturgeon died in 1985. His books, manuscripts, and papers are being deposited at the University of Kansas, as he wished. Last year's winners were announced in Lawrence, Kansas, at the

"I am not a writer...a writer is someone who has to write. The only reason
I write is because it's the only way I can justify all the other things I didn't do." And he wanted to do everything, try everything, and learn about everything. In the end, Ted had gone thru a lot of it. He became a Science Fiction writer beginning with a few tentative stories in his late teens and then hit the floor running in 1939 as one of John Campbell's favorite writers and soon expanded into a nationally known author. Using all story lengths, Sturgeon was as good in one as in another: short stories "Graveyard Reader" and "A Touch of Strange;" novelettes "It" and "The Martian and the Moron;" novellas "The [Widget], the [Wadget], and Boff" (shades of the Kuttners) and "...And My Fear is Great;" novels
