Bram Stoker
Abraham "Bram" Stoker was born in Clontarf, Ireland on November 8th, 1847. After spending his early childhood bedridden by an unidentified illness, Stoker developed himself into an athlete in his adolescence, playing soccer and being named University Athlete at Trinity College, Dublin. He graduated with honors in Mathematics. Bram's father, a civil servant himself, secured a place for his son at Dublin Castle. There Bram wrote his first work, Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland: Collected Works of Bram Stoker , but it was not published until 1879, after he was already famous. He began publishing his stories in magazines regularly during his eight-year term at Dublin Castle: The Crystal Cup The Chain of Destiny The Spectre of Doom (1880). He also took unpaid positions as a theatre critic for Dublin's Evening Mail and as editor of The Irish Echo . In 1878 Stoker accepted the job as business manager for Sir Henry Irving's Lyceum Theatre. He left his civil service job, married Florence Balcombe (Stoker competed with Oscar Wilde for Florence's hand), and moved to London. In 1882, Stoker published his first book

This was the chance for him to develope a passion for reading, prelude to his passion for writing. At The Trinity College of Dublin, he got involved in literary and dramatic activities. After graduation, he became a civil servant, a job that he combined in 1871 with a position of dramatic critic at the Evening Mail. In 1876, after covering Henry Irving's performance in Hamlet, he met the actor and they became lifelong friends. His reputation as a writer was initiated in 1872, when The London Society published The Crystal Cup, a short story. In 1878, Bram moved to London after he had married Oscar Wilde's ex-mistress Florence Balcombe. There he became the acting manager of Irving's Lyceum Theatre. Additionally, he wrote a large number of sensational novels, his most famous being the vampire tale Dracula (1897). Other works include A Life of Irving, The Snake's Pass, Under the Sunset, and the Lair of the White Worm which was turned to a movie by Ken Russell.

Finegal or Abraham?
The Choice of Florence Balcombe
For the past several months, Florence Balcombe has been dating Finegal O'Flahertie, the baby boy of Speranza, an unconventional poetess who fights for women's rights. To the outrage of many, the six-foot Speranza coolly justifies her public extravagances by saying that she is "above respectability."
Like his memorable mother, young Finegal is colorful and sensitive and writes poetry from the heart. But Florence Balcombe is the daughter of a lieutenant colonel who sees no great value in poetry or in the boys who write it. Lieutenant Colonel Balcombe much prefers young Abraham Stoker, a boy that had been sickly as a child but who "whipped himself into manhood" with a diet of strict discipline and athletic endurance. And like the Lieutenant Colonel, Abraham works as a civil servant. He is a file clerk at the courthouse.
Back home in Ireland, a slightly intimidated Abraham Stoker decides to publish a book of his own. Needless to say, "The Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland" is not a huge success. In London however, Finegal O'Flahertie continues to pile fame upon fame as both poet and playwright. His short stories and magazine articles are in constant demand.

    Dracula
Search all of Dracula One of the most popular stories ever told, Dracula has been re-created for the stage and screen hundreds of times in the last century. Yet it is essentially a Victorian saga, an awesome tale of thrillingly bloodthirsty vampire whose nocturnal atrocities reflect the dark underside of a supremely moralistic age. Above all, Dracula is a quintessential story of suspense and horror, boasting one of the most terrifying characters in literature: centuries-old Count Dracula, whose diabolical passions prey upon the innocent, the helpless, the beautiful. Bram Stoker, who was also the manager of the famous actor Sir Henry Irving, wrote seventeen novels. Dracula remains his most celebrated and enduring work even today this Gothic masterpiece has lost none of the spine-tingling impact that makes it a classic of the genre.
