Home Kathryn Humphries was in the Dominican Republic with Project in 2002/03 and her report won the first prize in the David St John Thomas Trust competition. The year that I spent living and working in the Dominican Republic was an adventure, an unforgettable and unmatchable experience. I have been lucky enough to have taken part in a challenge that not many people will get the opportunity to be involved in. It is hard not to find this country enjoyable. The Dominican culture is infectious; the people have an energy unlike any that I have ever seen and as the lively rhythms of merengue and bachata surround you, you simply can't help being swept along with it all. Welcome to the Caribbean. My home for the year was a small village called Bombita. Here the people are a fusion of Domincan and Haitian, African and European roots, which makes it a really unique place to live. Bombita offers the opportunity to become part of a haphazard, 'what will be, will be' atmosphere and the country belongs proudly to the famous, laid-back culture of the Caribbean. By living in Bombita I discovered a place where time means very little. Bombita is a small village with a big feeling of community. It is set out in a square with one main street and lots of smaller streets winding their way aimlessly around the houses. Homes are mainly constructed of wood, often from palm trees, with thatch or corrugated iron roofs. They are often painted bright colours, creating a mosaic of pinks and blues throughout the village. It's a bustling place, especially around the several 'colmados', which are local shops with blaring music, and also around the makeshift baseball pitch and the park (still sadly lacking in plants and trees).

Home Felicity Miller was in China with Project in 2002/03 and this is her essay for the David St John Thomas Trust competition. "Footprints in Jingning" Plans to study Business and Computing evaporated as I opened the Project Trust leaflet. Photographs depicting happiness, exhilaration, excitement and friendship captivated my attention. I could feel myself there. I was the one flying through the jungle, diving into the waterfall, laughing and smiling. Me. Eighteen months later and well into my year as a teacher of English in Jingning Number 1 Middle School, one of the Gansu projects in northern China, with huge excitement, I met my father in the provincial capital, Lanzhou. The school's car travels past the dusty looking terraced mountains, while he looks at photographs. Li Ping and me at Victor's mud-courtyard house in the country. Li Ping and Xiangdong teaching me how to climb trees like a monkey. Students describing sports day and the release of hundreds of pigeons heralding the start. We arrive at the flat shared with friends where many hours pass playing cards, watching TV, singing karaoke, cooking and gossiping. It is lunchtime so we deposit my father's luggage, mostly prized western essentials such as chocolate for my students and set off to buy cucumber from the street sellers. At the foot of the flats a lady washes a mass of green leafy vegetable. The weeping willow trees shade the street from the sun. Underneath, retirees in blue, all wearing large, thick, square, brown glasses, play Chinese Chess. They twist their pointy beards, watching a friend decide his next move. A small girl sits on a three-legged stool playing, while mothers knit and wait for their study-weary children to come home. Noodle Lady, my saviour of all saviours, is busy making fresh noodles of all varieties. She turns and smiles. A little boy runs past giggling before scootering off to his grandfather, who picks him up chuckling. Egg Lady nods her head smiling, turns to her friend and exclaims, 'Baba?' I nod back, 'Yes, my Dad!'

Prodigies preceded and accompanied the event, and at his baptism at Porth Clais by St. Elvis of Munster, "whom Divine Providence brought over from Ireland at that conjuncture", a blind man was cured by the baptismal water. St. David's early education was received from St. Illtyd at Caerworgorn (Lanwit major) in Glamorganshire. Afterwards he spent ten years studying the Holy Scriptures at Witland in Carmarthenshire, under St. Paulinus, (Pawl Hen), whom he cured of blindness by the sign of the cross miraculously rose under him, that all could hear him, and so eloquently that all the heretics were confounded. St. Dubric resigned the "Archbishopric of Caerleon", and St. David was appointed in his stead. One of his first acts was to hold, in the year 569, yet another synod called "Victory", against the Pelagians, of which the decrees were confirmed by the pope. With the permission of King Arthur he removed his see from Caerleon to Menevia, whence he governed the British Church for many years with great holiness and wisdom. He died a the great age of 147, on the day predicted by himself a week earlier. His body is said to have been translated to Glastonbury in the year 966. It is impossible to discover in this story how much, if any, is true. Some of it has obviously been invented for controversial purposes. The twelve monasteries, the temptation by the women, the attempt on his life, all suggest an imitation of the life of St. Benedict. Wilder legends, such as the Journey on the Sea-Monster, are commonplaces of Celtic hagiography. Doubtless Rhygyfarch and his imitators collected many floating local traditions, but how much of these had any historical foundation and how much was sheer imagination is no longer possible to decide.
