New Heaven, New War
Come to your heaven, you heavenly choirs,
Earth hath the heaven of your desires;
Remove your dwelling to your God,
A stall is now his best abode;
Sith men their homage do deny,
Come, angels, all their fault supply. His chilling cold doth heat require,
Come, seraphins, in lieu of fire;
This little ark no cover hath,
Let cherubs' wings his body swath;
Come, Raphael, this babe must eat,
Provide our little Toby meat. Let Gabriel be now his groom, That first took up his earthly room; Let Michael stand in his defence, Whom love hath linked to feeble sense; Let graces rock when he doth cry, Let angels sing his lullaby. The same you saw in heavenly seat, Is he that now sucks Mary's teat; Agonize your king a mortal wight, His borrowed weed lets not your sight; Come, kiss the manger where he lies, That is your bliss above the skies. This little babe so few days old, Is come to rifle Satan's fold; All hell doth at his presence quake, Though he himself for cold do shake; For in this weak, unarmed wise, The gates of hell he will surprise.

Robert Southwell and The Burning Babe
Robert Southwell was born in Norfolk, England in 1561. He was part of a Catholic family. In 1576 he left England to receive a Catholic education abroad. Southwell attended the Jesuit college in Paris and in 1584 was ordained a priest. After traveling around Europe, Southwell returned to England. Many Catholics were leaving the country because of persecution by the Church of England. Southwell became known as a recusant. Recusants were those who resisted the Anglican Church. Southwell also began writing with the intent of turning English poetry from the profane to the virtuous. By doing these things, he became an enemy of the throne. When back in England, Southwell became the unofficial leader of the Catholic Church. For years, he hid missionaries and led services. In 1591 Southwell wrote An Humble Supplication to Her Majesty expressing his disagreement with the Church of England. A year later, he was imprisoned. In 1595, at the age of 33, Southwell was hanged for treason. Before his imprisonment, Southwell wrote many religious poems. Among these was

Forty Martyrs of England and Wales St. Robert Southwell Born at Horsham St. Faith's, Norfolk, England, in 1561
Sent to be educated at Douai Joined the Jesuits in 1578
Ordained priest in 1584 at Rome, and became prefect of studies in the English College
Jesuit poet After ordination left Rome for England with Henry Garnet. Both were almost arrested upon landing but escaped capture and went on to work with the Catholics in London.
Robert spent six years in zealous and successful missionary work and moved under various disguises traveling from one Catholic house to another. He belongs to that band of Jesuit English martyrs during the persecution of Catholics from 1535 to 1681 who were determined not to abandon the Catholic laity, but to be with them, providing the consolation of the Eucharist.
Robert's father had conformed to the new Protestant religion. Finally he was betrayed in 1592. Robert never gave any information about other priests
or Catholics, even though for three years he was interrogated under atrocious torture. He was
transferred to Newgate prison where he was confined in a dungeon swarming with vermin and
frequently chained in such a way that he could neither stand, sit nor lie down. His jailers were

English Martyrs
Malcolm Brennan STUDENTS OF ENGLISH literature know Robert Southwell, S. J., as a "sweet singer" of delicate and sensitive poetry. And while his life and writings show him to be a very gentle man and capable of exquisite and even dainty emotions, he is also to be seen as a man of tough determination and fearless constancy. Tender sentiments will not make an ordinary saint, much less a martyr. Born into an ancient and illustrious family in about 1560, Robert was stolen from his cradle by a gypsy or vagabond. He later reflected on the family tale: "What if I had remained with the vagrant? How abject! How destitute of the knowledge or the reverence of God! In what debasement of vice, in what great peril of crimes, in what indubitable risk of a miserable death and eternal punishment!" While the language is a bit theatrical, it should not be construed as an aristocrat's revulsion toward the lower orders; rather, it is a generous compassion for the spiritual dangers that afflict the destitute. For his education Robert was sent very early to the Continent and studied in Paris under Father Thomas Darby shire, the former archdeacon of Essex who, for conscience' sake had relinquished his considerable ecclesiastical preferments at the accession of Queen Elizabeth. Robert's vocation to the priesthood came early, as did his attraction to the Jesuits. Always an excellent student, he attended the English college at Douai, then the Jesuit novitiate in Rome. He was ordained a priest in 1584.

Sir Robert Southwell Papers
INTRODUCTION Sir Robert Southwell Papers A substantial volume, bound in the Middle Hill boards of Sir Thomas Phillipps' great collection, the collection contains an important series of letters regarding English Catholicism and the "Popish Plot." The letters, together with retained copies of answers, are addressed to British diplomat Sir Robert Southwell and concern Edward Coleman (who was unjustly accused of treason by Titus Oates) and a subsequent, but related, controversy with the great French Jansenist logician, Antoine Arnauld. In 1678, Titus Oates, a clever and bold perjurer, concocted and published charges that the English Catholics were about to assissinate King Charles II, subvert Protestantism in England, and reconvert the Country to Romanism by fire and sword. The charges were widely believed and caused a great panic. One of the first victims of Oates was Edward Coleman, tried and executed in 1678. He was the first of 35 persons executed on the testimony of Oates. One of the witnesses called in the trial was Sir Robert Southwell (1635 - 1702), a civil servant and diplomatist, whose testimony was generally favorable to Coleman. When it became obvious that the "Popish Plot" was a gigantic fraud, Antoine Arnauld (1612 -1694; then living in the Netherlands) wrote a book in defense of the English Catholics

Born in 1561, poet and Jesuit priest Robert Southwell may have been one of the few men to have brought a tear to the eye of Elizabeth I in her adult life. In his death also is a lesson for any government that would choose to crush dissent with the blunt tool of state execution

"Good Cousin, WS" Robert Southwell had returned to England in 1586 as an ordained priest, and therefore effectively an enemy of the State. Southwell made an art of moving covertly around the country, pursued relentlessly by Topcliffe and his agents. Southwell was different from many Catholic activists in that he saw no problem with being a Catholic and also being loyal to the Queen. Southwell was also a commentator on the poetry of the time, advocating a return to religious verse, and possibly criticizing racy, crowd-pleasing works like Shakespeare's "Venus and Adonis." In a way he was advocating that poets start addressing issues rather than just being "pop," more Rage Against the Machine than Britney. A poet himself, the most famous of Southwell's works is "The Burning Babe." Printed posthumously, his poetry would become some of the most popular of the age. Southwell's luck ran out in 1592 and he was captured, taken to the Tower and mercilessly tortured by

The Burning Babe
As I in hoary winter's night stood shivering in the snow,
Surprised I was with sudden heat which made my heart to glow;
And lifting up a fearful eye to view what fire was near,
A pretty babe all burning bright did in the air appear;
Who, though scorched with excessive heat, such floods of tears did shed,
As though his floods should quench his flames, which with his tears were fed.
"Alas," quoth he, "but newly born, in fiery heats I fry,
Yet none approach to warm their hearts, or feel my fire but I!
My faultless breast the furnace is, the fuel wounding thorns,
Love is the fire, and sighs the smoke, the ashes shame and scorns;
The fuel justice layeth on, and mercy blows the coals, The metal in this furnace wrought are men's defiled souls, For which, as now on fire I am to work them to their good, So will I melt into a bath to wash them in my blood." With this he vanished out of sight and swiftly shrunk away, And straight I called unto mind that it was Christmas Day.

    Southwell's "A Vale of Tears" : A Psychoanalysis of Form
    by Gary Kuchar
    Putting psychoanalytic conceptions of self-transformation through speech in dialogue with early modern devotional techniques of spiritualizing the physical, this essay asks how Robert Southwell's poem "A Vale of Tears" constitutes a work of mourning. Although Louis Martz's thesis regarding the direct influence of Ignatian meditation on Southwell's poetry has been seriously challenged on a number of fronts, by Joseph D. Scallon in particular, there seems little doubt that certain Ignatian themes and meditative patterns are significant to the poem and to the description of the landscape in particular. The poem presents the speaker's developing awareness of his consciousness of sin and ends with an emphasis on the spiritual importance of transforming "former faults" into "plainful thoughts" (69, 57). This thematic focus clearly resembles the meditative sentiments found in the meditations one sees in Saint Ignatius Loyola, where the practitioner "is to consider who God is against whom I have sinned, reflecting on the divine attributes and comparing them with their contraries in me; God's wisdom with my ignorance, God's omnipotence with my weakness, God's justice with my iniquity" (27).
