ENGLISH 2330 AMERICAN LITERATURE TO 1865 : THE SELF IN SOCIETY Mary McCartin Wearn mwearn@arches.uga.edu Texts: The Norton Anthology of American Literature Hope Leslie (Sedgwick) Letters From an American Farmer (Crevecoeur) Approach to the Course: Although we are using an anthology in the class, we will often be reading complete works rather than abridged selections. As such, we will be dealing with fewer works but in greater depth than other survey classes. We will take a thematic approach to our collection of texts, focusing on one of the most fundamental concerns in American literature: the role of the self in society. As a country whose early history moves from religious separatism, to theocratic government, and most dramatically to democratic revolution, America has always struggled with the precarious balance between the needs of the individual and the requirements of the society as a whole. While approaching our texts from this thematic perspective, we will also discuss cultural contexts as well as important periods, genres, and styles of American literature prior to the Civil War. The texts here chosen cannot, by themselves, represent the rich and diverse literary production in America before 1865. Instead, individual works have been selected because they are important in American literary history, because they are representative of particular periods, genres, or styles, and because they address, in some unique way, the often painfully divided needs of the individual and the community.

Michael P. Branch summa cum laude from William and Mary and spent his first summer backpacking and snow climbing in the West before becoming a graduate student in English at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in the autumn of that year. Over the next seven years he lived in various rural Appalachian communities near Charlottesville, devoting himself to literary studies and to gardening, hiking, zymurgy, splitting firewood, mucking out horse stalls, skinny dipping, acquiring a southern accent (since repressed), and traveling around the country to ultimate tournaments. He completed his M.A. magna cum laude in 1987 (emphasis upon nineteenth-century American literature and natural science) and his Ph.D. magna cum laude in 1993 (dissertation entitled "The Enlightened Naturalist: Ecological Romanticism in American Literature"). Contributing Editor: Doreen Alvarez Saar Classroom Issues and Strategies Letters is a very accessible text; the greatest difficulty in teaching it is establishing the cultural contextthe political rhetoric of the Revolutionwhich makes structural sense of the whole. Generally, students read the text as the simple story of a farmer and as "truth" rather than as fiction. The teaching challenge is to get students to see how political ideas structure the text. One way into the text is to have the students read Letter II and count the references, both direct and indirect, to the way society should be organized. In the opening section of the letter, James compares his situation to the state of other farmers in other nations. Later in Letter II, note how the supposedly neutral descriptions of animals are used to talk about the conduct of humans in society. Students are generally intrigued by the idea that members of the colonies were actually against the Revolution.
