My father was still a student, working to get into a masters program, and he was eventually accepted at the University of Minnesota (where I lived for two years), then later at the University of Southern California where he earned his Ph.D. In 1974, the family moved to Fair Oaks, California, and that was pretty much where I was raised. I survived elementary school, flourished in high school and somehow ended up the valedictorian. Running was my true passion however, and I was fortunate enough to receive a full track scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. Then, unfortunately, things got tough. I got injured, I went a little insane, and after breaking the Notre Dame record in the 4x800 relay (at the Drake relays-a record that still stands), I was injured for the rest of the year. On summer break back home after my freshman year, icing my tendon and moping around the house, my mom said "Do something-don't just pout." I asked "What?" She shrugged and said, "I don't know...write a book." "Fine," I said, and eight weeks later I was the proud creator of my first novel, The Passing

Home Nicholas Sparks Nicholas Sparks on Nicholas Sparks I was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on New Year's Eve, a scant eighty minutes prior to 1966. As fate would have it, my father was a bartender and was scheduled to work that night, usually the busiest of the year. Short on tip money but long on pride, he demanded the finest obstetrician in Omaha and I was brought into this world kicking and screaming, the second son of Patrick Michael and Jill Emma Marie Sparks, in a family that would include an additional child (a daughter) the following year. My family: (mom and dad, Micah (b. Dec. 1964) and Danielle (b. Dec. 1966) led a largely nomadic life in the beginning. Our father was still a student, working to get into a master's program, and he was eventually accepted to the University of Minnesota. I spent two years there and my memory of the place is limited. I had a dog named Pepper, a cardboard-box train I liked to sit in, and I remember picking bugs off the grille of the moving van when we finally left for Los Angeles in the summer of 1969. Los Angeles my home for the next four years while my father went to the University of Southern California for his Ph.D. is also fairly shadowy. I remember getting hit in the head with a brick thrown by an eighteen-year-old thug, I learned to ride a bike (losing only one tooth in the process), and unfortunately, my pet turtle committed suicide by diving off our second-floor patio. In 1973, I went to Grand Island, Nebraska for a year with my mom (and brother Micah and sister Danielle) while my dad did his thesis, then we all reunited in Fair Oaks, California, on December 1, 1974. I remember very clearly that

I did that because I wanted to write the type of novel that I hadn't written before, and because I think it's important for my readers that they don't read the same book over and over. Q: How did you come to create such an obsessive, evil character? NS: In crafting the character and story, I tried to make it seem believable. I can't tell you how tired I am of hearing stories about people who stay with violent partners. The question I always asked myself was: 'Why didn't the other person simply leave when the danger started?' With this story then, Richard and Julie went out only a couple of times before she realized it wasn't working; yet Richard wouldn't let her go. I think that could honestly happen to anyone-that's what dating is for, after all-to learn if you're compatible with someone. Q: Was it hard to create an original character and thriller?
