A Quest for Order: Wallace Stevens and Emile Durkheim
By Ericka Wills To more fully understand Stevens' poem "The Idea of Order at Key West," one can look at the ideas of the poem in context of social-philosophical thought. Emile Durkheim's theories on religion closely parallel those of Stevens. Both men believe that there is no supreme greater being, or God, that gives things order and meaning. But both men also believe that humans need to read order and meaning into the world to understand it, even if the meaning humans imply is false because there is no God. Since this aspect of both men's ideas is so similar, Durkheim's outline of ideas on religion can form a model by which Stevens' poem can be analyzed. Furthermore, although there is no way to prove that Steven's poem is based on Durkheim's ideas, there are enough similarities that the two sets of ideas can be compared. Both Stevens and Durkheim believe that humans read order into the world to aid in understanding. In general, Durkheim believed that humans create religion as a way to give events meaning and explain why things happen. In "Origin of the Idea of the Totemic Principle," Durkheim elaborates on these ideas. Men know well that they are acted upon, but they do not know by whom. So they must invent by themselves the idea of these powers with which they feel themselves in connection, and from that, we are able to catch a glimpse of the way by which they are led to represent them under forms that are really foreign to their nature and to transfigure them by thought. The plum survives its poems. It may hang
In the sunshine placidly, colored by ground
Obliquities of those who pass beneath,
Harlequined and mazily dewed and mauved
In bloom. Yet it survives in its own form, Beyond these changes, good, fat, guzzly fruit. So Crispin hasped on the surviving form, For him, of shall or ought to be in is. (The Comedian as the Letter C, 408-416)

Sultry moon-monsters Are dissolving. Fill your black hull With white moonlight. There will never be an end To this droning of the surf. The Place of the Solitaires Let the place of the solitaires Be a place of perpetual undulation. Whether it be in mid-sea On the dark, green water-wheel, Or on the beaches, There must be no cessation Of motion, or of the noise of motion, The renewal of noise And manifold continuation; And, most, of the motion of thought And its restless iteration, In the place of the solitaires, Which is to be a place of perpetual undulation. Commentary by Mark Strand Both of these poems wears a disguise each draws us to the activity of writing poems, although they seem like they may be about other things. Mainly, the seashore or that liminal space between the sea and the land, the shore. But in fact they are about that liminal space that exists between the poem and reality. The clue to this separate undercurrent in "Fabliau of Florida" rests on the pun on the first and last words of the poem. The first being "barque," the last being "surf." Once this is known, the separate other intention of the poem should be clear. In "The Place of the Solitaires," one only has to remember the perpetual undulation has not only to do with the recurrent motion of the waves but the desired motion of the hand as it writes.

The hero of Wallace Stevens's poetry is the human imagination. Like Emily Dickinson's, Stevens's sedate and uneventful outer life concealed a lush and adventurous inner one. Such adventures were for Stevens not an escape from reality but a journey toward a new reality. Although Stevens was no philosopherhe was a bold and brilliant poethe explored the workings of the human mind with a precision philosophers might envy. Academy of American Poets Listen to Stevens read "The Idea of Order at Key West." In addition, this site contains a biography, a bibliography, and some of Stevens's most well-known poems.
