Defining Stephenson
by Adrienne Martini
Speculative fiction is a lot like obscenity. You know both when you see them and that makes pining down a definition difficult. One person’s seductive nude is easily another’s First Amendment exemption. One reader’s classic SF dystopia is easily another’s meta-fiction commentary. Despite the numerous definitions that lurk in dictionaries and hard drives (like “science fiction is a story based on fictional, scientific possibilities” or “Fantasy is a tale that has events happening that could never happen in the natural world” , none actually satisfies. Is David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest science fiction? How about A Clockwork Orange ? And how does fantasy fit into the genre classifications? And where is the boundary between it and science fiction? And isn’t all fiction fantasy on some level? It’s enough to make any taxonomist’s head spin. We need the categories, of course. Some writers may dream of breaking free of the genre ghetto and have wild dreams of bookstores simply divided down the middle like gendered clothes at the Gap. Non-fiction would live on the left side of the store. Fiction would live on the right. Every book would be alphabetical by author. Readers would go quietly mad, of course, because they could never find something new to read if they didn’t already know the author or title. Random discoveries would be a challenge if all books were lumped together, with Harlequin romances rubbing against Harlan Ellison and Tom Clancy.

Snow Crash (by Neal Stephenson)
This science-fiction novel combines a scenario of a largely broken near-term future with a religious conspiracy based on ancient theories about information warfare dating back to the Sumerian ages. The protagonist is called Hiro Protagonist (neat, ain't it?), and he's a pizza delivery guy for one of the dominating enterprises in that near future: Uncle Enzo's pizza delivery company. But he's not only that: In what is called the MetaVerse, a virtual reality world with 3D characters, Hiro is one of the superheroes - an original hacker and a great Sword fighter. Somehow, he is being entangled into the story of a dangerous virus "Snow Crash", which selectively annihilates the brains of people that come into contact with it. While Hiro dives into this issue, he is joined by Y.T., a very young, sort-of-skateboarding girl. And a fascinating story is being told. What is amazing about "Snow Crash" is how Neal Stephenson manages to convey a sense of space and continuity through the whole story, which is not that easy given the convoluted setup he has built. You never really miss where Hiro or Y.T. currently are and what their motivating drives are.

91. FICTION A NEW STORY BY NEAL STEPHENSON
FICTION. BY neal stephenson. Hard to imagine a less attractive lifestyle for a young man just out of college than going back to Bismarck

FICTION
BY NEAL STEPHENSON Hard to imagine a less attractive life-style for a young man just out of college than going back to Bismarck to live with his parents - unless it's living with his brother in the suburbs of Chicago, which, naturally, is what I did. Mom at least bakes a mean cherry pie. Joe, on the other hand, got me into a permanent emotional headlock and found some way, every day, to give me psychic noogies. For example, there was the day he gave me the job of figuring out how many jelly beans it would take to fill up Soldier Field. Let us stipulate that it's all my fault; Joe would want me to be clear on that point. Just as he was always good with people, I was always good with numbers. As Joe tells me at least once a week, I should have studied engineering. Drifted between majors instead, ended up with a major in math and a minor in art - just about the worst thing you can put on a job app. Joe, on the other hand, went into the ad game. When the Internet and optical fiber and HDTV and digital cash all came together and turned into what we now call the Metaverse, most of the big ad agencies got hammered - because in the Metaverse, you can actually whip out a gun and blow the Energizer Bunny's head off, and a lot of people did. Joe borrowed 10,000 bucks from Mom and Dad and started this clever young ad agency. If you've spent any time crawling the Metaverse, you've seen his work - and it's seen you, and talked to you, and followed you around.

Neal Stephenson
Neal Stephenson is an American cyberpunk author. He's born in 1960 in United States and lives in Seattle, Washington. He also writes under the pseudonym Stephen Bury, shared with his uncle, J.Frederick George, an historian. Neal Stephenson is the first second-generation, native cyberpunk science-fiction writer. Unlike most of the original '80s cyberpunks, he grew up in the new technoculture and, with a hacker's background, knows how it really works. Neal Stephenson now resides in a comfortable home in the western hemisphere where he spends his time when not side-tracked by his computer, rollerblading or parenting attempting to write more books.

Last week's column inspired by Neal Stephen son's new novel, Quicksilver , produced an email from Stephen son's publisher, which led to me chatting with him on the telephone. The result was the following interview, done by cellphone as both of us traveled to different engagements. It's a bit on the casual side, but I found it interesting. TCS: What got you interested in the Seventeenth Century? Neal Stephen son: It started with the personal stories of Newton and Leibniz. Then I started to learn about Hooke, and the other members of the Royal Society, and it kind of snowballed. There were so many things going on back then with ramifications and consequences that we feel today that I just got sucked in. What I found interesting on a political level was that the Cromwell types were pushing a bunch of ideas that struck people as nuts at the time, but that are bedrock principles of modern society things like free enterprise and separation of church and state and limited government that took years to actually achieve.
