Robert Louis Stevenson
A review by Bradford Torrey
S "All through my boyhood and youth," he says, "I was known and pointed out for the pattern of an idler; and yet I was always busy on my own private end, which was to learn to write. I kept always two books in my pocket, one to read, one to write in. As I walked, my mind was busy fitting what I saw with appropriate words; when I sat by the roadside, I would either read, or a pencil and a penny version-book would be in my hand, to note down the features of the scene or commemorate some halting stanzas." Discuss this article in
See an index of Classic Reviews from The Atlantic Monthly.
So he "lived with words." And the point of the confession is that these "childish tasks," as he calls them in another place, were done "consciously for practice." "I had vowed that I would learn to write. That was a proficiency that tempted me; and I practiced to acquire it, as men learn to whittle, in a wager with myself." Such a course would never give him originality; but no matter. For the present it was not originality he was seeking; he was not yet writing books: he was learning his trade. Whether, having learned it, he should turn out to have original genius to go with his knowledge and put it to use, was a question that the event alone could determine. Originality is a gift of the gods; it is born with a man, or it is not born with him. The technique of a prose style, on the other hand, could be learned, and Stevenson's present business was to learn it, in the only way of which he had any knowledge, the way in which his masters themselves had learned it,practice based on imitation.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) Scottish essayist, poet, and author of fiction and travel books, known especially for his novels of adventure. Stevenson's characters often prefer unknown hazards to everyday life of the Victorian society. His most famous study of the abysmal depths of personality is THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1886). Many of Stevenson's stories are set in colorful locations, they have also horror and supernatural elements. Arguing against realism, Stevenson underlined the "nameless longings of the reader", the desire for experience. "But we are so fond of life that we have no leisure to entertain the terror of death. It is a honeymoon with us all through, and none of the longest. Small blame to us if we give our whole hearts to this glowing bride of ours, to the appetities, to honour, to the hungry curiosity of the mind, to the pleasure of the eyes in nature, and the pride of our own nimble bodies." (from 'Aes Triplex') Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson was born in Edinburgh. He was the only son of Thomas Stevenson, a prosperous joint-engineer to the Board of Northern Lighthouses, and Margaret Balfour, daughter of a Scottish clergyman. Thomas Stevenson invented, among others, the marine dynamometer, which measures the force of waves. Thomas's grandfather was Britain's greatest builder of lighthouses.

"The bottle imp" (1893)
by Robert Louis Stevenson
The following is a Gaslight etext.... A message to you about There was a man of the Island of Hawaii, whom I shall call Keawe; for the truth is, he still lives, and his name must be kept secret; but the place of his birth was not far from Honaunau, where the bones of Keawe the Great lie hidden in a cave. This man was poor, brave, and active; he could read and write like a schoolmaster; he was a first-rate mariner besides, sailed for some time in the island steamers, and steered a whaleboat on the Hamakua coast. At length it came in Keawe's mind to have a sight of the great world and foreign cities, and he shipped on a vessel bound to San Francisco. All of a sudden, the man smiled and nodded, and beckoned Keawe to enter, and met him at the door of the house. "This is a fine house of mine," said the man, and bitterly sighed. "Would you not care to view the chambers?" So he led Keawe all over it, from the cellar to the roof, and there was nothing there that was not perfect of its kind, and Keawe was astonished.

51. Criticism Is Love. --On Duality Of Purpose; Includes Mrs. Robert Louis Stevenson
Article on the author's relationship with his wife, Fanny Van de Grift Osborne, in the context of Aesthetic Realism.
http://www.barbaraallen.org/Criticism-Is-Love-Mrs-Stevenson.html
CRITICISM IS LOVE Aesthetic Realism Seminar By Barbara Allen, There Are Wives Includes Mrs. Robert Louis StevensonFanny Van de Grift Osborneand women today Introduction In the late 1800s, these words appeared in a short novel, published in England, and deeply affected people all over the world: I resolved in my future conduct to redeem the past; and I can say with honesty that my resolve was fruitful of some good. You know yourself how earnestly in the last months...I laboured to relieve suffering; you know that much was done for others,...but I was still cursed with my duality of purpose and as the first edge of my penitence wore off, the lower side of me, so long indulged, so recently chained down, began to growl for license. These sentences by Robert Louis Stevenson from his powerful story Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are about the two opposites which Aesthetic Realism says are in all people, including wivesgood and evil, respect and contempt. The man who wrote these words was keenly aware of the struggle between these two mighty forces: his "duality of purpose," what was good and "the lower side" of human beings. And, I believe, his marriage with Fanny Van de Grift Osborne is important in the history of marriage, because criticism was such an essential part of their care for each other. Tonight I will be talking about this aspect of their marriage, in relation to what I learned from Eli Siegel and Aesthetic Realism classes and lessons, and about what women are learning in Aesthetic Realism consultations today.

Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON's THE MERRY MEN CHAPTER I.
EILEAN AROS I T was a beautiful morning in the late July when I set forth on foot for the last time for Aros. A boat had put me ashore the night before at Grisapol; I had such breakfast as the little inn afforded, and, leaving all my baggage till I had an occasion to come round for it by sea, struck right across the promontory with a cheerful heart. The Ross, as we call it, is a promontory neither wide nor high, but as rough as God made it to this day; the deep sea on either hand of it, full of rugged isles and reefs most perilous to seamenall overlooked from the eastward by some very high cliffs and the great peak of Ben Kyaw. The Mountain of the Mist , they say the words signify in the Gaelic tongue; and it is well named. For that hill-top, which is more than three thousand feet in height, catches all the clouds that come blowing from the seaward; and, indeed, I used often to think that it must make them for itself; since when all heaven was clear to the sea level, there would ever be a streamer on Ben Kyaw. It brought water, too, and was mossy(*) to the top in consequence. I have seen us sitting in broad sunshine on the Ross, and the rain falling black like crape upon the mountain. But the wetness of it made it often appear more beautiful to my eyes; for when the sun struck upon the hillsides there were many wet rocks and watercourses that shone like jewels even as far as Aros, fifteen miles away.

A piercing pain, a killing sin,
And to my dead heart run them in!" Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894), Scottish author. The Celestial Surgeon (l. 9-14). . . Modern British Poetry. Louis Untermeyer, ed. (7th rev. ed., 1962) Harcourt, Brace and Company. "It is just this rage for consideration that has betrayed the dog into his satellite position as the friend of man. The cat, an animal of franker appetites, preserves his independence. But the dog, with one eye ever on the audience, has been wheedled into slavery, and praised and patted into the renunciation of his nature. Once he ceased hunting and became man's plate-licker, the Rubicon was crossed. Thenceforth he was a gentleman of leisure; and except the few whom we keep working, the whole race grew more and more self-conscious, mannered and affected."
