If I Told Him A Completed Portrait of Picasso From 1906 on, Picasso was the great artist and the great friend in Stein's life. His portrait of her and hers of him joined his art to hers and hers to his as both were also joined in friendship. "Portraits and prayers," the phrase first used in An Elucidation , speaks of the juncture of the visual and verbal, painting and writing, Picasso and Stein. In the powerful rhythmic construction of this portrait, the repeated questions and incomplete sentences question completion and refuse to name what history teaches. In the Autobiography Stein says that she delighted that summer in the waves on the shore at Antibes, where the portrait was written, as was Geography . The waves are more than background. Inside the portrait they become Picasso's creative energy; the conquering armies of the leader, whether Napoleon or Picasso; his power over the empire of art, which might yet, like Napoleon's, crumble; and the fickle sexuality, misogyny, and flattery characteristic of Picasso. Would he like it if she told him all this? Would he like it if she told on him? Would he like what she knows about him? Such questions, with their tone of gossip and threat, flattery and secrecy, are also never answered but persistently and rhythmically repeated.

Gertrude Stein was a writer of experimental prose and one of the most original American Modernists. Gertrude Stein is a feminist writer who wrote about the inner world of women, expressing their inner feelings, wishes and desires. Gertrude Stein's women are ordinary, everyday women who live ordinary, uneventful lives. Three Lives, published in 1909, is Stein's first published work. When she sent the manuscript to her publisher, he suggested that she rewrite the English. In fact, because Stein ignored conventional grammar and syntax and lived in Europe, he surmised English to be a secondary language. Not wanting to compromise her style, she self-published the book. When the book was published, it received a few good reviews. In 1933 "Three Lives" was reprinted and presented as a "new classic," its place in American literary history secure. Although a brilliant writer who worked hard on her craft, Stein is not a writer who will please everyone. Her style is unique, she uses short simple sentences and repeats her words. Stein wrote by "ear" not by "eye" concentrating on the words she was putting on the paper. The words were designed to create an impression. Although American, Stein lived most of her life in Paris. She was a patron of the arts, Picasso, Cezanne and Matisse were personal friends. From the work of Cezanne she learned to write impressionistically rather than realistically. From Matisse she learned to focus on the individual portraits of the women she wrote about rather than emphasizing plot. From Picasso Stein learned to express herself and utilized syntactical repetition. From the impressionistic painters who were her friends and mentors she learned economy of words.

Introduction
North American Fiction and Film Literary Studies Home Page
A Black American woman's experience written by a White woman
[Stein's] early works . . . are characterised by a shift from the traditional literary devices of plot and straightforward narrative to a narrative in which plot is almost wholly eliminated and a free, experimental style is employed, embodying radical innovations in syntax and punctuation. . . . [She] describes her technique of composition as resembling that of the motion picture. The succession of frames, or pictures, in a motion-picture film, each frame of which is slightly different from the preceding one, creates the illusion of a lifelike continuity. In an analogous manner, through the technique of partially repetitive statements, each serving to advance the story a step further, Stein attempted to project a continuous sequence of images which produce in the reader the illusion of the living present immediately experienced. (8237-8238) This description is very apposite in regard to "Melanctha." You will probably note after reading only a few pages the rather childlike style with its frequent repetition. The issue immediately raised here is, of course, that if this style is meant to present "the illusion of the living present immediately experienced," whose living experience are we talking about?
