Keith David
KEITH DAVID has done two films with John Carpenter; The Thing and They Live
Othello

David continued to perform in regional theatre and made his first Broadway appearance in The Lady From Dubuque . Roles in A Map of the World The Thing was his film debut.
Since then, he has achieved distinction for his portrayal of the tough, compassionate ghetto draftee in Platoon and has had roles in Missing in Action, Saigon, Hot Pursuit and in numerous theatrical productions. In addition, David appeared in the television special, Roots: The Next Generation
Keith David on They Live The Thing
They Live
"The ‘working homeless’ issue is very important to us today," emphasizes David in his deeply resonant voice. "The unspoken ritual of manhood in our society requires a home, requires a man to provide shelter for his family. If he can’t do that then he’s considered a failure, and how can he overcome that perception to take care of himself and the people who need him?"
David quickly agrees that he was drawn to the socio-political overtones on They Live , but says his main incentive to do the picture was John Carpenter himself, for whom David did his first film role in The Thing
"I loved working with John; he shows a lot of respect and appreciation for his actors and helps them grow. In this case, I was also attracted to working with Roddy Piper, who has been a real pleasure to know. This film has been a very satisfying experience, both artistically and ethically."

146. A Refutation Of Anti-Perfectionist Or 'Neutralist’ Liberalism
david Thunder argues that the concept of 'value' neutrality espoused by leading liberals including john Rawls, Charles Larmore and Ronald Dworkin, is untenable.
http://www.nd.edu/~dthunder/Articles/Article1.html
A Refutation of Anti-Perfectionist or ‘Neutralist’ Liberalism by David Thunder th November 1999 Back to articles Return to homepage A Refutation of Anti-Perfectionist or ‘Neutralist’ Liberalism B oth advocates and opponents of the political ideal of ‘value’ neutrality, or neutrality between conceptions of the good, will agree upon one thing: the neutralist or ‘anti-perfectionist’ view of the moral limitations of laws and state interventions has exerted a tremendous influence upon the course of debate within political philosophy in the latter quarter of this century. The ideal of neutrality, though undermined in certain respects by communitarian and perfectionist critiques, is far from dead, and continues to shape the contemporary perfectionist/anti-perfectionist debate engaged in by many political theorists, including Joseph Raz, John Finnis, William Galston (on the ‘perfectionist’ side), Charles Larmore, John Rawls, and Ronald Dworkin (generally associated with the ‘anti-perfectionist’ side) to name but a few. In this essay, I will argue that neutralist theorists both violate their own neutrality injunction, and propose an ideal that, because of basic exigencies of political theory and practice, is impossible to implement. The neutrality which I am attributing to the most dominant thread of contemporary liberalism, and argued for by such thinkers as John Rawls, Robert Nozick, Ronald Dworkin, Bruce Ackerman and Charles Larmore, has come to be known as neutrality between ‘conceptions of the good’. Henceforth, I will refer to this form of neutrality as ‘liberal neutrality’. Neutrality is not a free-standing, self-sufficient principle of political morality, but a principle designed to secure certain political goods. In other words, it is an instrumental rather than intrinsic political good. We are not ‘neutral’ among conceptions of the good simply for the sake of being ‘neutral’, but because this (it is argued) is the best, or only way, to secure certain fundamental political values. In other words, neutrality is a second-order rather than first-order value.

http://www.io.com/~rgilson/AOTA.htm
Currently the APA is on hiatus due to my new job and move to a different city. I'm not sure when or if it will be restarted. Sorry. So you're asking yourself, "So what's this whole APA thing about anyhow?" APA's have a long a unusual history. Long before the internet people would join APA's for several reasons. It was usually because they had a common interest in something and a willingness to write about it. While basically a fanzine, there are some differences. The best comparison I can make is to liken an APA to a discussion forum, in print. X number of people join , and send in whatever they have to talk about or wish comments on for that issue. Then, the Central Mailer (me in this case) collects all of the submissions, collates it all together, and mails everyone a complete issue. As an example: a new APA is forming, Tarn Rider , devoted to Gor . After finding ten people (the CM decides to limit it to ten members) willing to admit that they actually enjoy the Gor novels, he sets some rules (like how often issues will come out, etc.). Each of the ten people send in their material

Suite 201 166 Forbes Road Braintree, MA 02184 ABOUT... SERVICES LINKS Archives Friday, May 28, 2004 John Allen writes in today's Word from Rome On May 27, Cardinal Bernard Law, the former archbishop of Boston who resigned over his handling of sex abuse allegations, was named Archpriest of the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. The nomination means that Law, 72, will now reside and work in Rome. I reported that such a move was under consideration in "The Word from Rome" on Feb. 13. Each of the four major partriarchal basilicas in Rome has a cardinal-archpriest who is the administrator of the facility. Typically it is a quasi-honorary post given at the end of someone's career. In Law's case, the dynamics were different.
