-Review-
Seldom is a title so striking in its suspense and simultaneously so thought-provoking as THE LADY OF RHUDDESMERE...If one were to choose only one novel as leisure reading material, this would rate high on the list of "best" choices.

The Garden of the Stone returns readers to Mindwork, a world where Handpower (technology) is not only feared, but also hunted down and wiped out with bloodthirsty persistence. Mindpower (magic) drives this world Mindpower and the complete and total rule of the Guardians, a corrupt theocracy that once horded the Stone (a living entity of enormous power that could've righted the imbalance of technology and magic and healed two worlds back into one). However, the Stone disappeared, stolen by a prophesied hero who ignored his destiny and vanished. Fancy that. Aren't heroes supposed to nobly carry on, whether they want to or not? The book opens with Cariad, an empath and professional assassin, stalking a Roundhead. The Roundheads, Gestapo-like enforcers of the Guardians, seek not only to find the stolen Stone and its thief, but also to stamp out any resistance to the Guardian's totalitarian rule. Cariad discovers the location of a Gate from the Roundhead news that could help the resistance faction that she fights for. New orders await Cariad at her foster mother's hideout. An undercover member of the resistance disappeared. Did Konstant go over to the enemy? Are the resistance's efforts compromised? Resistance leaders order Cariad to infiltrate the Fortress and locate Konstant. Then she has two choices: rescue him or execute him.

The Arm of the Stone by Victoria Strauss review by Chad Cottle
When I picked up a copy of The Arm of the Stone , I had no idea who Victoria Strauss was. In the past I have been a little reluctant to pick up new books by new authors. Recently I picked up two novels from authors I had never read before and couldn't get through fifty pages before I lost interest and put the book down. Not so with this book. The idea of the story was intriguing. It had to do with MindPower and HandPower . In the society, HandPower is strictly guarded by the Book of Limits, an elaborate list of detailed instructions on the creation of all tools. Technological advances, you see, are considered evil. The main character's name is Bron. When his older brother Selwyn creates a better hoe, one that will help his mother in the garden, he finds himself in violation of the Book of Limits. The ensuing problems this creates and how Bron deals with it I will not reveal here. The Arm of the Stone is an organization of men and women who go about the countryside enforcing the Book of Limits. When the Arm of the Stone comes to deal with Bron's brother, you can imagine the chaos and termoil it creates for this family. As I read this wonderful novel, I was mesmerized by the dialoge, the characterization, the way all the people in this rich tale came together, how their personalities were so richly developed. This is exactly the kind of story I want to write. This is exactly the kind of story I long to find. It is a perfect novel. I could not resist sending Victoria and e-mail to tell her how much I appreciated this fine novel. We swapped a few e-mails back and forth and in so doing I learned, to my immense delight, that Victoria is just completing volume two. And she told me it is a long book. I love long boks.

Writer's of the Future Contest L. Ron Hubbard review by Chad Cottle
I had the distinct honor of attending the Annual Award Ceremonies for the winners of the L. Ron Hubbard Writer's of the Future Contest this year. It was in Hollywood, just a few blocks from the famed Chinese Theater. It is hard to describe how I felt. It was simply magnificent. There were such notable writers there as Dave Wolverton, Tim Powers, Jerry Pournelle, and Kevin J. Anderson. Those are only a few. I did not know until I went to the ceremony who the winners were. I was very surprised to find that my friend David Masters was a winner. That is not his real name, but I will not reveal that here. He was the man who actually introduced me to my wife and helped us financially during our first year of marriage. That was almost six years ago. He was struggling to be a writer then, and now he is officially a published writer. It took a lot of time and effort, and I tip my hat to him. During the award ceremony, the most recent volume of the contest was unveiled. For the first time, it was put on sale. I did, of course, purchase a copy. I have read the last three volumes of the contest and found each of them to be of extremely high quality. Each story represents the best of the up and coming writers. I have not once been disappointed with a story I have found in each of these three volume. I hope to one day, very soon, be one of the winners. I have submitted to the contest seven times, now. Without going into detail about the stories in this volume, I just want to say that if you are serious about being a writer, you need to read these books and submit your stories to the contest. It truly is the proving ground for making it in the field.

A vicious mountain lion attack bares the empty truth of Kathleen Cooper's marriage. Fleeing to the Swiss Alps for a fresh start, she discovers a dark family secret - and that her new friends harbor mysteries of their own. Click here for more on Break Free and other Autumn Rose Publishing books In The Garden of the Stone , Victoria Strauss expands upon the themes of technology, spirituality and human nature she took up in The Arm of the Stone . This story of parallel worlds divided by their choices to use either mindpower or handpower moves in unexpected and satisfying new directions. Strauss introduces intriguing new characters and details the sometimes painful enlightenment of familiar ones. Bron, the man whom secret prophecy said would restore a balance between mindpower and handpower, vanished decades ago with the Stone a powerful talisman through which the unfathomable energy and wholeness of the world can be approached by people with the Gift. Yet though the Stone is gone, much on the surface of the world of mindpower remains the same. The changes in the world since the loss of the Stone have been insidious. The theocracy of the Fortress still rules, maintaining an elaborate charade to keep the awareness of the Stone's loss from the masses. But constructions built with Gifts are beginning to fail across the world, and not even the ultra-conservative Reddened faction of the Arm of the Stone can stop the apparent unbinding of mindpower.

... Johnson Street Bridge History The Johnson Street Bridge was designed under the direction of Mr. F. M. Preston, City Engineer in 1920. This is a Bascule type bridge in which one end rises while a counter weight lowers on the opposite end. The Johnson Street Bridge has two separate Bascules, the Railway section and the Highway section. The Strauss Bascule Company Limited who held the patents on the design prepared the design for the bascule spans and the operating machinery. Joseph Strauss later went on to design the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The superstructure of the bridge was fabricated in Walkerville, Ontario and contains 100 tons of steel. The City of Victoria Engineering Department built the sub-structure of the bridge. It required 10,000 cubic yards of concrete. The main opening span is 148 feet in length and when in the open position is balanced over a 45-foot fixed span. The eastern approach is spanned by a 110-foot fixed girder while the western approach has a 73-foot fixed girder. The counter weight block on the highway span is a hollow concrete structure and contains a number of smaller concrete weights and tips the scale at over 780-tons. It balances the 350-ton opening span. The linkage is moved by two large racks which are driven by two 75 horsepower electric motors.
