n December 4, 1992 President George Bush announced he was sending up to 28,000 US troops to Somalia to help provide humanitarian relief in a strife-torn country where hundreds of thousands of people had died of starvation. Not quite a year later, shortly after a failed raid that took the lives of 18 American servicemen, President Bill Clinton announced an exit strategy for the United States. In less than a year, the United States went from welcomed savior to embattled occupier. How did this happen? What went wrong? How did a mission of mercy that won almost universal acclaim for its humanitarian intentions turn into another armed intervention in a developing country?

Do the shelves have room for one more bonkers theory about how apes became human? You know the story: for millions of years we were big-brained but dull-witted hominids. Then, about 100,000 years ago, our brains were touched as if by a burning finger and we lit up with self-consciousness and creativity. We immediately started painting caves and worshipping gods, and became rational. The question is: what could have caused this abrupt change? Well, here is a suggestion to wet your socks: the first humans were schizophrenic. A small band of smart apes lived by a lakeshore in east Africa on a diet rich in fats, which allowed their brains to grow very large. Then a genetic defect in fat metabolism led to one child having faulty brain connections; the signalling became slightly variable. The result was a brain prone to schizophrenia, psychopathy and mania, but also creativity, curiosity and ambition. As David Horrobin imagines it, this child with "a divine discontent with the way things were" spawned a family of proto-Medicis, brilliant and ruthless, who slaughtered their neighbours and spread out to rule the world.

184. Teemings Issue 8 : "Psychic Parasites" By DavidB
david B. heaps scorn on psychics Sylvia Browne, john Edward, Terry and Linda Jamison, and James Van Praagh for attempting to profit off the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.

Psychic Parasites by David B As I write this, it is almost exactly two months after the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. The anger at these actions is still palpable, but it is slowly being overwhelmed in me by the anger at some fellow Americans. These Americans prey on death, prey on those who fear death, prey on those who are grieving. I am talking about the James Van Praaghs, the John Edwards, the Sylvia Brownes of the world. They make their money by selling their false visions to a public that is all-too-willing to believe. They put out best-selling books full of nonsense, have highly-rated television shows, and are supported by fawning talk-show hosts. Of these types of people, five deserve special mention here: Sylvia Browne, John Edward, Terry and Linda Jamison (the "psychic twins"), and James Van Praagh. Other than those who perpetrated this attack, I can think of nothing more heinous than the actions of these individuals and others like them. I consider them to be parasites, feeding off of the blood of the victims. I realize these are strong words. But they are well deserved, as I will explain below. Wenham goes true west
By John Mangan May 1 2002 David Wenham: career in overdrive. Picture: SEBASTIAN COSTANZO Macedonia, Molokai, Middle Earth and Barwon Heads - all have been home to David Wenham in the past few chaotic years as his acting career has kicked into overdrive. But while leper colonies, former war zones, mythical kingdoms and seaside retreats near Geelong all have their appeal, right now Wenham has Melbourne on his mind. His turn as Lee, the wild-eyed black sheep of the family in the MTC's production of Sam Shepard's True West , has not only virtually sold out but has been earning rave reviews. His meticulous preparation for roles usually involves wandering around streets and parks observing people, looking for ideas and inspiration. "Melbourne actually provides great fodder for characters," he says. "I think it's one of my all-time favourite cities. It's full of the most amazing characters, especially the city, this square mile here. And some of the characters I encounter on a day-to-day basis just walking down Swanston Street, you know, if you put them up on stage people would say you're over-acting." On the stage a ball of intense, frustrated energy, off stage by the banks of the Yarra, Wenham is calm and easy-going. He's been kept up beyond his bedtime by the noise of post-Logies revelry, but he resisted the urge to party, keeping his focus tightly on the play.

David John Harrison It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son, father, brother and friend, Dave Harrison. Dave passed away peacefully at home January 20, 2000. Dave lived in Winnipeg for his entire 41 years. Dave was employed by the CPR since 1979, initially as a Stationary Fireman, then went on to perform a variety of duties within the railroad. Left to treasure Dave's memory are mother Joan; grandmother Mary; sister Lynn; brother Peter; nieces Nicole and Larissa; and his cherished son Blake, who held the largest place in Dave's big heart. As well, Dave will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his closest friend Jeff and an entire host of family and friends. Dave was a consummate entertainer. He lived and loved to make people laugh. His keen sense of humour, coupled with his razor-sharp wit enabled Dave to keep those around him in stitches. Dave was an avid thrill-seeker. His adventurist side could never resist indulging in activities with an element of danger. Some of his fondest moments were spent bungee jumping, wheelstanding street bikes at 70 mph, etc. His enthusiasm for such activity earned Dave the nickname "Rock." Dave was a gifted musician. He possessed an extraordinary ability to express himself through his lyrics and musical arrangements.
