Title : Keeping Things Whole Poet : Mark Strand Date : 12 Jun 2000 In a field Length : Text-only version Prev Index Next Your comments on this poem to attach to the end [ microfaq terry@ Keeping Things Whole In a field I am the absence of field. This is always the case. Wherever I am I am what is missing. When I walk I part the air and always the air moves in to fill the spaces where my body's been. We all have reasons for moving. I move to keep things whole. Mark Strand This sparse, philosophical free verse poem is from Mark Strand's 1964 "Sleeping With One Eye Open". Strand teaches at the University of Chicago, and is the Poet Laureate of the U.S. (though born a Canadian... another import we've acquired and made our own) I can turn the opening 3 lines around and around in my head for ages at a time, playing with the meanings, exploring the depth of the idea. These and the last 2 lines of that stanza are practically koans, and worthy of meditation. The second stanza seems just a short explanation for the sake of those with too little time for navel gazing, but the last stanza locks the poem's appeal to a drifter like me. A friend of mine was showing me Strand's 'Eating Poetry' in a compilation, and I opened to this one and fell in love with his talent at expressing such grand thoughts in so few beautiful words. gaurav@ From: Moletecles@ Second time (it is late for a party begun at noon.) A friend of mine - we met in 1971 died (age 63) a few weeks ago; at this year's Birmingham Festival "City Stages" there was a hole. Spider Martin is dead, and there is a hole no one could keep whole. At some time this evening, I recalled the last two lines of the Mark Strand poem, did a google search, and thankfully found this site. Thank you.

I have been eating poetry. The librarian does not believe what she sees. Her eyes are sad and she walks with her hands in her dress. The poems are gone. The light is dim. The dogs are on the basement stairs and coming up. Their eyeballs roll, their blond legs burn like brush. The poor librarian begins to stamp her feet and weep. She does not understand. When I get on my knees and lick her hand, she screams. I am a new man. I snarl at her and bark. I romp with joy in the bookish dark. Stranded:
Poet Mark Strand Preaches Political Indifference at UCI
Mark Strand is one of the most talented poets currently writing, producing beautiful and evocative lines like: Soon the house, with its shades
drawn closed, will send
small carpets of lampglow
into the haze and the bay
will begin its loud heaving
and the pines, frayed finials
climbing the hill, will seem to graze
the dim cinders of heaven.
He’s been greatly and justly lauded for his skill; he has served as the nation’s poet laureate and received a Pulitzer Prize for poetry. But to paraphrase another, greater poet, there are more things in heaven and Earth than are evident in Strand’s philosophy. Ostensibly lecturing at UC Irvine on “the future of poetry,” Strand the first recipient of the university’s Nichols Award for Humanities managed the January 27 talk without locating any of the issues confronting contemporary poetry. Indeed, what Strand delivered that evening was Poetry 101, a series of short if mildly amusing parables that attempted to define poetry.

Born in 1934 in Summerside on Prince Edward Island, Canada, to salesman Robert Joseph and Sonia (Apter) Strand, Strand was raised in cities throughout the United States because of his father’s work. Although his childhood ambition was to paint, he found himself writing poems while attending Antioch College, encouraged by author Nolan Miller who was his teacher. Strand received his bachelor of arts degree in 1957 and subsequently took a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting from Yale in 1959 and a master’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1962.

Four Decades of Mark Strand's Poetry

~E DWARD B YRNE
W EATHER W ATCH: M ARK S TRAND'S T HE W EATHER OF W ORDS
…how telling it is, and how appropriate, that in introducing an anthology
of the "best American poetry" of 1991 Strand also should have narrated
his own beginnings as a poet decades earlier. After all, a close examination
of Strand's poetry over those decades will uncover a number of poems that reflect
his ardor as a reader and a writer of poetry, works that continue to mirror the reverence he maintains for the art of poetry and the act of writing poems. … it's not that poetry reveals more about the world — it doesn't — but it reveals more about our interactions with the world than our other modes of expression. And it doesn't reveal more about ourselves alone in isolation, but rather it reveals that mix of self and other, self and surrounding, where the world ends and we begin, where we end and the world begins.
