Maps of Minnesota: Stalking John Sladek
Another Dave Langford article, on editing that John Sladek collection for Big Engine How very little does the amateur, dwelling in home at ease, comprehend the labours and perils of the author, and, when he smilingly skims the surface of a work of fiction, how little does he consider the hours of toil, consultation of authorities, researches in the Bodleian, correspondence with learned and illegible Germans in one word, the vast scaffolding that was first built up and then knocked down, to while away an hour for him in a railway train! (Robert Louis Stevenson and Lloyd Osbourne, The Wrong Box Quite so. I had no intention at all of plunging into the mighty research effort of assembling a book of someone else's fiction, but somehow one thing led to another. It was a terrible shock when that fine writer John Sladek died in March 2000, aged only 62. He'd been keeping his illness (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis) secret from all but his family and closest friends. As Tom Disch put it, "he just sighed away his life", a few days after being told he had no chance of being listed for a lung transplant. Here's part of what I wrote in my next Interzone column: From his hilarious 1968 debut novel The Reproductive System (US Mechasm ) to the much darker comedy of Bugs in 1989, he exploited sf themes of robots and consciousness to mirror human folly with devastating wit. "Literary" influences like William Gaddis and Joseph Heller were absorbed into the Sladekian narrative madness, replete with wordplay, anagrams, palindromes, ciphers, obsessive narrative patterns and mathematical games. He skewered irrational beliefs and pseudoscience in his nonfictional

I was flattered to be among a distinguished group of contributors, including Alan Ryan, Arthur Koestler, David Bohm, Raymond Williams and John Maynard Smith. As my title implies, I did not agree with the terms of reference of the series, and my contribution was published in a separate section entitled 'Criticism'. 'Critique' would have been more accurate, since I was challenging the terms of reference of the series, as I spell out in my essay. This approach has been followed through in all my subsequent writings. It was published in J. Benthall, ed., The Limits of Human Nature (Allen Lane, 1973), pp. 235-74. Download View Online

Check out website: www.bigengine.co.uk M aps' is a collection of short stories and word games by the late John Sladek, edited by David Langford.
Unless you are a keen devotee of wordplay and word games, some brief elements of this book could be deeply annoying, which is unfortunate because the parts that make sense are worth the effort, where effort is required.
Here are some examples, beginning with the opening stories:-
'Bill Gets Hep to God!' This two and a half pages of atheistic anarchic is enough to seriously irritate any Jesus freak.
In a couple of stories, Thackery Phin wends his way, more Agatha Christie-like than Marlow, through the unfathomable Brit subculture much beloved and misunderstood by American tourists.
Peabody, a disreputable genealogist, takes delivery of a time machine and sets about fixing the fraudulent claims made to his clients in the only way open to him.

Designing graphics for television is what I do during daylight hours here in London. But television provides very specific challenges (and, of course, opportunities) for setting type. Designers are increasingly working across multiple media, and those coming from a print background especially may have a culture shock and need to learn some new rules. Hopefully, the following will help!
History explains all
Firstly, lets look at the technology, its history, and its inherent problems - feel free to skip this part if your eyes start glazing over by all means, but it relates directly to the advice given later, and gives the context of why the advice works.
Television is actually a pretty old technology, and many of the issues I deal with daily are as a result of that fact. The basic standards are PAL, NTSC and SECAM. SECAM was developed by the French in a political decision to protect its manufacturing base. Interestingly, many eastern block countries adopted SECAM for political motives - NTSC is an American system, and PAL was an improved derivative of it. What better way to delay cultural imperialism than using an incompatible television system? :) For our purposes, if you are designing for SECAM, treat it as PAL.
Why the different standards? Well, its all originally to do with electricity supplies - in most cases, you'll find NTSC used in countries with a 60Hz power supply, and PAL in those with a 50Hz power supply. It made things easier for the electrical engineers in a time when analogue was king - the power supply frequency was basically used as a clock, allowing the engineers to time when the next frame of video should be displayed.

135. Broken Spider's Trading Page
A CDR trading webpage trading david Bowie, Radiohead, Iggy Pop, Roger Waters, Elton john Billy Joel, plus others.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/brokenspider/
Sorry, but I am not currently accepting new trades. Check back later if you'd like. Welcome to my CDr trading page. I'm interested in mostly David Bowie shows and also Radiohead shows. I like a lot of different music though, including The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Nine Inch Nails, The Pixies, Bjork, Modest Mouse, Weezer, The Smashing Pumpkins, Elton John, Billy Joel, and others, so don't hesitate to make me an offer.
- If you initiate the trade, you have to send first (unless we've traded before).
- Either listen to the disc before you send, or be prepared to replace any discs with errors that aren't on the original; I will do the same.
- Please no MP3 source or discs not recorded with DAO, I DON'T WANT THEM! From now on, if I recieve a disc that has blips between the tracks, or has crackling static noises that aren't supposed to be there, you will not get discs in return for them. I don't have enough time or money to continue to make trades for discs I can't put on my list. If you aren't sure, ask first; it's your responsiblitly to tell me, I will assume that if it's on your list, it doesn't have errors.
- Do not send me discs with perceptible sounds in between the tracks. Just because there aren't 2 second gaps, it does not mean it's DAO, or wasn't recorded without DAO at one point.

My interview with John Sykes was more of a chat session! It was pretty laid back and I have basically run through his career, of which I am a big fan.
There is a few interesting moments, especially when David Coverdale is discussed.
Before you get into it a few updates from a brief chat with John last week.
The album will indeed still have some elements of hip-hop, but not on every track and it will not be a George Lynch. I told John about that album and that is not what he is doing. It will mix elements of the classic Sykes sound with the new.
Also out is the chance of doing any work with David Lee Roth (discussed below). John Kalodner was putting something together but is now unwilling to involve David further after the two met just a couple of weeks ago.
That's about the update, besides the new album will be out in September-(ish) - now enjoy the interview!
John! So how's things?
Good, going very well
Excellent. You've got a new record just about in the can? Well I'm working on it, I'm about two thirds of the way through it currently. You know just trying to get it polished and hopefully it'll be out by the end of summer.
