Lavender Disaster
By David St. John
Posted Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997, at 12:30 AM PT
It was in the old days in Atlantic City
Of even the most desolate stragglers I pulled my ultra-cool thrift store fedora
Like a fortune teller's bazaar its ancient bricks Covered in narrow stripes of orange and lavender As if it were a gypsy's rippling tent The old woman inside said softly to me the words Come try To face her across the small round table Where she sat shuffling a bent pack of Tarot cards Sit down She quietly rocked a little in her chair Then she told me the story of the future I might hold As softly lavender as an electric summer sunset Down at the beach with maybe Stella or even Renata As she said You will sit in the throne of Heaven Well that's really nice I thought But I couldn't open my eyelids for a second Scent remained of my grandmother's lavender sachet Then got out before she told me something else I didn't want to know but I was worse than chilly now The night was coming down so black along the streets I just knew I couldn't go on to work that night How Stella would be pissed I'd spent that five spot On the gypsy not to mention I'd be back Early with no money from the shift I couldn't do But maybe we'd go out to the movies We hadn't done that since I'd been made a night clerk That would make her happy I thought the movies

THE FEDERAL CAPITAL C. st. john david, MSE, Eng. Launceston, Tasmania, The Examiner February 2, 1901 The text that follows appeared

THE FEDERAL CAPITAL C. St. John David, M.S.E., Eng. Launceston, Tasmania, The Examiner February 2, 1901 At a time when so many places in the parent state are bidding for the honour of being selected as the home of the future Federal Government, it might be well to point out that possibly neither of these towns possesses all the qualifications which are desirable, if not necessary, in a city which should be a model in every respect. Most of the candidates owe their existence to local circumstances; either they are centres of farming districts, termini or junctions of railways, or primarily they were located so that a supply of fresh water was available for the early settlers. None of them were laid out with the view of any great extension, and all of them are largely in the hands of private owners. Now, does the ordinary method of laying out a city in rectangles (such as were Melbourne and Adelaide) satisfy all requirements? In such case the principal buildings are generally scattered about without any regard to relative positions, sufficient land not being taken in the first instance. Is there a better method? There are many points to recommend the adoption of this "radial" plan; distances from any one point to another, save straight along a street, are less than in the rectangular plan; all main streets radiate from the principal buildings, which are thereby equally accessible from all parts; plenty of open spaces can be provided, and all aspects may be obtained.

    ST JOHN'S LOCK
    Cold water effuses; sluices
    from another level
wells inwards as a translucent rush,
    it surges upwards, beats, bubbles,
    engulfs a chamber
    of mortar, bricks, wood, rust.
    Effortlessly
    motor launches and moored cruisers
    are borne aloft,
they wallow creating ripples as hydraulic forces force the issue; nothing spectacular just a small occurrence to confuse the senses of those who dream of higher levels. Humans are spared the violence of the undertow at the riverbed and sluice entrance, a maelstrom where sediment flows as viscous sludge, a cloudy dredge where trout, perch, roach and rudd endure the pull of the rising flood, to cautiously touch and taste nutrients through various sensory protrusions, they imbibe things dead and alive parts of par, roe and ruff and suspended plant detritus, particulate matter the disturbance whirls in vortex rings; only the occasional gleam from a fish scale denotes the underwater gale; then liquid becomes clear, calm and still

David Hickey, St. John's, Title: God Makes Fruit meanwhile it screws-up with pumpkin — all the manglings of fruit and a sorry name to boot but forgives itself this bungling for the bounty that it’s bundling in the wild-eyed abundance of a bunch of a profusion of its grapes foil for the fascist apple orange is a lesson like the red wheelbarrow is sturdy is en — behold! this banana! sans early drafts and freakish prototypes we’re frightened in amazement while surely saddened too for there’s no limit to its genius with a periodic table... and these opposable thumbs... and a face upon a Warhol ... no Tyger could come close. as gods in committee dream the pomegranate so that somewhere in our pomegranate there’s this dream unfertilized... this passion, an idea, an excuse, nagging. but pear is merely work-a-day — plum a shallow peach — peach another version of the opposite of speech: all woman, all. and pineapple’s its view of hell and it abandoned it as well.
