Frequently Asked Questions 1. John who? Steakley. John Steakley. 2. Who's that? The author of such great novels as Armor and Vampire$. This is his web page. 3. A web page? Then he must be pretty prolific. 'Fraid not. 2 novels and 4 short stories are published under his name. He's mentioned that he's written some things as a ghost writer, but we can't seem to pry that information out of him. He's also done some film work (more on that later). His novels are: Armor (1984) Vampire$ (1991) The short stories are: The Bluenose Limit (1981), printed in Amazing Science Fiction, March, 1981 Flyer (1982), printed in Amazing Science Fiction, September, 1982 The Swordsman Smada (1987), published in Friends of the Horseclans, 1987 The Swordsman's Place (1989), published in Friends of the Horseclans 2, 1989. 4. So what are these books (and stories) about? Armor is the tale of Felix, a scout fighting in a brutal war on a planet known as Banshee. While on the surface it's an action/sci-fi book like Starship Troopers (which it was inspired by), it's much, much more. It's the story of a man who simply does not want to live anymore, but has a thing inside of him (he calls it his Engine) that will not allow him to simply lay down and die. So he lives on, fighting through hopeless battle after hopeless battle with no hope of either victory or defeat. Vampire$ is the tale of a group of vampire hunters sponsored by the vatican. They employ methods that everyone who's ever watched a vampire movie has thought of: harpooning vampires and using a winch to pull them into the sunlight; demolishing their lairs and using a crane to remove the debris and expose them to sunlight; automatic weapons with silver bullets, etc. In this one, Felix is a gunman who joins the crew after a group of vampires learns of its existence and turns the tables, hunting the hunters. Again, like in Armor, Felix is thrust into a situation like no human being should ever face, and must come to terms with the horror that surrounds him, and do what no one else is willing to do.

Contributions Contribute to running this site? Why would I want to do that? 1) John Steakley does not run this site. He knows of it, approves of it, and sometimes cooperates with us on it, but does not pay for it. 2) For six years now, this has been the only place on the internet where people can find out about John. John's books are not particulary numerous, but they ARE emotional, and have a profound effect on people. A lot of people who read them want to know more. Who is this guy? What else has he written? This is the only place, practically in the world, where you can find answers to such questions. 3) John's novels have never been out of print. His short stories, however, are. You could, if you liked, try to find all 4 of them in used bookstores. Good luck. It took me 3 years to do it. Alternately, you can get them through us. For 6 years, with John's permission, we provided photocopies to anyone who wanted one. With the new site, John has been gracious enough to allow .pdf versions to be posted directly to the internet. When I was charging $6 a set for photocopies, I got 3 or 4 requests a month. Those same $6 three times a month, given as contributions, now that I don't have to pay for postage, would be enough to finance the site. 4) This place is a community. A place for John's fans to gather.

John Steakley : Armor
I first ran into this book on a coffee table at a friends house 15 years ago... got into the first chapter or so and had to leave it behind (he was still reading it). He loaned it to a different friend who loaned.. Loaned. Loaned it again. I spent the next 5+ weeks seeking out that book with the funny cover about the man in the armor on that desperate planet. I had to know what happened to him. I finally found it and devoured it. I became a lump on the couch for a day and a half; stopping only to eat and sleep, so engrossed was I with this masterful tale of war and survival. In the years since I have read Armor, I have not stopped recommending it, and I do so again here.
"Armor" is a glimpse into the horror of war, the despair of the soldier, and the unconscious willingness of the human spirit to survive. The action is intense and believable, pulling you into the character of Felix and "The Machine". Time and time again he is put in situations that mean certain death but somehow his skills allow him to survive. I was really interested in how he described his mind when it came time to fight, how the "Machine" took over and how his true personality was just an observer.
This book is a great read for any one who's ever wondered about what it would be like to be soldier in a complex web of politics in and off the battle field. It very well may be the most real portrayal of a soldier driven to battle yet written. "Armor" achieved something that few novels ever do. It put me in touch with physical sensations. I can feel the fear and dread that main character Felix and his fellows experience when they encounter the harsh planet where the enemy waits. There is also a painful sense of being woefully outnumbered and too slow to defend against the mass attack of ant-like creatures. My heart pounded. . . I felt short of breath when I read the battle scenes in this book. "Armor" is the best action-oriented science fiction I have ever read. I often find myself checking the aisles of the bookstores for a sequel.

33. Revista Gigamesh - Crítica De Libros - Vampiros, De John Steakley
Translate this page Vampiros, de john steakley. Un libro como Vampiros nunca hubiera aparecido en castellano de no mediar la intervención del director john Carpenter.
http://www.gigamesh.com/criticalibros/vampiros.html

http://www.rambles.net/steakley_vampires92.html
John Steakley,
Vampire$
(Roc, 1992)
What if vampires were real? Would you imagine their arch-nemesis to be a lone, petite woman with a collection of knives and guns, some serious emotional/sexual issues and an obsession with Nike sneakers? Or a young, superpowered girl with a tan and a gang of wacky pals? Probably not. If vampires were real, their foes would more likely resemble the team led by hard-drinking, foul-mouthed Jack Crow in John Steakley's Vampire$ . Crow leads a team of church-sponsored mercenaries who employ an impressive arsenal and expert combat training to tackle fiends who, at the peak of their strength, are nearly impossible to stop by any means. Once you accept the leap of faith necessary to embrace a world with real vampires, Steakley's book slips neatly into the realm of believability. People die. Plans fail. Warriors who fight hard and live on the edge of death will also play hard. Leaders adopt bravado when necessary, yet suffer inconsolable guilt when their people fall in the line of duty. And the public is unwilling to believe that vampires exist. The media won't report on vampire-related incidents, believing them to fall more into purview of the tabloid journalism even when entire towns bear witness to the reality of the problem.
