101. Darwinism And The Division Of Labour
The founding conference of the British Society for the Social Responsibility in Science in November 1970, was on the theme, 'The Social Impact of Modern Biology'. The conference was attended by a number of eminent scientists, e.g., Nobel Laureates James Watson, Jaques Monod, Maurice Wilkins; david Bohm, Jacob Bronowski, R.G. Edwards (of Steptoe Edwards, the pioneers of 'testtube babies'), as well as some radicals, Hilary Steven Rose, john Beckwith. It was, perhaps, the last moment when radicals and posh scientists were relatively united. The talk was published in The Listener, 17 August 1972, pp. 202-5 and in Science as Culture no. 9 110-24, 1990.

Just like it says. I have all my stuff ready to go for tomorrow. Oh sorry, I'm going to a retreat this weekend. It's in Lousiana. I think it'll be a lot of fun. In other words, I'll be gone all weekend.
I've still been practicing soccer. We try to go at least three or four times a week. And I found a group of guys to play with too. They are all Mexicans and all really good. I fit in, but since I don't speak Spanish it's hard to communicate. Nobody really cares out on the field though.

John Anderson Lecture Notes and Other Writings
Introduction by David Armstrong
Anderson was the most important philosopher who has worked in Australia. A great educator, he was a profound influence on the intellectual formation of those who were his pupils. These included, but were far from being exhausted by, a number of students who went on to become philosophers themselves. An interesting biography of Anderson which, however, is more concerned to give a portrait of the man and his activities rather than consider the detail of his philosophical views, is A Passion to Oppose by the historian Brian Kennedy (Melbourne University Press, 1995). It contains a very full bibliography. Anderson never wrote the books that he hoped to write, and of the material he published in his life-time only the collection Studies in Empirical Philosophy (Angus and Robertson, Sydney, 1962) is easily available. But many of those who have heard of the profound intellectual indebtedness to Anderson that so many of his students have expressed, and have wished to follow the matter up, have found these papers heavy going. Some have even been led to wonder what the fuss was all about. To such people, one has in the past been able to recommend two excellent books by A.J. Baker:

112. John McEuen On The Road

Partners, Brothers, Friends and Parents
A Musician Wrestles with Road Realities
by David Gans January 1986 John McEuen, the good-natured multi-stringsman of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, was in the bar of the Oakland Holiday Inn a few minutes before last call, chatting with a couple of visitors. He mentioned being hungry, and when a man that thin says he wants to eat he ought to be allowed to eat. The options were slim. McEuen chose Denny's over Jack in the Box, since the latter would have neither bran muffins nor raisin bran. McEuen excused himself to stash his banjo and garment bag in his room. Some minutes later, the bar closed and we moved to the lobby. McEuen arrived after another moderately lengthy interval, decidedly less talkative and looking considerably more tired than he had a few minutes before. We headed for Denny's, three uneasy people trying to make small talk and killing time with largely unsuccessful jokes about the menu. Half an hour later, still not served and still not served and still not served though our menus had been folded in front of us for some time the hostess seated another party at the table next to ours and turned away from us without so much as a "be right with you." We left. Jack in the Box still not a valid option, McEuen suggested a 24-hour market we'd passed on the way. At least they'd have fruit juice and cereal. He picked up a few things and we headed back to the Holiday Inn, somewhat more relaxed by our shared ordeal.

John Osborne
A lifelong satirist of prigs and puritans
by David Hare
Reprinted from his speech at the memorial service for John Osborne in June 1995
I've an idea. Why don't we have a little game? Let's pretend that we're human beings and that we're actually alive. Just for a while. What do you say? Let's pretend we're human.' It took the author's sudden death last Christmas and his burial in a Shropshire churchyard, just a few miles from the blissful house he shared with his beloved Helen, to wake his own country into some kind of just appreciation of what they had lost. It is impossible to speak of John without using the word 'England'. He had, in some sense, made the word his own. Yet it is no secret that latterly John had imagined the local eclipse of fashion that is inevitable in his profession to be sharper and more hurtful than ever before. However, in the flood of heartfelt and often guilty appreciation which followed on his death, he would have been astonished to see publicly acknowledged what he most surely knew all along: that the world is full of people who feel strangely rebuked by those who dare to live far freer, more fearless, even more reckless lives than the ones we are able to lead ourselves. Of all human freedoms the most contentious is the freedom not to fear what people will think of you. It still shocks people when you claim the right to hate with the same openness with which you love. But even the stage carpenter at the Theatre Royal, Brighton, who liked regularly to greet the visit of each of John's plays with the words 'Oh, blimey, not you again', would have admitted that the man who wrote 'Don't be afraid of being emotional. You won't die of it' had all along been possessed of an enviable courage.

114. The John McPhee Reader
Book review by david P. Stern.
http://www.phy6.org/outreach/books/McPhee.htm
A Sampler of America
The John McPhee Reader edited by William L. Howarth
Farrar, Strauss Giroux 1976. .... reviewed 16 May 1995 by David P. Stern
Most readers have a favorite author, and mine is probably John McPhee. A writer of non-fiction, he takes delight in exploring unconventional aspects of our society, presented through colorful individuals and described in crisp and scintillating language. This book is a sampler, containing excerpts from a dozen books, an admirable introduction for anyone new to McPhee's style. Collections like this are often disjointed and fragmentary, but not here: each section stands on its own, each is a minor masterpiece, each tells a story, and the editor's introductory analysis of McPhee's style is masterful in its own way. First published in 1976, it is still in print, like other books by McPhee. He wrote many more after thatabout Alaska, about the geology of the western US (three books, a bit heavy with geology jargon), about an ocean trip with the US merchant marine, also stories about bears in New Jersey, about attempts to contain the mighty Mississippi and lava flows on Iceland, and so forth, up to his recent "Ransom of Russian Art," his twenty-third. As the above list shows, McPhee's interests are rather wide-ranging. The books excerpted here touch on canoeing in Maine, on travels through the sparsely populated (yes!) center of New Jersey, and on dreamers or visionaries (pick your choice) who plan trips to the stars by controlled atomic explosions, and others who fly a craft that is a hybrid between an airplane and an airship.

115. David Bowie In The Elephant Man
Pictures and facts from the 1980 play, which featured david Bowie as john Merrick.
http://www.up-to-date.com/bowie/elephantman/
David Bowie in
The Elephant Man
David Bowie, musician, actor, and artist starred in the play, The Elephant Man, from July 29, 1980 to January 3, 1981. The play was performed in Denver, Chicago, and New York. Bowie's performance in The Elephant Man was between movie performances in Just a Gigolo and Christine F. During this time period, Bowie had recently divorced his first wife, Angela; his 14th album, Scary Monsters ... and Super Creeps was just released; and his good friend, John Lennon, (coauthor, along with Carlos Alomar, of Bowie's hit song, Fame ), was assassinated (December 8, 1980). While Bowie had many career paths in motion during these years, many people felt that Bowie's performance in The Elephant Man established him as a true actor. I was fortunate enough to see the play four times at the Blackstone Theatre in Chicago. I sat in the 2nd row during two performances. I was able to sneak in a camera while I sat in the balcony during one performance—Bowie's last in Chicago. I snapped pictures immediately after Bowie would make a humorous statement so that the laughter from the audience masked the sound of the camera's shutter. Since this was the fourth time I saw the play, I knew almost every line by heart. Later I learned that there were very few photographs of Bowie's actual performance in The Elephant Man in circulation. I have included a couple of my photographs on this web site.
