He was the son of a perpetual-motion-machine-obsessed goldsmith. He took an M.A. at Oxford, and, like many learned men, became a man of the cloth. But he devoted all his spare time to mathematics and Natural Philosophy—what we today call Science. By age 24 he was publishing speculative books about travel to the moon, and in 1641 he published a treatise on cryptology entitled Mercury (on which the fictitious Cryptonomicon of my novels is very loosely based). David Kahn, in his peerless The Codebreakers , calls Mercury "the first book in English on cryptology" and describes it as "a succinct volume, very well grounded in the classics." For much of the time that England was a Commonwealth under Cromwell, Wilkins was Warden of Wadham College, Oxford, where he gathered about him a circle of inquisitive minds that included Robert Boyle, Robert Hooke, and Christopher Wren. Of this group, Thomas Sprat writes, in his History of the Royal Society The University had, at that time, many Members of its own, who had begun a

Investor Relations The Salon Interview: Neal Stephenson The author of "Cryptonomicon" and the "Baroque Cycle" talks about the brighter side of Puritanism, the feud between Newton and Leibniz, and the literary world's grudge against science fiction. By Laura Miller Rumor had it that Neal Stephenson would follow "Cryptonomicon," his bestselling 1999 novel combining present-day high-tech entrepreneurs and World War II-era derring-do, with a similar tale of fugitive data and high adventure set sometime in the near future. Last year, with the publication of the first of the three-volume "Baroque Cycle," "Quicksilver," Stephenson revealed that he'd turned the dial on his time machine in the other direction. "Quicksilver," written by hand with a fountain pen in an alcove lined with a huge map of early 18th-century London, immersed the author and his legions of devoted readers in one of the most intellectually exciting and politically momentous periods of history. It was the age of such scientific geniuses as Isaac Newton, Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz and the undersung polymath

CYNTHIA ROSE - REAL TIME HOT TIPS
    • "CYBERLEBRITY" PENS NEW NOVEL As the author of Snow Crash , a best-seller with Net users, US author Neal Stephenson has become what he scathingly calls a "cyberlebrity". Snow Crash started life as the idea for a comic book, one which was meant to have computer-generated graphics. Trying to write the sort of software he wanted for it, Stephenson found himself immersed in a new world. Even as a pre-teen, Stephenson worked with computers. So they helped shape his written visions of the future. Snow Crash takes place in a world where everything is franchised. Not just burger joints but even countries So suburban developments have split away ; and become their own nation states with their own borders." "People have set up their own ethnic and cultural tribes, with their own music, their own culture, their own customs." Stephenson's new work, The Diamond Age , takes these speculations even further. "It's not a sequel, but it concerns a future world. One in which governments are completely gone. And all you've got are tribes. And each tribe has its own individual patch of territory. They co-exist, but they maintain distinctive cultures." With the new book out in America, and about to reach Europe, Stephenson's status has increased further. He's read from Finland to France, Israel to Korea. But he remains downbeat about fame.

    Neal Stephenson's Short Stories
A while back, I realized that it was fairly difficult to actually find Neal Stephenson's stuff on the 'net. Sure, his novels are everywhere (even The Big U , since it was finally put back in print to stop the old edition from being sold for several hundred dollars a pop), but his short fiction and non-fiction is as good or better... Anyway, here they are. Enjoy.

Neal Stephenson's new book upends geek chic.
    By Paul Boutin
Updated Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at 2:52 PM PT
Neal Stephenson's 1992 novel Snow Crash set the tone for the Internet decade. Its irony-enhanced lead character, Hiro Protagonist, alternated between delivering pizza at full throttle through a lethal, sprawl-congested America, and jacking into an equally deadly virtual reality to fight villains and viruses. Sure, eight years earlier William Gibson had launched the geek-samurai genre with his landmark Neuromancer . But unlike depressing, dystopian Gibson, Stephenson turned cyberspace into a joy ride, just months before the World Wide Web took off. He made cyberspace seem like fun. Looking back on those days brings misty-eyed memories: If only the Internet had turned out as cool as Stephenson, and by extension his readers, imagined it. Stephenson's new book

Bantam Books 1992 Amazon A book review by Danny Yee Snow Crash is a fast-paced, near-future, cyberpunk thriller. Neither its technology (with cybernetic dogs, portable nuclear-powered gatling guns, and ancient Sumerian neuro-linguistic programming), its politics (a libertarian world where the Mafia deliver pizzas and the Library of Congress has merged with the Central Intelligence Agency to form a public company), or its plot (the principal characters have a superhero-like immunity to being hit when people shoot at them) withstand close inspection. It is, however, a lot of fun, and its biggest virtue is that it doesn't take itself at all seriously. 26 August 1995
