Stone, Robert Absence of Mercy
Genre Short Story (19 pp.) Keywords Abandonment Acculturation Child Abuse Homicide ... Urban Violence Summary Mackay's story begins in the 1940s when, at age 5, he was sent to a "boarding school" run by the Catholic order of the Pauline Brothers. Mackay's mother had herself been institutionalized for paranoid schizophrenia and his father was not in the picture. In the school Mackay was exposed to pervasive violence: "intramural" violence wherein the stronger children taunted and beat up the weaker ones; classroom violence in which the instructors slapped or beat with a razor strop those boys they deemed to be errant in any respect; organized boxing matches; and, most feared, "statutory evening punishment" where students had been selected out by a Brother to be humiliated and beaten after the evening meal and prayers. The latter violence was characterized by "the absence of mercy" and a sadistic ritualism that induced "sick-making terror" in its victims.

I t is time for the old king to step down. The crown prince of Eutracia has reached the age of thirty and, as is traditional, he is to take the throne. Unfortunately, Prince Tristan doesn't want to be king, preferring his rather relaxed, carefree life just the way it is. Since the banishment of the evil Coven of Sorceresses and the end of the war three hundred years ago, Eutracia has been peaceful and serene, so with the Directorate of Wizards to aid him the King has little to do but supervise the day-to-day running of the kingdom. Tristan would rather practice swordplay with the Royal Guard. If only something would happen so he didn't have to be King...
Lucky Tristan. The Coven returns at the head of an army of bat-winged soldiers, interrupting the coronation and butchering the royal family and their wizardly advisors. Kidnapping Tristan's sister and stealing the jewel from which all magic originates, the Sorceresses leave Eutracia in chaos and return to the land of their exile, intent on brainwashing Princess Shailiha and taking control of her as-yet unborn child. For Tristan and his sister are the Chosen Ones, their coming prophesied long ago by a vanished race. So, aided by the lone surviving wizard of the Directorate, Tristan begins a race against time to rescue his sister and regain the jewel before Shailiha becomes the Fifth Sorceress and the Coven enslaves the world. On the way, he learns a lot of harsh lessons, forcing him to grow up and deal with his responsibilities.

Stone, Robert Stone, Robert, Vietnam War . His experiences there helped form the basis for his best-known novel, Dog Soldiers (1974, National Book Award), which was filmed as Who'll Stop the Rain (1978) with a screenplay by Stone. The book is an account of Vietnam-related drug smuggling, brutality, and disenchantment. Stone's philosophical bent, his vividly gritty style, and his edgy wit are evident in his portrayals of some of American life's darker aspects. His characters often fruitlessly attempt to deal with inescapable events, and the ghost of the Vietnam conflict hovers over much of his fiction. His other works include A Hall of Mirrors A Flag for Sunrise Children of Light Outerbridge Reach (1992), and Bear and His Daughter: Stories (1997). His acclaimed novel

37. Rising From The Sea
Illustrated article by robert Wernick for the Smithsonian on the huge prehistoric stone buildings on Malta and Gozo.
http://www.science.plym.ac.uk/departments/geography/malta/wernick.htm
Rising from the sea, the mysterious handiwork of giants.
Robert Wernick This article first appeared in the Smithsonian, September, 1996
The Remains of the Knight's occupation, a tower built to watch for invaders Now the Maltese, much to their surprise and to that of the learned world, are beginning to realise that they played a major role at another turning point in history. This one took place several thousand years ago, long before there were historians in existence to record it. Only some battered physical traces remain to bear witness. The most imposing can be found on the island of Gozo, just north-west of the main island of Malta, in the huge stone remains of a building to which the local peasants long ago gave the name Ggantija, the Giant's Tower. Rising abruptly at the edge of a barren plateau, the tower's scarred and jagged rock walls seem immensely thick and immensely old. They are in fact immensely old, part of a cluster of buildings spread over a ten-mile radius that, according to the latest scientific calculations, are the oldest free-standing stone monuments on the face of the earth. Just short of 6,000 years old, they antedate anything we think of as an advanced civilisation. More than 30 similar structures have been found on Malta and Gozo, and others are surely buried under villages and city streets. At least fourthe Giant's Tower on Gozo, Hagar Qim (pronounced had-jar im), Tar-xien (tar-shen) and Mnajdra (ny-dra) on the main island of Maltaare of a size that would be considered impressive anywhere on earth. Some of the stones of which they are built weigh more than 20 tons.
