July 2, 1896 OBITUARY
Harriet Beecher Stowe
Death of the Authoress of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" She Was Attacked with Congestion of the Brain and Partial Paralysis Last FridayTotally Unconscious Since Tuesday AfternoonHer Death Bed Surrounded by Relatives and Friends The Funeral Services This Afternoon. By THE NEW YORK TIMES
The Associated Press Harriet Beecher Stowe. ARTFORD, July 1.Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe, the authoress of "Uncle Tom's Cabin," "Dred," and other works of worldwide reputation, died at her home, 73 Forest Street, at noon today without regaining consciousness. She passed peacefully away, as though into a deep sleep. By her bedside at the time were her son, the Rev. Charles Edward Stowe of Simsbury, her two daughters, Eliza and Harriet; her sister, Mrs. Isabella Beecher Hooker, and her husband, the Hon. John Hooker; Dr. Edward B. Hooker, her nephew, who was also her medical attendant, and other relatives. Mrs. Stowe's malady of many years' continuance, a mental trouble, took an acute form on Friday, when congestion of the brain, with partial paralysis, appeared. During Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Mrs. Stowe was about the house, but suffering very much. Since Monday she had been confined to her bed, and yesterday afternoon became unconscious. Mrs. Stowe, until about seven years ago, was in good health, although she was frail bodily. She was about the city and attended church regularly at the Winsor Avenue Congregational Church, of which her son, the Rev. Charles E. Stowe, was then the pastor. Her health for some time, however, had been precarious, and she had needed the constant attention of a nurse, who accompanied her about her walks in the vicinity of her home. She always had pleasant words for the children of the neighborhood, with whom she talked in her rambles, and seemed to be at her brightest when thinking of and talking with them.

Harriet Beecher Stowe
Harriet Beecher Stowe was born in Litchfield, Connecticut and brought up with puritanical strictness. She had one sister and six brothers. Her father, Lyman Beecher, was a controversial Calvinist preacher. Her mother, Roxana Foote, died at forty-one – when Stowe was four. Her aunt, Harriet Foote, deeply influenced Stowe's thinking, especially with her strong belief in culture. Samuel Foote, her uncle, encouraged her to read works of Lord Byron and Sir Walter Scott. When Stowe was eleven years old, she entered the seminary at Hartford, Connecticut, kept by her elder sister, Catherine. The school had advanced curriculum and she learned languages, natural and mechanical science, composition, ethics, logic, mathematics: subjects that were generally taught to male students. Four years later she was employed as an assistant teacher. Her father married again and became the president of Lane Theological Seminary. Catherine and Harriet founded a new seminary, the Western Female Institute. With her sister, Stowe wrote a children's geography book. In 1834 Stowe began her literary career when she won a prize contest of the Western Monthly Magazine , and soon Stowe was a regular contributor of stories and essays. Her first book

Source: Library of Congress A Brief Assessment "So you are the little woman who wrote the book that created this great war." - Abraham Lincoln, 1862 (on meeting HBS) Contributing Editor Jane Tompkins ( Heath Anthology ) has identified three concerns regarding the teaching of Stowe: "(1) the assumption that she is not a first-rate author because she has only recently been recognized and has traditionally been classed as a 'sentimental' author, whose works are of historical interest only; (2) by current standards, Stowe's portrayal of Black people in Uncle Tom's Cabin is racist; and (3) a lack of understanding of the cultural context within which Stowe was working." Ms. Tomkins suggests that we teachers handle the first issue by discussing "how class and gender bias led to the selection of works by white male authors." For the second, we need to explain how assumptions about race have changed over the centuries; though well-meaning, Stowe uses stereotypes. As for the third concern, Ms. Tomkins suggests that we inform the students about the nineteenth century expectations of the purpose of life in the context of the legacy of puritanism. Other pertinent issues are the abolitionist and the women's suffrage movements. Although Stowe's views of Blacks are dated, attention should be given to Stowe's works. She was the most popular American writer of her time and her use of literay realism anticipates the writings of Howells, Twain, and Crane.

Biography of Harriet Beecher Stowe
HARRIET ELIZABETH BEECHER STOWE was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, June 15, 1812. Her father was Dr. Lyman Beecher, a distinguished clergyman. In 1833, with her father, she removed to Cincinnati, where, in 1836, she was married to the Rev. Calvin Stowe, who afterward became professor at Bowdoin College, and at Andover Theological School.
Mrs. Stowe has written very extensively, and her published works entitle her to a place among the greatest authors of fiction. While her fame rests upon her first great book, yet all of her works contain excellent qualities. Her genius is rare and original. For several years she has spent the greater part of her time in her Florida home, in company with her husband and daughters.
It is customary with most authors to classify female writers as the wife or sister or some other relative of some man. Mrs. Stowe, however, needs not the name of her husband, nor the world-wide fame of the Beechers to give her a place in the front ranks of literature. The world knows her as well as it knows her relatives, and its admiration for her is richly merited. < Great authors of 19th century literature >

by John H. Lienhard
Click here for audio of Episode 1206. Today, a woman turns slavery from theoretical wrong into personal evil. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. H arriet Beecher was her mother's 7th child. After the 9th, her mother died. Harriet was raised by her father , a Calvinist preacher in Connecticut who held forth on Hell and damnation, but denied the doctrine of predestination. When she was 22 they moved out to Cincinnati where he was to be President of a new seminary. Her father had only one faculty member, a bright, pudgy, and ineffectual fellow named Calvin Stowe. For a while, Calvin's wife Eliza befriended Harriet Beecher. So when Eliza died young, Harriet and Calvin were drawn together by a shared loss, and in 1836 Harriet became Harriet Beecher Stowe . Their first children were twin girls whom they chose to name Harriet and Eliza. Calvin was a piece of work. In a crisis, he simply went to bed. He had regular visions of ghosts. Still, an odd chemistry bound these two somewhat strange, and very plain, people. Maybe they were just easy on each other. When Harriet had had-it-up-to-here with bearing children and primitive life in early Cincinnati, she'd go East to take the water cure, leaving Calvin with the kids.

Harriet Beecher Stowe Author of Uncle Tom's Cabin by Patricia Chadwick http://www.historyswomen.com When President Abraham Lincoln met Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1862, he exclaimed "So you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war!" He was referring to her book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin , in which Harriet expressed her moral outrage at the institution of slavery in the United States and exposed its harmful effects on both whites and blacks. Harriet Beecher Stowe was born in Litchfield, Connecticut on June 14, 1811 in into one of America's most notable religious families. The Beecher family was at the forefront of numerous reform movements of the 19th century. Born the seventh child of the well known Congregational minister Lyman Beecher and Roxana Foote Beecher, she was their fourth daughter. Her father was a persuasive preacher, theologian, and founder of the American Bible Society, who also was active in the anti-slavery movement. Her mother was a woman of prayer, who asked the Lord to put the call of service on her children's hearts. This prayer was eventually answered in a mighty way. All the Beecher children spent their lives living out their Christian faith.

Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896)
Contributing Editor: Jane Tompkins
Classroom Issues and Strategies
The primary problems you are likely to encounter in teaching Stowe are (1) the assumption that she is not a first-rate author because she has only recently been recognized and has traditionally been classed as a "sentimental" author, whose works are of historical interest only; (2) by current standards, Stowe's portrayal of black people in Uncle Tom's Cabin is racist; and (3) a lack of understanding of the cultural context within which Stowe was working. In dealing with the first problem, you need to discuss the way masterpieces have been selected and evaluated. Talk about the socioeconomic and gender categories that most literary critics, professors, and publishers have belonged to in this country until recently, explaining how class and gender bias have led to the selection of works by white male authors. The second problem calls for an explanation of cultural assumptions about race, which would emphasize the wayhistorically scientific beliefs about race have changed in this country between the seventeenth century and our day. For her time, Stowe was fairly enlightened, although her writing perpetuates stereotypes that have since been completely discredited. The third problem requires that the instructor fill the class in on the main tenets of evangelical Protestantism and the cult of domesticity, which were central to Stowe's outlook on life and to her work. Beliefs about the purpose of human life (salvation), the true nature of reality (i.e., that it is spiritual), the true nature of power (that it ultimately resides in Christian love), and in the power of sanctity, prayer, good deeds, and Christian nurture would be crucial here.

Harriet Beecher Stowe was the daughter of a well known protestant preacher. After her mother died when she was four, her uncle Harriet Foote encouraged her interest in culture and her uncle Samuel Foote made her read Byron and Scott.
She worked as a teacher and in 1836 she married the widower Calvin Ellis Stowe, a professor at her father's seminary. They had seven children.
She wrote poems, travel books and novels for children as well as adults. "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (1852) was controversial because it dealt with slavery and aroused much public debate. In 1862 she visited president Lincoln and in Europe she became friendly with George Eliot, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Lady Byron. She met Lady Byron in 1853 during a promotion tour for "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and in 1856 the latter told her many details of her separation from Lord Byron. She also met Oliver Wendell Holmes and her work influenced Caroline Norton.
In reaction to a memoir by Lord Byron's mistress Teresa Guiccioli, she published "The True Story of Lady Byron" as an article in The Atlantic in 1869. She took sides with the late Lady Byron and accused Byron of an incestuous affair with his half sister Augusta. She also depicted Byron as an unreligious alcoholic and Lady Byron as patient and graceful. She wrote:
