Jack Spicer The Train of Thought Gran Canaria: Zasterle Press, 1994.
The morning before Slingbot's party, Ralston had a dream. It was not a nice dream and, for that matter, the hotel bed was not a nice bed to dream in. He was a large city on acoast (rather like Atlantic City) and was about to build a large apartment house out of sand. The beach from which he was to gather the sand was covered with bench umbrellas which were of every color that anyone, even in a dream, could possibly imagine and he could see the gray water behind the beach umbrellas slopping away at its own purposes. Tracking Jack Spicer
"After Jack Spicer":
The Poetics of the Lowghost/Logos
The "Afterlife" of a US Counter-Poetics

This piece is 1300 words or about three printed pages long.
P OETRY, if it is any good in the sheer dialogical terms of uncanny otherness, comes from the discourse of the far future. The language of poetry can speak, again and again, the contemporary crisis that is ‘postmodernity.’ That is to say, poetry arises out of and speaks not so much from the liberal-humanistic ego terms of the romantic past, but from within the syntax and diction ( discourse ) of a post-war, "post-humanist" future as yet unknown and unsaid.
This US future in Spicer speaks through the "un/American" language of the poet who is not just speaking the voice of himself/herself, but more likely bespeaking (or trying at pains to express) what Barrett Watten (like Fredric Jameson in another, more sublime key) has theorized as the "total syntax" of our social-structural situation. Writing the contemporary , so to speak, from within its language binds and discontinuous bounds.

The House That Jack Built
The Collected Lectures of Jack Spicer
Spicer, Jack. Peter Gizzi, ed. and afterword
The House That Jack Built collects for the first time the four historic talks given by controversial poet Jack Spicer just before his early death in 1965. These lively and provocative lectures function as a gloss to Spicer's own poetry, a general discourse on poetics, and a cautionary handbook for young poets. This long-awaited document of Spicer's unorthodox poetic vision, what Robin Blaser has called "the practice of outside," is an authoritative edition of an underground classic.
Peter Gizzi's afterword elucidates some of the fundamental issues of Spicer's poetry and lectures, including the concept of poetic dictation, which Spicer renovates with vocabularies of popular culture: radio, Martians, and baseball; his use of the California landscape as a backdrop for his poems; and his visual imagination in relation to the aesthetics of west-coast funk assemblage. This book delivers a firsthand account of the contrary and turbulent poetics that define Spicer's ongoing contribution to an international avant-garde.
PETER GIZZI is the author of the poetry collections Artificial Heart (1997) and Periplum (1992), and he is the recipient of a Lavan Younger Poets Award from the Academy of American Poets. He is Assistant Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of California, Santa Cruz

Jack Spicer and the San Francisco Renaissance

Jack Spicer, unlike his contemporaries Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and Gary Snyder, was a poet who disdained publishing and relished his role as a social outcast. He died in 1965 virtually unrecognized, yet in the following years his work and thought have attracted and intrigued an international audience. Now this comprehensive biography gives a pivotal poet his due. Based on interviews with scores of Spicer's contemporaries, Poet Be Like God details the most intimate aspects of Spicer's life his family, his friends, his lovers illuminating not only the man but also many of his poems.
Such illumination extends also to the works of others whom Spicer came to know, including the writers Frank O'Hara, Robert Duncan, Denise Levertov, Helen Adam, Robin Blaser, Charles Olson, Philip K. Dick, Richard Brautigan, and Marianne Moore and the painters Jess, Fran Herndon, and Jay DeFeo. The resulting narrative, an engaging chronicle of the San Francisco Renaissance and the emergence of the North Beach gay scene during the 50s and 60s, will be indispensable reading for students of American literature and gay studies.

John Lester Spicer was born on January 30, 1925, in Hollywood, California, where his parents managed a small hotel. Migrating north in 1945, he arrived on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley.
He formed enduring connections with two other students, the poets Robin Blaser and Robert Duncan, and studied Old Norse, Anglo-Saxon, and German to prepare for a career in linguistics. This putative career was blighted by Spicer's refusal to sign the "Loyalty Oath," a provision of the Sloan-Levering Act that required all California state employees (including graduate teaching assistants at Berkeley) to swear loyalty to the United States.
He left the university and embarked on a number of low-paying, short-lived jobs in Minnesota, New York, and Boston. In 1957, he returned to San Francisco and began his mature career as a poet with the "dictated" poems of

$18.95, 265 pp. Jack Spicer died of drink in 1965. He was 40 years old, flat broke and all but unemployable. Though his work is increasingly recognized as among the most original of the postwar period, it was virtually unknown in his lifetime. While it must be acknowledged that Spicer himself contributed to this invisibility not only by his disdain for commercial publishing, but also by the formal difficulties posed by his work it must also be acknowledged that most of his more visible contemporaries were far too willing to ignore that work, and there was nothing benign in their neglect. Happily, we now have the first biography of this legendary San Francisco poet. Authors Lewis Ellingham and Kevin Killian labored long and hard to bring us this remarkable montage of interviews, memoirs, photographs and correspondence, and the resulting biography will doubtless engage a much broader audience than Spicer ever actively sought or attained. Perhaps by design

Jack Spicer The Tower of Babel An established writer from an Eastern college returning to his former San Francisco haunts becomes entangled in a labyrinthine series of events that culminate in the sudden, violent death of a respected poet. Described by Lewis Ellingham and Kevin Killian as a "satric look at the private world of poetry gone public in the wake of the Six Gallery Howl reading of October, 1955," The Tower of Babel included finely detailed sketches of the San Francisco poetry world and gay life as they existed then. Jack Spicer (1925-1965) was a key figure in the San Francisco Renaissance, closely associated with the poets Robert Duncan, Richard Brautigan, and Robin Blaser. According to Edward Foster's Jack Spicer, he "was among the most influencial poets of his generation. Thousands of poems and books were written under his tutelage and criticism." Spicer's "Vancouver Lectures" (collected in The House that Jack Built, edited by Peter Gizzi) are considered a seminal work in the development of postmodern American literature. His early poems are collected in One Night Stand and Other Poems, and his later ones in The Collected Books of Jack Spicer. click here to buy this book from Amazon!

home current issue previous issues information ... jubilat five 14 LETTERS TO JAMES ALEXANDER Jack Spicer Fort Wayne, Indiana, is the capital of Nitrogen. All streets end there. No buses arrive there except those that carry direct mail or cargoes of Negroes en route on the Underground Railway. There has never been a city made up of so many arms. You can see Troy, New York in the distance. Christmas poems and lovers' holly branches grow there in the winter as well as stuffings of turkeys, memory pie, and little droppings of passing angels. It is not reached by air. Fort Wayne, Indiana, has industries and tournament golf, and blocks and blocks of weeping buildings. It is built on high ground above the slough of utter unwinding. The birds which all look like seagulls or cormorants in its artificial sky finish singing when the day is over. At night they look like elephants. People watch them with telescopes as they hover. In Fort Wayne, Indiana the trees are dying and you can see footprints in the rather wet snow. People take their motor scooters to bed with them.
