WRITTEN FOR THE INFORMATION OF A FRIEND IN ENGLAND, BY J. HECTOR ST. JOHN, A FARMER IN PENNSYLVANIA ADVERTISEMENT. [To the first edition, 1782.] The following Letters are the genuine production of the American Farmer whose name they bear. They were privately written to gratify the curiosity of a friend; and are made public, because they contain much authentic information, little known on this side the Atlantic: they cannot therefore fail of being highly interesting to the people of England, at a time when everybody's attention is directed toward the affairs of America. Should our Farmer's letters be found to afford matter of useful entertainment to an intelligent and candid publick, a second volume, equally interesting with those now published, may soon be expected. Dedication to the Abbe Raynal, F.R.S. auspices of your name. Let the sincerity of the motives which urge me, prevent you from thinking that this well meant address contains aught but the purest tribute of reverence and affection. There is, no doubt, a secret communion among good men throughout the world; a mental affinity connecting them by a similitude of sentiments: then why, though an American, should not I be permitted to share in that extensive intellectual consanguinity? Yes, I do: and though the name of a man who possesses neither titles nor places, who never rose above the humble rank of farmer, may appear insignificant; yet, as the sentiments I have expressed, are also the eccho of those of my countrymen; on their behalf, as well as on my own, give me leave to subscribe myself

Displaying the Sea and Defining America
Early Exhibitions at the Salem East India Marine Society
ISSN: 1469-1957 Journal Issue : May 2002 Daniel Finamore
Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts U.S.A.
    Introduction
Today, a great deal is known about the early commercial voyages made from Salem, Massachusetts, that integrated the American economy with those of such far-flung lands as India, East Africa, China, the Northwest coast of America, Hawaii, Fiji and myriad other Pacific islands. The economic impact of these voyages on the nascent American economy was clearly recognized by members of Salem’s maritime community. The establishment of contacts with markets in the Pacific and Indian Oceans immediately following the American Revolution helped rescue the national economy from a severe financial depression. By 1796 Salem was the sixth largest city in the nation, with a population of 10,000 and income from its custom house representing 5% of government revenues. The cultural opportunities these voyages afforded citizens of the young republic were not lost on them either, especially in establishing an independent and unified national identity. Most of them had been born under the British crown, members of the community of civilized nations. Not only their identity, but also their character, came into question and was discussed openly in such venues as the Salem Gazette, which reported that 'The late English papers represent the people of America as mere brutes and savages, and portray our merchants and traders as destitute of principle, honour, and common honesty.’

Thomas Jefferson Papers: About the Digital Collection
    Notes about the Original Collections
In 1829, under the supervision of Thomas Jefferson Randolph, Thomas Jefferson's grandson, the federal government acquired the Virginia Records, bound volumes of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century manuscripts. In 1848, the remainder of the Jefferson Papers was sold to the federal government with the understanding that Jefferson's private papers would eventually be separated out and returned to his grandson. This was accomplished in 1870-71. It should be noted that since 1829, numerous documentary editions have been published, from Thomas Jefferson Randolph's four-volume The Memoirs, Correspondence and Private Papers of Thomas Jefferson to the current edition of The Papers of Thomas Jefferson from Princeton University. LETTER X.
OF SNAKES, AND ON THE HUMMING BIRD.
WHY would you prescribe this task; you know that what we take up ourselves seems always lighter than what is imposed on us by others. You insist on my saying something about our snakes; and in relating what I know concerning them, were it not for two singularities, the one of which I saw, and the other I received from an eye-witness, I should have but very little to observe. The southern provinces are the countries where nature has formed the greatest variety of alligators, snakes, serpents; and scorpions, from the smallest size, up to the pine barren , the largest species known here. We have but two, whose stings are mortal, which deserve to be mentioned; as for the black one, it is remarkable for nothing but its industry, agility, beauty, and the art of inticing birds by the power of its eyes. I admire it much, and never kill it, though its formidable length and appearance often get the better of the philosophy of some people, particularly of Europeans. The most dangerous one is the pilot

    LANDS OF OPPORTUNITY
    THE THIRTEEN COLONIES
The British, French, Spanish, and Swedish explorers who traveled through the wilderness of the east coast of the New World, documented their discoveries and adventures for a European public anxious to hear about the exotic lands. Combining science and adventure, these books became the earliest histories of America. From the early colonial period, the settlers sent back reports of their progress, stressing the opportunities for freedom and prosperity in the new lands. By the beginning of the Republic, state histories could document a hundred years of progress.
