Literary Pilgrimages by Terry Ballard Mark Twain Hannibal's two most renowned citizens are immortalized in a downtown park. I've followed Mark Twain all around the world - it seems like anywhere I've been, he got there first. So far my favorite spots with Twain connections are Maui (He loved the place so much that he couldn't even write while he was there), Lake Tahoe and Paris (which he hated). I went to his boyhood home in Hannibal Missouri when I was on my way across America to take a new job in New York in 1990. The picture below may look the cerebellum of a blue whale, but it is actually a picture taken inside Tom Sawyer's cave - one of the essential visits in Hannibal. The other is his boyhood home, which was being totally refurbished at the time of my visit. After he grew up, made a name for himself and made lots of money, he built this mansion in Hartford: Here is the house at Tedworth Square in London where he was living when he spoke the famous lines "reports of my death are greatly exaggerated." That visit was strange for two reasons. First, when I was standing outside the Square, looking at the house, a woman and her son were arriving with the key - and they offered to let me inside the residents only square. That kind of treatment of strangers is rare in London. Secondly, the odd lighting in the upper right hand corner of the picture appears in all pictures of Twain houses that I took for years.

[Steinbeck as Realist/Naturalist: The Problems with Categorization] Although scholars like Warren French and Jackson Benson have quite convincingly argued the case for John Steinbeck's place in the Modernist tradition of the early twentieth century, occasionally a critic or pedagogue of the old school will still categorize Steinbeck as either a realist or a naturalist, undoubtedly due to the primary place The Grapes of Wrath holds, and likely will continue to hold, in the Steinbeck canon. Steinbeck does incorporate elements of realism and naturalism in that novel, and in much of his other work; however, this sort of criticism by the numbers glosses over the greater variety of elements Steinbeck uses and it leads to hasty conclusions about his works' artistic merit based on whether or not he observed the conventions of the predetermined category. A case in point, the following 1954 critical sketch of a categorized Steinbeck (excerpted from Donald W. Heiney's Essentials of Contemporary Literature and originally published by the Barron's Educational Series) may be over forty years old, yet it still reflects some of the critical opinion bantered about the halls of academia today.

The Migrant Workers By the late 1920s the economic effects of World War I led the United States California , believing that it was filled with abundant and fruitful land. However, once in California these farmers met animosity and hostility from the locals. They were migrant workers who became known as "Okies", even though they came from many states across the Great Plains. Their lives were lived in poverty and were depicted many times in Steinbeck's works. The story of migrant workers is often left untold because many refuse to hear it. But Steinbeck wrote about these people who were misunderstood and taken for granted in their most vulnerable time. The Grapes of Wrath follows the Joab family from Oklahoma to California, in search of a new, promising life. Through the Joab family, readers are able to understand the hardships many laborers faced to stay alive. With the nation’s economy in turmoil and unfavorable weather conditions, the farming business is no longer strong in the Great Plains. Like others farmers, the Joab family is forced off their land in Oklahoma by the bank. In disbelief and fear, the Joabs and other families are advised to move to California, where "there's always some kind of crop to work in," they are told (Steinbeck The Grapes of Wrath 46). With no other choice, the Joads head west with devastating outcomes. Even before they reach California, they meet several migrant workers along the way who are heading east, unable to find work in the fields. Once the Joabs reach their destination, they suffer the same misfortune.

John Ernst Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, on February 27, 1902 of German and Irish ancestry. His father, John Steinbeck, Sr., served as the County Treasurer while his mother, Olive (Hamilton) Steinbeck, a former school teacher, fostered Steinbeck's love of reading and the written word. During summers he worked as a hired hand on nearby ranches, nourishing his impression of the California countryside and its people. After graduating from Salinas High School in 1919, Steinbeck attended Stanford University. Originally an English major, he pursued a program of independent study and his attendance was sporadic. During this time he worked periodically at various jobs and left Stanford permanently in 1925 to pursue his writing career in New York. However, he was unsuccessful in getting any of his writing published and finally returned to California. His first novel

John Steinbeck (1902-1968), born in Salinas, California, came from a family of moderate means. He worked his way through college at Stanford University but never graduated. In 1925 he went to New York, where he tried for a few years to establish himself as a free-lance writer, but he failed and returned to California. After publishing some novels and short stories, Steinbeck first became widely known with Tortilla Flat (1935), a series of humorous stories about Monterey paisanos. Steinbeck's novels can all be classified as social novels dealing with the economic problems of rural labour, but there is also a streak of worship of the soil in his books, which does not always agree with his matter-of-fact sociological approach. After the rough and earthy humour of Tortilla Flat, he moved on to more serious fiction, often aggressive in its social criticism, to In Dubious Battle (1936), which deals with the strikes of the migratory fruit pickers on California plantations. This was followed by Of Mice and Men (1937), the story of the imbecile giant Lennie, and a series of admirable short stories collected in the volume

Steinbeck did not graduate from Stanford, but instead chose to support himself through manual labor while writing. His experiences among the working classes in California lent authenticity to his depiction of the lives of the workers who are the central characters of his most important novels. Steinbeck spent much of his life in Monterey County, which later was the setting of some of his fiction. Steinbeck's later writings were comparatively slight works of entertainment and journalism, but he did make conscientious attempts to reassert his stature as a major novelist: Burning Bright (1950), East of Eden (1952), and The Winter of Our Discontent (1961). None of these works equaled the critical reputation of his earlier novels. Steinbeck's reputation depends mostly on the naturalistic novels with proletarian themes he wrote during the Depression. It is in these works that Steinbeck is most effective in his building of rich symbolic structures and his attempts at conveying the archetypal qualities of his characters.
