No Frames: Index Poetic Dictation (Michael Slosek) In 1965, Jack Spicer (1925-1965) delivered a series of lectures at the Vancouver Poetry Convention where he discussed the nature of automatic writing, and a theory known as poetic dictation. Spicer was heavily involved in the literary community of San Francisco and is also considered one of the most important postmodern poets. In the first Vancouver Lecture, Spicer describes the nature of the poet in the writing process of poetry. The poet, as Spicer describes, is a medium through which the poem is dictated from an outside source. What is most interesting from a hermeneutical stand-point is that Spicer's proposal seems to categorically revoke the conservative hermeneutical model of author's interpretation since it seems that the poet (the author) does not exert intentional control over the poem, nor does the poem originate in the poet. Spicer begins the lecture by reciting a story about William Butler Yeats who Spicer claims was the first poet to take the phenomenon of dictation seriously. (For a qualification of this claim, however, see Plato's The Ion ). Yeats and his wife Georgie, as Spicer tells, were traveling through California when Georgie was over taken by "spooks." When Yeats asked the "spooks" why they had come, they replied that they were there to give metaphors for his poetry. This story, whether historically true or false, gives the initial sense of what Spicer is proposing: a theory of "taking poetry as coming from the outside rather than from the inside." Spicer uses the term "dictated" because he recognizes that there is something outside of the poet which writes the poetry through the medium of the poet.

This is the first line in Spicer's Billy the Kid : "The radio that told me about the death of Billy the Kid." Poets, like radios, should dictate, but not mess with, what they sense from the Outside. The Outside should be respected. As he states in the first Vancouver lecture, "Given a source of energy which you can direct, you can direct yourself out of the picture." The poem should take control of the poet, and what is on the page must stay. One is not to revise nor correct, not even a typotypos are magical. As Spicer began grouping a series of his poems together, such as his The Holy Grail poems or his Book of Magazine Verse , he would forget what he had written before. He would forbid himself from rereading his previous poems before writing the next. Dictation and the serial poem situate the poet with language working shrouded from sight. And just as Orpheus was instructed not to look back upon Eurydice's face, Spicer was forbidden to look back upon the words he wrote.

The Thrill of the Chase. Or, How the Biography of Poet Jack Spicer Came to Be I began working on the life of Jack Spicer during the summer of 1990, when my friend Lewis Ellingham of San Francisco invited me to join him in his ongoing Spicer biography, which he had begun in 1982. Our book has just been published: Poet Be Like God: Jack Spicer and the San Francisco Renaissance (Wesleyan University Press/University Presses of New England, 1998). The poet Jack Spicer (1925-1965) was born in Hollywood. After two years at the University of Redlands in Southern California, he transferred to UC Berkeley in 1945, receiving a BA in English in 1947 and attending graduate school at Berkeley until 1950. His promising academic career came to an end with his refusal to sign the now infamous loyalty oath. With two young Berkeley friends, poets Robin Blaser and Robert Duncan, Spicer forged a “magical” school of poetry, which the three jokingly dubbed the “Berkeley Renaissance.” Spicer described his happy years at Berkeley as “wandering around in a vast library which contained all the secrets (and described all the pleasures) of the visible and invisible worlds.” As a T.A. (teaching assistant) to two of his English professors, Mark Schorer and Roy Harvey Pearce, Spicer did research at The Bancroft Library. Thus it seemed poetic justice when I began stalking him through the halls of Bancroft, where he had dreamed of a new post-modern writing that would give him eternal fame.

Wesleyan University Press, 486 pages, $35. By Jim Van Buskirk 'WHY would anyone want to publish a biography of Spicer?" Lawrence Ferlinghetti asked Kevin Killian in a 1990 interview. "He's almost forgotten nowadays, isn't he?" Poet Be like God: Jack Spicer and the San Francisco Renaissance is Lewis Ellingham and Kevin Killian's eloquent response to Ferlinghetti's flippant query. With the death of Allen Ginsberg drawing even more attention to the beat movement, it is appropriate that Spicer, considered one of America's finest poets, finally gets his due, even though it has taken more than 30 years since the influential iconoclast's death in 1965 for this first full-length biography to appear. In the mid-1940s Robert Duncan, Robin Blaser, and Spicer formed an uneasy triumvirate, the core of what became known as the "Berkeley Renaissance." After the phenomenal success of Allen Ginsberg's Howl in 1955, Spicer maintained that the poetic elements of Howl "his open homosexuality, his obscenity, his defiant mix of symbolist, biblical, and surrealist energies" had been the personal property of the Berkeley Renaissance. Howl's success and Spicer's bitter reaction to it characterized the remainder of Spicer's career. When the attention shifted to San Francisco, the appellation "Renaissance," accurate or not, accompanied it.
