William Stafford's Kansas
William Stafford's Hutchinson
One Home Mine was a midwest homeyou can keep your world.
Plain black hats rode the thoughts that made our code.
We sang hymns in the house; the roof was near God. The light bulb that hung in the pantry made a wan light,
but we could read by it the names of preserves
outside, the buffalo grass, and the wind in the night. A wildcat sprang at Grandpa on the Fourth of July
when he was cutting plum bushes for fuel,
    before Indians pulled the West over the edge of the sky. To anyone who looked at us we said, "My friend";
liking the cut of a thought, we could say "Hello."
(But plain black hats rode the thoughts that made our code.) The sun was over our town; it was like a blade. Kicking cottonwood leaves we ran toward storms. Wherever we looked the land would hold us up. Prairie Town There was a river under First and Main; the salt mines honeycombed farther down. A wealth of sun and wind ever so strong converged on that home town, long gone. At the north edge there were the sand hills.

Homeschooling is For All Kinds of Folks!
It Works: Legal, Easy, Inexpensive, Family Friendly, and FUN!
FOLC is a network of eclectic homeschooling families. Although centered in eastern Prince William County, Virginia, our members include families in Fairfax and Stafford counties, and the city of Alexandria. We use a wide spectrum of homeschooling methods, from pre-packaged curriculum to radical unschooling, and everything between, and our members hail from a wide variety of backgrounds and beliefs.
WE HOMESCHOOL BECAUSE:
We enjoy spending time with our children.
Children receive TRUE socialization, through interaction with a wide variety of individuals, not just their "peers."
Children can pursue their own interests, and learn at their own speed.
We understand that the "cookie cutter" education provided by schools can damage a child's interest in learning.
FOLC has no rules, no dues, or hierarchy. Our only "official" events are informal roundtable meetings, after which we socialize. FOLC supports the efforts of the National Home Education Network (NHEN) and the Virginia Home Education Association (VHEA)

STAFFORD, WILLIAM (ca. 1780-1840). William Stafford, one of Stephen F. Austin's qv Old Three Hundred qv qv were grown by that time, and their sisters had married Clement C. Dyer qv qv halted at Stafford's plantation. Upon resuming their march, the soldiers burned the Stafford residence and the gin houses. In October 1836 Stafford appointed his wife his agent and attorney in Texas and gave much of his Texas property to his four grown children. In December 1838 fifty citizens of Fort Bend County petitioned Congress to permit Stafford to return home and be exempt from judicial prosecution on the grounds that Moore, the man he had killed, had been "destitute of character" and was "much addicted to brawls." Stafford, the petitioners argued, was ordinarily a peace-loving and enterprising citizen and had killed Moore only after much provocation. On December 27, 1838, the House recommended executive clemency. Stafford returned to live at Stafford's Point until his death, sometime before September 25, 1840, when Clement Dyer was appointed administrator of his estate. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Eugene C. Barker, ed.

Stafford, William Edgar
Born in Hutchinson, Kansas on January 17, 1914, William Edgar Stafford grew up with parents who listened to their children’s ideas. They also loved to read, and would "luxuriate in stories." In terms of literary influences, Stafford consistently claimed his mother to be most significant. His father’s generosity comes through in a story William told of being on a walk with him and seeing a hawk land in a cottonwood across a field. When they approached the tree, his father said, "Bill, maybe your eyes are better than mine. Maybe you will be the one to see the hawk." By such moves his father brought him right alongside him, even as a "partner."
Dylan Thomas
, and John Berryman. Jarrell’s work was described as the "poetry of desperation," Thomas’s chronic alcoholism brought about his early death, and Berryman threw himself from a bridge. Not to make light of the very real pain these men experienced, but the contrast to Stafford’s life is stark. At some point he left the "steady" Kansas land and went into the world. Yet within that new vulnerability he drew on his past to make a kind of shelter in the storm. His art is anything but ignorant of the aggression and menacing nature of the 1940's.
In the way he describes his writing time in an interview with Nancy Bunge, he reveals something more of his shelter. "It’s a confirming, satisfying activity to do. And it’s almost devotional. Maybe that’s too strong, but it’s as if a day of my life deserves a little attention from life. It’s my kind of attention to stop long enough, to let the evaluative, the speculative, the exploratory impulses that are native to that portion of my time be manifest in a sustained way so that I can recognize them and get sustenance from them."

A
home inspection is a wise, valuable investment that provides assurance regarding the condition of the real estate property you are purchasing or selling. The home inspector may identify improperly functioning systems, damaged building components, safety issues, as well as highlight upgrades and quality building features. If certain conditions are discovered, the home inspector may recommend further evaluation. A home inspection is an impartial, thorough, in-depth visual evaluation of the physical structure and operating components. The home inspection is not a warranty or insurance program. Y ou are encouraged to accompany the home inspector during the inspection. The home inspector will show you important features of the real estate property and its systems.
