GEORGE STARBUCK
EDITED BY KATHRYN STARBUCK AND ELIZABETH MEESE
This final collection of poems from witty wordsmith and rhyme builder George Starbuck greatly expands his oeuvre and offers witness to the transformative power of poetry when practiced by a master. In this last original book from renowned poet George Starbuck, we see a joyous and clear-eyed deepening of his work as he knowingly approaches death. Starbuck's skill with the American language and sensitivity to the rhythms of vernacular speech, his lyric sensibility (at once erudite and irreverent), and his impish satire engaging broad social and political issues are all trademarks of his widely praised verse. So too is his technical agility, richly displayed here in multiple forms, but particularly in the formal invention he called Standard Length and Breadth Sonnets, or SLABS. Most of the poems in Visible Ink were originally published in the Atlantic Monthly, Grand Street

McQuade, Molly An Unsentimental Education Writers and Chicago . xiv, 256 p. 5_1/2 x 8_1/2 1995 Cloth $18.95 0-226-56210-7 Spring 1995 "Writers are both born and made, and their teachers share in the making of them, but in what ways?" Molly McQuade asks in An Unsentimental Education , a collection of candid interviews with twenty-one of our leading novelists and poets. Presented as first-person essays, the interviews are with contemporary writers who have studied, taught at, or cultivated other ties with the University of Chicago. The book provides an occasion for the writers to reflect on their Chicago experiences and on ideas about education in general. What education does a writer need? How can formal learning impel the writing life? What school stories or tales told out of school do Philip Roth, Hayden Carruth, Marguerite Young, George Steiner, Charles Simic, Susan Sontag, and Saul Bellow have in store and want to share. Interviews with:Saul Bellow, Paul Carroll, Hayden Carruth, Robert Coover, Leon Forrest, June Jordan, Janet Kauffman, Morris Philipson, M. L. Rosenthal, Philip Roth, Susan Fromberg Shaeffer, Charles Simic, Susan Sontag, George Starbuck, George Steiner, Richard Stern, Nathaniel Tarn, Douglas Unger, Kurt Vonnegut, and Marguerite Young.

By James P. Millard H ere Sept. 8, 1755 (Battle of Lake George) the Colonial forces under Lieut. Col. Cole checked the hitherto successful advance of Baron Dieskau and his allies, changing the British rout into ultimate victory.
Here likewise on the evening of the same day- Capt. McGinnis assisted by Capt. Folsom with 200 New York and New Hampshire men, fell upon 300 Canadians and Indians encamped near the pond for the night. After a desperate struggle the French force was almost annihilated. Over 200 bodies rolled into the pool stained the water red and gave it its name. In this conflict Rogers, the famous Ranger made his debut as a soldier. Near this spot Oct. 11, 1780 Major Christopher Carleton and his band of Regulars, Tories and Indians, defeated with great loss, Captain John Sill and an American detachment from Fort George forcing the surrender of that station.

Cool Clubs
Rochester is full of cheesy sports bars and yuppie meat markets. Here's a few places if you're not into that scene. Note that the downtown (Liberty Pole) clubs change name and decor far more often than I can track.
  • The Bugjar , Monroe and Union.
Hip decor (don't miss the living room on the ceiling of the dance floor). Music can be loud but fun, leaning towards techno/rave and lots of dancing. Good choice of beers. No cover before 11, then just a few bucks. 9/19/00: Under new management, but still goin' strong. Still plenty of local music. Website
  • Milestones , 70 East Ave. (325-6490, 325-5880)
Bands, from jazz to blues to local rock. Serves meals and snacks. Formerly Jazzberries, another Rochester landmark. 6/1/97: Evicted from the old Jazzberries place by the State government or something, they've moved a block up East Ave. to a site that was formerly a diner.
  • Richmond's , 21 Richmond Ave. (454-4612)

Henry F. Starbuck
In 1896 Starbuck moved his practice to Los Angeles. Among his church projects during this period were the Knox Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, the United Presbyterian Church in Long Beach, and the Methodist-Episcopal Church in Fresno in 1902. Shortly thereafter Starbuck moved to Oakland but continued pursuing work in the Central Valley, including a proposal for a Fresno County Almshouse in 1906. Before moving to Los Angeles in 1926, Starbuck created designs for a long list of Valley churches: the Madera Presbyterian Church (1914), the German Free Evangelical Lutheran Congregational Church (1914), the Fowler Baptist Church (1916), the Danish Lutheran Church (1917), the Powis Memorial Baptist Church (1920), the Biola Lutheran Congregational Church (1922), the Bethal African Methodist Church (1923), and the Cumberland Church (1924). He also designed Wylie Giffen's Butler Avenue residence in 1917 and the U.S. Post Office in Selma in 1923. Henry F. Starbuck died in Decoto, California, on August 21, 1935.
