Gary Soto reminds me of Mark Twain who also used his own boyhood experiences on which to base his many books and characters. The Central Valley of California is central to the action in many of Soto's books. The streets and neighborhoods of Fresno, California, are an integral part of his writing. He has said, "For me streets have always mattered. I conjure up inside my head an image of our old street in south Fresno." The area where he grew up was much like the barrios he writes about complete with junkyards and big factories all around. In his biographical essays for younger readers, such as

    Gary Soto
Soto lives with his wife and daughter in Berkeley, California. Gary Soto's favorite food is frijoles (beans). Here's a recipe for your family to try! Frijoles
    • 2 1/3 cups dried black beans 1 large onion 1 large green bell pepper 2 tablespoons cider vinegar 2 or 3 bay leaves 1 tsp. salt
Rinse beans. In a 4-quart heavy saucepan, cover beans with cold water and soak for one day. Bring soaked beans to a boil in water, adding more water, if necessary, to cover beans by about 1 1/2 inches. Simmer beans, partly covered, over low heat for 1 hour, or until beans just start getting tender but are not falling apart. Chop onion and bell pepper and stir into beans along with vinegar, bay leaves, and salt. Simmer beans, partly covered, for 2 to 3 hours, until they are very tender. Remove bay leaves. You can eat the beans hot, but they're even better if you let them cool and then refrigerate them for a day or so before eating.

Soto, Gary Living Up the Street
Genre Collection (Essays) (167 pp.) Essay (167 pp.) Keywords Acculturation Adolescence Body Self-Image Children ... Urban Violence Summary In these "narrative recollections" poet Gary Soto reflects on his Mexican American childhood in the ethnically mixed laboring-class neighborhoods of Fresno, California. His was a life lived at the marginseconomic margins and cultural margins. In these recollections of family relationships, youthful mischief-making, farm and factory jobs, adolescent rebellion, and the transition to professional writing Soto subtly and humorously draws our attention to the discontinuities between the lived lives of Chicanos and Anglos. "The Beauty Contest" describes how young Gary entered his younger half-brother in a playground beauty contest. "Strong build, a chipped tooth, half Mexican and half whitehe might win, I thought." (43) Gary knows that only a lighter complexioned child could meet the Anglo standards of beauty that prevail. In fact, he has internalized those standards himself: " . . . we were awed by the blond and fair skinned kids in good clothes. They looked beautiful, I thought." We are led to infer that the Anglo contestants come from a world of comfort and parental attentiveness whereas Gary has been left on his own to tend to his brother while his parents are away at their work of manual labor.

Not many authors kill their main character on page two, but when Gary Soto does in The Afterlife the tactic results in a richly textured coming of age story. Chuy is a normal teenage guy, making his way in the barrios of Fresno, California, and hoping to impress a pretty girl. Carefully combing his hair in the restroom at Club Estrella, he only has a few moments to consider his "loverboy" strategy before his young life is (literally) cut short by a knife-wielding stranger who misinterprets a compliment.

    Ilene Cooper Book Description
You'd think a knife in the ribs would be the end of things, but for Chuy, that's when his life at last gets interesting. He finally sees that people love him, faces the consequences of his actions, finds in himself compassion and bravery . . . and even stumbles on what may be true love. A funny, touching, and wholly original story by one of the finest authors writing for young readers today.

Soto's clear, finely honed poet's voice shines in this tale of barrio life in Fresno, California. Nineteen-year-old Eddie has dropped out of junior college and is attempting to support himself through the occasional gardening job and painting curbside numbers in the wealthier parts of town. However, he's relentlessly followed by the unbearable heat of the Central Valley summer and a wholly believable run of bad luck: his cousin is killed, his employer's truck is stolen, and his buddy is stabbed right in front of him. On top of that, his aunt urges him to avenge his cousin's murder. The broad and easy humor of Crazy Weekend (1994) is lacking here, but Eddie's wry observations in the face of his many predicaments provide welcome relief. Although the coach at the neighborhood playground offers Eddie material assistance and moral support, there is no upbeat ending. The "buried onions," which Eddie imagines as the underground source for the world's tears, pervade the tone and plot, but the unvarnished depiction of depressed and depressing barrio life is as important as the positive images of Latinos Soto has created in his other works.
