"On Becoming a Poet" by Mark Strand
In the introduction to The Making of a Poem: A Norton Anthology of Poetic Forms, (Strand, Mark, and Boland, Eavan, eds.), New York, W.W. Norton and Company, 2001; we have wonderful essay that helps me to bridge the gap among various artistic forms of expression. Poetry to consciousness to perception to emotion; Painting, ditto; Shakespeare's works, ditto. What they all have in common is human emotion combined with human experience, expressed so that we may recognize that we are not alone. My... For Mark Strand and His Moon
Reading Mark Strand’s beautiful, sharp,
Ragged words, late at night -
I wish I had such vision
He suddenly reminds me to look out
My own window She shines full behind the dark
Hanging shapes of eucalyptus
And turns the sea silver
Like smooth ice
That draws you in
To this forgotten night. The ocean is a glamorous seductress
With a floating string Of diamond oil wells At the edge of a black sky. The time on the clock is all ones And I am one with the window Where I could always look - But don’t Not like I constantly looked Out the window of the orphanage In those solitary days That I thought had ended But have not. As regular readers may know, I've been doing interviews with writers and artists for several years, and primarily under the aegis of ELF: Eclectic Literary Forum magazine. In 1998, I proposed to ELF that my next project for them be a series of mini-interviews with a few dozen writers. The interviews would solicit their thoughts on literature at the end of the 20th Century. I would ask all interviewees the same three questions. The series would appear in consecutive issues of ELF right into the year 2000. The proposal coincided with a trip I was making in July to University of the South (Sewanee), as ELF's good-will representative at Sewanee's annual writers' conference. There were several people on faculty who were ideal for the series. With the permission of Wyatt Prunty, the founder/director of the conference, I began work on the first set of mini-interviews.
That fall ELF unexpectedly closed its doors when publisher and co-founder, Sue Neubauer, became ill. C.K. Erbes, editor and co-founder, could not go on without Sue, who was half the spirit and energy of

W ILLIAM B AILEY: Artforum , and he identified a group, which was really not a group at all, but some painters that he was aware of, who were working figuratively. At the same time, Sidney Tillim had organized a realist show (which I was not in) and had also written some pieces for Artforum The New York Times MS: WB: I think that we were all up to very different things. Phillip Pearlstein was using figuration as a way of painting large, dynamic paintings that could compete with the abstract paintings of the time. MS: WB: MS: What about yourself? WB: MS: How about yourself in relation to previous realisms? WB: MS: How did your interest in still life come about? WB: MS: WB: plus MS: How would you tell somebody who was confused what to look for, what the difference was? WB: MS: What about other realists that you admire? WB: MS: How do you explain his popularity? WB: MS: So, would you be willing to say that figurative painting has not been totally eclipsed, that it is still vital?

Book Center Mark Strand Mark Strand is the author of ten books of poems, including Blizzard of One , which was awarded the 1999 Pulitzer Prize. Strand has also published a book of short stories, several translations from European and Latin American poets, essays, three children's books, and several monographs on contemporary artists.
Octavio Paz has written. "Mark Strand has chosen the negative path, with loss as the first step towards fullness: it is also the opening to a transparent verbal perfection." The Library Journal said of his work, "No poet his age has a more human voice or a more piercing melancholy... Death, exile, childhood, the vanished lover: loss is the occasion for the lyrics... Strand's mature work, more than ever concerned with mortality, makes one feel alive."

http://www.neropes.com/splice/sp11_sbraid_eye_tuck.htm
12-Strand Single Braid Eye Splice (Tuck)
Use with Megabraid
Step 1 - Eye Size
Measure from the end of the rope seven (7) times the circumference (or 21 times the diameter) in inches and make 'Mark A'. Tape at this mark. Now form desired eye size and make 'Mark B'.
Step 2 - Strand Separation
Tape each of the 12 strands and unlay strands back to 'Mark A'. Try to be careful not to remove twist from individual strands.
Step 3 - Pair Strands Rope is comprised of a total of 12 strands, six (6) strands with left hand twist and six (6) strands with right hand twist. Select one left twist strand and one right twist strand and tape together. Repeat this procedure so that you have taped six separate strand pairs. Select strands that are near one another as they emerge at tape wrap at 'Mark A'.
Step 4 - Marking Pairs Lay rope out, forming eye. Do not twist rope. Select three tapered pairs closest to the standing part of the rope and mark on tape: #1, #2, #3 respectively. Mark the other 3 pairs #4, #5, #6.
Step 5 - Strand Insertion
With fid, open rope at 'Mark B' and insert strand pairs #1, #2, and #3 completely through the rope at right angles to the rope axis. Once strands #1, #2, and #3 are through the rope, pull each strand so that taped end (Mark A) is snug against body of rope. It may be easier to pass the strand pairs through the rope one set at a time.

http://www.npg.si.edu/cexh/eye/html/l_strand.htm
Return Mark Strand born 1934 The painter Philip Pearlstein, best known for large paintings of nudes, has created a number of portraits. This watercolor of Mark Strand was made as a gift in 1983 when both men were collaborating on a book about contemporary figurative painters. Strand, a nationally acclaimed poet and former poet laureate, originally planned to be an artist. Pearlstein attracted Strand's attention as one of a group of figurative painters who, in the wake of abstract expressionism, suggested through their work "that our relationship to the physical world, a relationship that is perpetually in danger of being destroyed by inattention, can be salvaged."
A leading American figurative painter over the last forty years, Pearlstein focuses not on personality but on the formal elements of making art: pattern, composition, color, light, and highly finished detail. The watercolor of Strand, similar to the nudes in its size, close cropping, and emotional detachment, exemplifies what one critic called Pearlstein's "anesthetizing psychic withdrawal" from his subjects.
