Gertrude Stein
Gertrude Stein (February 3, 1874 - July 29, 1946) - portrait by Picasso (1906) - was an American writer, poet, feminist, playwright, and catalyst in the development of modern art and literature, who spent most of her life in France. Born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania (now the North Side of Pittsburgh), her family moved to Vienna and then Paris when she was three. After returning almost two years later, she was educated in California, graduating from Radcliffe College in 1897 followed by two years at Johns Hopkins Medical School.
She and her brother compiled one of the first collections of Cubist art. She owned early works of Pablo Picasso (who became a friend and painted her portrait), Henri Matisse Andre Derain plus other young painters. When England declared war on Germany in World War I, Stein and Toklas were visiting with Alfred North Whitehead in England. They returned to France and volunteered to drive supplies to French hospitals; they were later honored by the French government for this work. By the 1920's her salon at 27 Rue de Fleurus , with walls covered by avant-garde paintings, attracted many of the great artists and writers including Ernest Hemingway , Thornton Wilder, Sherwood Anderson and Georges Braque. She coined the term "Lost Generation" for some of these ex-patriate American writers. Extremely charming, eloquent, cheerful and overweight, indeed cheerfully overweight, she had a large circle of friends and tirelessly promoted herself. Her judgements in literature and art were highly influential.

An Incomplete Portrait of Gertrude Stein Always one of my favorite poets, Gertrude Stein's rendition of A Completed Portrait of Picasso was the highlight (for me) of the CD collection 100 Years of Poetry . It sounded to me like Gertrude Stein was rapping out an infectious groove with her incessant "Now, not Now, and Now". It wasn't long before I tried to complete a portrait, this time of Stein, and this time using a rhythmic motif based in a scale consisting of seven equal divisions of the octave. Link here for the All Stein All the Time web page... is 3:05 long and about 2.8 Megs (in mp3 format). Download now. Looking for Bill's other music? Stein, Gertrude Stein, Gertrude, James , she began premedical work at Johns Hopkins. In 1902, relinquishing her studies, she went abroad and from 1903 until her death lived chiefly in Paris. For many years her secretary and lover was Alice B. Toklas. In Paris, Stein became interested in modern art movements; she encouraged and purchased the work of many new painters, including Picasso and Matisse . During the 1920s, she was the leader of a cultural salon that included such writers as Hemingway , Sherwood Anderson , and F. Scott Fitzgerald Three Lives (completed 1905, pub. 1909), short stories in which she explored the mental processes of three women. But her most characteristic and probably most difficult narrative is The Making of Americans (completed 1911, pub. 1925). The famous

page: In addition to becomingwith Alice B. Toklashalf of an iconic lesbian couple, Gertrude Stein was an important innovator and transformer of the English language. Stein, who later delighted in teasing officials with the difficult spelling of her birthplace, was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, on February 3, 1874, the youngest child of a prosperous family of German-Jewish descent. During her childhood, Stein's family resided temporarily in Europe and later moved to Oakland, California, where she was educated both privately and in public school. Sponsor Message.
The deaths during her adolescence of her overbearing father and her self-effacing mother left Stein in the care of her older brother Michael, who became the benevolent patriarch of the family. The Harvard Years In 1893, Stein accompanied her brother Leo, with whom she was very close, to Harvard. Gertrude Stein

    Stein, Gertrude Three Lives
Genre Collection (Novellas) (279 pp.) Novella (279 pp.) Keywords African-American Experience Depression Empathy Human Worth ... Women's Health Summary This first published work of fiction by Gertrude Stein includes two stories, "The Good Anna" (71 pp.) and "The Gentle Lena" (40 pp.); and a novella, "Melanctha" (151 pp.) Each one is a psychological portrait of the named protagonist. All three are members of the lower socioeconomic stratum of the fictional town of Bridgepoint. "The Good Anna" tells the story of a German immigrant who kept house for Miss Mathilda. Anna was honest, steadfast, and loyal as the day is long, but she was also stern and difficult to deal with. Anna's special friend was Mrs. Lehntman, the romance of her life. After Miss Mathilda moved to a far country, Anna took in boarders for a living, didn't make much money, and after a while died. "The Gentle Lena" is the story of another German servant girl who married unhappily and died shortly after the birth of her fourth child.

    Stein, Gertrude
(1874-1946), writer and critic Born on February 3, 1874, in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, Gertrude Stein spent her infancy in Vienna, Austria, and Paris, France, and her girlhood in Oakland, California. She entered the Society for the Collegiate Instruction of Women (renamed Radcliffe College in 1894), where she studied psychology with the philosopher William James, and received her degree in 1898. She studied at Johns Hopkins Medical School from 1897 to 1902 and then, with her older brother Leo, moved first to London and then to Paris, where she was able to live by private means. She lived with Leo, who became an accomplished art critic, until 1912; thereafer she lived with her lifelong companion Alice B. Toklas (1877-1967). Stein's Paris home became a salon for the leading artists and writers of the period between World Wars I and II. She and her brother were among the first collectors of works by the Cubists and other experimental painters of the period, such as Pablo Picasso (who painted her portrait), Henri Matisse, and Georges Braque, several of whom became her friends. At her salon they mingled with the expatriate American writers whom she dubbed the "Lost Generation," including Sherwood Anderson and Ernest Hemingway, as well as with other visitors drawn by her literary reputation. Her literary and artistic judgments were revered, and her chance remarks could make or destroy reputations. In her own work, Stein attempted to parallel the theories of Cubism, specifically in her concentration on the illumination of the present moment and her use of slightly varied repetitions and extreme simplification and fragmentation. The best explanation of her theory of writing is found in the essay
