Poet Be Like God : Jack Spicer and the San Francisco Renaissance

by Lewis Ellingham, Kevin Killian From Richard Gabriel-Rummond, THE STRANGER, July 2, 1998: "Poet Be Like God is a comprehensive and marvelously researched biography of Jack Spicer, very possibly the most provocative and least appreciated poet of his generation. Using letters and interviews with Spicer's contemporaries, the authors have documented the most intimate aspects of Spicer's lifehis family, his friends, his loversat the same time exposing many of the half-truths and myths that still surround this complex and mysterious poet. Also included are many of Spicer's poems, along with insights regarding his writing habits and creative processes." European users may wish to browse the

“Addressed to No One”:
Reading Jack Spicer’s After Lorca by Mark DuCharme Kent Johnson Dear Kent,
Why was I born among mirrors?
The day walks in circles around me,
    and the night copies me
    in all its stars.
[Selected Poems, 63] After Lorca . Mirroring: to produce a corollary, a copy, to create a “mere” photographic representation. Or . To reflect—but NECESSARILY to falsify, to corrupt; just as a mirror reverses the image of the subject/object [positions] before it. Mirror as both object and subject—playing an active role in the CREATION of the subject’s image of herself. And defacement, then, as that representation of herself which the subject violently rejects. Negation towards iconoclasm. (S. Howe: “ Eikonoklastes can be translated as ‘Image Smasher’” [ The Nonconformist’s Memorial To mirror fundamentally implicates a doubling: an “empty” image, alongside its (corporeal?) original. Clearly, Spicer’s text doubles back upon Lorca’s original, while also twisting it, provoking it. Lorca himself seems (oddly) to anticipate this direction, in the translation (by W.S. Merwin) quoted above. (The New Directions edition, edited by the poet’s brother Francisco along with Donald M. Allen of The New American Poetry fame, was originally published in 1955—two years before the White Rabbit Press publication of

Two works on translation stand out in 20th century, Walter Benjamin’s The Taskof the Translator and jack spicer’s poem essay After Lorca two islands

Translation: Contemplating Against the Grain
(A Talk on Walter Benjamin given at Stevens Institute in 1999) by Murat Nemet-Nejat I want to discuss translation, not as an auxiliary activity to literature; but as an independent genre, like the lyric or epic, with a distinct ethos and mode of thinking. I’ll conceive of translation as the anarchic poetic form of our time. Two works on translation stand out in 20th century, Walter Benjamin’s The Task of the Translator and Jack Spicer’s poem essay After Lorca : two islands separated by a dialectical ocean, each the other’s other. Either contains within itself a contradiction, two assertions apparently negating each other. Only facing up to these contradictions can the genre of translation, its power be understood. Walter Benjamin’s essay begins stating, “any translation which intends to perform a transmitting cannot transmit anything but information—hence, something inessential.” Towards its end the essay states, “A real translation is transparent.... This may be achieved, above all, by a literal rendering of the syntax which proves words rather than sentences to be the primary element of the translator. For if the sentence is the wall before the language of the original, literalness is the arcade.” How can this be? Not only does this sentence contradict the earlier one—if information is inessential, how can literalness be the primary element?—but it contradicts itself. If the sentence is the wall before the original, how can a literal rendering of syntax be the arcade? How does a sentence become—through literalness—a transparent space?

64. Jack Feeny Reviews: Radiohead
(A bunch of wankers). Once again I thank you for printing the undeniable truthabout this band. From Nicholas spicer nicholas.spicer@keynote.com . Hey.
http://www.geocities.com/jackfeeny/radiohead.htm
RADIOHEAD Radiohead are the most remarkable contemporary band there is. And, by no little coincidence, the best. They are also, almost certainly, the best British band since the Smiths. From a personal point of view it is certainly nice that there is at least one band that I grew up with that I can impress my (potential) kids with later in life. Unfortunately I didn't see them live during their infancy in an intimate venue or anything but at least I pre-empted the OK Computer bandwagon ( The Bends was the album that got me going). I would call them the best band of the nineties but it seems a little unfair given that two of their best albums have been released in the new millennium. I'll leave that particular honour to the Smashing Pumpkins. And best British band of the nineties? Let's say...Oasis, or maybe the Manic Street Preachers. Given that both went shite after 1996 or so says a lot about the nineties really. So why are Radiohead so remarkable and the only great contemporary band in existence (barring further progress from the Strokes)? Mainly because they proved to be the most artistically adventurous and forward-minded band of their generation. Quite simply, they took steps forward that absolutely no-one expected or could forsee. Furthermore they did so without disminishing the strength of their songwriting. "Genius" is a strong word and I'm loathe to use it lightly but it really does seem as if few artists in the world could have made the leap, musically, that Radiohead did and for it to succeed so amazingly well is nothing short of awesome. Let's not forget that this intellectual nu-prog approach hardly killed off their fanbase either. Obviously neither

B: I think poets always have to fail the test! [laugh] G: Or if you were someone like Ebbe Borregaard then you would just crumple the whole thing up into a wad of paper and say, "I'm not going to do any of this bullshit!" and then you would get into the workshop. B: The test is the test! What were your first feelings about Spicer? G: I admired him immensely and got drawn in by Spicer into these wars that he would have with Robert Duncan and Robin Blaser where I was always on the wrong side, the losing side. B: Was there some kind of test of loyalties that had a dimension in poetic thinking? Fights over theoretical matters? G: Well, yes, they were fights over ... I can't remember. I mean one time I know that Spicer was accusing Duncan of having sold out to New York, and another time he was accusing him of having too may Egyptian gods in his poems and these things were very very serious to Spicer. Robin would tend to feel aggrieved and Duncan would simply dismiss the whole thing and joke about it, but for Spicer these were deadly serious issues . Spicer wrote about the human crisis in one of his poems. I mean, Spicer really did see what was happening to our species.

Jack Spicer - Some Thoughts
SPORTING LIFE The trouble with comparing a poet with a radio is that radios
don’t develop scar tissue. The tubes burn out, or with a
transistor, which most souls are, the battery or diagram
burns out replaceable or not replaceable, but not like that
punchdrunk fighter in the bar. The poet
Takes too many messages. The right to the ear that floored him
in New jersey. The right to say that he stood six rounds with
a champion.
Then they sell beer or go on sporting commissions, or, if the
scar tissue is too heavy, demonstrate in a bar where the
invisible champions might not have hit him. Too many of them. The poet is a radio. The poet is liar. The poet is a counterpunching radio. And those messages (God would not damn them) do not even know they are champions. (from the book of Language) (There are indentures in the text that do not iterate in the blog. Please check "Collected" for the real.) The presence of suffering. The way Spicer’s work is punctured by suffering. The Band-Aids on the radio bearing the "dictations". One thinks, or can think, Billy Holiday. The way in which her voice - never “very pretty” – rips (gently or harshly) through the veil (the surface) into the space of the sufferance.
