She worked in the provinces as well as in Paris, and, like many young artists, was influenced by the rustic naturalists led by Bastien-Lepage. She adopted methods similar to theirs, and even though her subject matter gradually changed from rustic genre to medieval romance and biblical themes, her style continued to show her artistic allegiance clearly. She exhibited throughout the 1890s at the Royal Academy, and held a joint exhibition with her husband, the English landscape artist Adrian Stokes, at the Fine Art Society in 1900. The following obituary appeared in the The Connoisseur in September 1927: "The Late Mrs. Adrian Stokes." Marianne Prendlsberger Stokes, born in Graz, Austria, began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1884. The following year she was using her husband's name and was professionally known as Mrs. Adrian Stokes. Her figure and "fancy" subjects demonstrated her charm, sensitivity and skill as a painter. She was an Associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours. She was a pleasant person whose work, with its "curiously subtle appeal, deserves remembrance." She had been ill for some time.

August 12, 2002 Byline: Hilton Kramer There can't be many people on this side of the Atlantic who can claim any familiarity with the paintings of Adrian Stokes (1902-1972). If you've heard of Stokes at all, it's probably because of his prolific writings on art. Even in his native England, Stokes is far better-known as a writer than as a painter. Yet a painter he was, and a very good one, too, as we can see in the exhibition of pictures from the Adrian Stokes Estate on view this summer at the Salander-O'Reilly Galleries. Stokes took up painting in his mid-30's, when he'd already written half a dozen books and a number of exhibition reviews for the London Spectator. According to the late David Sylvester, whose essay on Stokes is reprinted in the catalog of the current exhibition, "For the first twenty years his pictures were the work of a sensitive amateur. But then a way of painting crystallised, above all in the still lifes, which produced some of the most beautiful and personal paintings of appearance done in England in the twentieth century." Lest this sound like too grand a claim for a painter who approached his pictorial tasks with an informed and fastidious modesty, Sylvester hastened to add that "Stokes is decidedly a minor artist, but also an authentic one, an exquisite one and a poetic one." Stokes' own assessment of his paintings was characteristically less ambitious in its claimsand more eccentric, but also more precise, in describing his aesthetic goals.

MAIN INDEX PAST EXHIBITIONS George Fitzpatrick: Works on Paper CATALOGUE Salander-O'Reilly Galleries announces an exhibition of 24 drawings by George Fitzpatrick. This exhibition will be a comprehensive survey of the major series Fitzpatrick has created over the past thirty years. The works are based on a wide variety of sources including the journals of the British archaeologist Sir Flinders Petrie, Homer, Lucian, and the Sung Dynasty poet, Su Tung P'O. As with almost all of Fitzpatrick's works, the texts are reproduced upon paper in a highly stylized script between bands of varying hue and intensity. Steven Litt of the Cleveland Plain Dealer has described the work as: "a literal representation of what it feels like to be immersed in a text that is so powerful and so significant that you never want it to end."
