Victoria Strauss Interview (Mar 1999) Q: How does one grow up to be a fantasy writer? V: If you're me, you grow up reading myths and fairy tales. Even as a very small child, this was my favorite kind of reading. Although I read widely (besides fantasy and science fiction, mystery is my favorite genre), I always come back to mythic or fairy-tale literature. When I began writing, at the age of 17, it just seemed natural to write fantasyI honestly can't remember ever wanting to write anything else. Q: Which authors would you say have been your greatest inspiration sources? V: Some of my all-time favorites are Ursula LeGuin (especially THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS), John Crowley (especially LITTLE, BIG) Mervyn Peake (the GORMENGHAST trilogy), Guy Gavriel Kay (especially THE FIONAVAR TAPESTRY), Jane Gaskell (THE CITY), Anne McCaffrey's first Pern books, and anything by Patricia McKillip. I've read many books over the years, but these are the ones that stay with me. Q: Any regrets in becoming a full time writer?

Writer Beware
by Victoria Strauss
There are sharks out there in the literary waters. Literary deceptions abound, from fee-charging agents to dishonest book doctors to fraudulent subsidy publishers to fake contests. Some of them are staggeringly successfulEdit Ink, for instance, an editing firm that engaged in a kickback scheme with disreputable literary agents and established its own bogus agencies to send yet more business its way, made millions of dollars before writers and writers' groups finally blew the whistle.
Edit Ink's owners have been indicted, and ordered to pay fines as well as reparations to the writers they defrauded. But law enforcement isn't very interested in literary fraud, much of which involves relatively small amounts of money (per person, that isin aggregate, literary fraud is a multi-million-dollar-a-year business). The vast majority of the sharks go unpublicized and unpunished, leaving them free not just to separate unsuspecting writers from their cash, but to spoil their hopes and dreams.
The good news is that you can protect yourself, with a little information and a healthy dose of caution. Below are some tips and resources to help you do so.

Reading R. Scott Bakker's debut novel, The Darkness That Comes Before , I had that feeling of discovery tempered, it has to be said, with a certain amount of frustration, for this fascinating, occasionally brilliant book is also overwritten and self-indulgent. Nevertheless, it's an impressive start to what looks likely to become a noteworthy epic fantasy trilogy.

A Conversation With Victoria Strauss
by Claire E. White Bestselling fantasy author Victoria Strauss was born in Exeter, New Hampshire. Her father, a university professor, was offered numerous research grants and guest professorships. As a result, during her childhood and adolescence her family lived several U.S. states, Ireland, England, and Germany, and traveled throughout Europe. Her mother is a published novelist. As a child, she loved to read and became hooked on writing as a teenager, completing her first novel, The Lady of Rhuddesmere , at the age of seventeen. Victoria graduated from Vassar College with a degree in Comparative Religion, a choice which she says, "didn't do much to help me find a conventional job, but did satisfy my fascination with world belief systems, an interest that enduringly informs my writing." After graduation, she took a number of jobs to support her writing habit, eventually taking a permanent job as the financial manager of a not-for-profit corporation "a very strange place for a "D" math student to find herself!" notes Victoria. Ten years after she wrote it

Victoria Strauss is the author of six fantasy novels, including The Arm of the Stone The Garden of the Stone , and her most recent, The Burning Land , just out from HarperCollins Eos. She’s a regular book reviewer for the online journal SF Site, and her articles on writing have appeared in Writer’s Digest and elsewhere. She’s an active member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, where she serves as vice-Chair of the Writing Scams Committee and maintains the Writer Beware literary scams warning website ( www.writerbeware.com ). She welcomes visitors to her own website: www.victoriastrauss.com If I understand correctly, you wrote your first novel right after you graduated from high school. It took almost a decade, but that novel ( The Lady of Rhuddesmere) was published and well-received. Tell me about those nearly-ten intervening years: were you just an amazing writer when you were 17, or did you do a lot of editing and revising over the years to make it publishable? Meredith Charpentier, the editor who did eventually buy it, was an old-fashioned Maxwell Perkins kind of editor who was willing to work intensively with an author to turn a flawed manuscript into a publishable book. Under her guidance I completely rewrote it (among other things, she wanted me to shift from a third- to a first-person viewpoint), and then rewrote it again. It was a tough experience, and I had to put my ego on hold. But it was also incredibly rewarding, and I learned a huge amount about writing by doing it. I’ll always be grateful to Meredith for being so generous with her time and wisdom.

The series, which includes works by Dick, Zelazny, Silverberg, and Delany, has proven so successful that Millennium plans a similar Fantasy Masterworks series, beginning this year. The Dispossessed which has not been out of print since its original publication in 1974 is perhaps Le Guin's most famous work, and arguably her most intellectually challenging. It's a book of opposites: a utopian novel that doesn't flinch from exposing the flaws of its model society, a feminist-themed narrative with a male protagonist, a social commentary that presents communal cooperation as the truest human ideal, yet focuses on the inevitable separateness of the creative individual within such a structure. Through these dichotomies, Le Guin examines the tension between human aspiration and human nature, between what can be dreamed and what can be achieved. This larger theme, together with Le Guin's mature mastery of her craft, give

Interview by Tina Morgan
Fiction Factor - What prompted you to create Writer Beware?
Victoria Strauss - When I first went online about five years ago, I didn't have much idea of how common literary fraud really is. My own path to publication was pretty smoothI never ran across any questionable practices at all, and I'm afraid I thought my experience was typical. I was shocked to discover, through my participation in various online writers' forums, how many writers have been defrauded by disreputable agents, publishers, book doctors, and others. I became fascinated enough, and then angry enough, to do quite a bit of research on the subject.
Around this time I was checking out the "call for volunteers" section of the website of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (of which I'm a member), and saw a request for a volunteer to create a section of the website that would warn about literary scams. It seemed a perfect match between my interest and SFWA's need. That's how Writer Beware came about.
FF - Can you tell us a little more about the site and about the SFWA Writing Scam Committee?

When a popular jock torments her in class she hauls off and slugs him landing them both in detention on trash pick-up detail. Eventually they fall in love but their togetherness and Lucy's acceptance of having a home are threatened when an arsonist sets cars in the neighborhood on fire and everyone thinks it was someone from the group home. When she sneaks out to meet Nate, who has a camcorder, and they try to catch the perpetrator they end up attempting to extinguish a fire and Nate is arrested. Fortunately it moves onward to a wonderful ending. After dealing with kids in the system for 17 years and living with foster kids 13 years (approximately 70 stayed in our house for varying lengths of time) I look very closely at books about them and usually find them wanting but Last Chance Texaco is right on. Hartinger captured the voices of the kids perfectly and portrayed a system that doesn?t work but has some really good caring people trying to work with it extremely well

SFR INTERVIEW WITH VICTORIA STRAUSS by Jody Wallace, 2004 1) THE BURNING LAND (TBL) is a fantasy novel, but the romantic aspects of it are intense. Relationship issues definitely influence many of the characters' choices. Did that just feel "right" for this particular book or do you often find yourself including heavier romantic threads when you conceive of story ideas? Both as a reader and a writer, a good love story is something I really enjoy, and I always try and include one when I'm planning a novel. I started out writing young adult fantasy, where romantic elements had to be muted, if present at all. One of several reasons I made the switch to adult fiction was to be able to write a complex (and consummated) romantic relationship. 2) Following up from that questionthat one being more abstracttell us a little bit about your various books and how (and if) they fit in the speculative romance subgenre. As I mentioned, my first three novels were YA. There are some implied romantic elements, but they don't play a large part in the overall story. By contrast, my adult books all feature a love story as an important element of the plot.

Ever since powerful mages nearly destroyed the world, however, the use of magic has been severely regulated. Shapers take drugs to make it nearly impossible for them to use their powers, and when they do, it's only in worship of Ârata. Both the kingthe leader of secular Arsaceand the Brethrenthe near-immortal descendents of the First Messenger of Âratawere dethroned during a recent uprising of a cult that thought Ârata didn't exist, but they've regained power. There is also a prophecy that the First Messenger was only the first, and when the second comes, Ârata will wake and return the earth to what they called the primal age (their version of Heaven). Into this complex religious and social web walks our hero, a devout Shaper named Gyalo, who is asked by the Brethren to journey into the Burning Land, which is sacred, and investigate a force the Dreamers have sensed there. They think it might be renegade Shapers, amoral, unchained, and able to wreak destruction if they so chose. Gyalo is chosen because he's unusually pious and the Brethren feel that, no matter what, he'll do what's needed without breaking his vows to Ârata.
