1. Meet Gary Soto
Gary Soto. Unlike many authors, Gary Soto never thought about becoming a writer when he was a kid. Instead, he wanted to be a priest or a paleontologist a scientist who studies fossils and bones.

Gary Soto
Soto lives with his wife and daughter in Berkeley, California. Gary Soto's favorite food is frijoles (beans). Here's a recipe for your family to try! Frijoles
  • 2 1/3 cups dried black beans 1 large onion 1 large green bell pepper 2 tablespoons cider vinegar 2 or 3 bay leaves 1 tsp. salt
Rinse beans. In a 4-quart heavy saucepan, cover beans with cold water and soak for one day. Bring soaked beans to a boil in water, adding more water, if necessary, to cover beans by about 1 1/2 inches. Simmer beans, partly covered, over low heat for 1 hour, or until beans just start getting tender but are not falling apart. Chop onion and bell pepper and stir into beans along with vinegar, bay leaves, and salt. Simmer beans, partly covered, for 2 to 3 hours, until they are very tender. Remove bay leaves. You can eat the beans hot, but they're even better if you let them cool and then refrigerate them for a day or so before eating. Gary Soto
Prepared by Sherry Strunk Author's History Gary Soto was born April 12, 1952, in Fresno, California to MexicanAmerican parents. His grandparents immigrated from Mexico during the Great Depression and found jobs as farm laborers. Soto grew up poor in the San Joaquin Valley and learned a hard work ethic through chores, such as moving lawns, picking grapes, painting house numbers on street curbs, and washing cars. When Gary was five his father died as the result of a factory accident. His mother was left to raise her three children Gary, his older brother, Rick, and his younger sister, Debra with the help of the children's grandparents. Soto describes his family as an "illiterate" family. They did not have books and were not encouraged to read. In fact, Gary did not start writing poetry until he was in college. He also is an author of fiction, nonfiction, and picture books. Soto earned an English degree at California State University at Fresno in 1974. He continued his education to earn a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at the University of California at Irvine. While working on his graduate work, Soto married Carolyn Oda, the daughter of JapaneseAmerican farmers. After receiving his master's degree, Soto became writerinresidence at San Diego State University and a lecturer in Chicano studies at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1977, he became an associate professor in both the Chicano studies and English departments at UC, Berkeley, where he has been a senior lecturer since 1992.

Gary Soto
Gary Soto web site.) HOW THINGS WORK Today it's going to cost us twenty dollars
To live. Five for a softball. Four for a book,
A handful of ones for coffee and two sweet rolls,
Bus fare, rosin for your mother's violin.
We're completing our task. The tip I left
For the waitress filters down
Like rain, wetting the new roots of a child
Perhaps, a belligerent cat that won't let go
Of a balled sock until there's chicken to eat.
As far as I can tell, daughter, it works like this:
You buy bread from a grocery, a bag of apples From a fruit stand, and what coins Are passed on helps others buy pencils, glue, Tickets to a movie in which laughter Is thrown into their faces. If we buy goldfish, someone tries on a hat. If we buy crayons, someone walks home with a broom. A tip. a small purchase here and there, And things just keep going. I guess. Introduction
This supplemental unit on Baseball In April and Living Up the Street was developed by teachers in the Schools of California Online Resources for Educators (SCORE) Project, funded by the California Technology Assistance Project (CTAP) and the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA). Gary Soto is an acclaimed poet, essayist and fiction writer. His writing is based upon his adventures as a Mexican American boy growing up in Fresno, California. He won the Before Columbus Foundation Award in 1985 for Living Up The Street , his first published book of prose. His short story collection, Baseball In April , was listed as one of the American Library Association's Best Books for Young Adults. The streets and neighborhoods of Fresno are an integral part of his writing. He has said, "For me streets have always mattered. I conjure up inside my head an image of our old street in south Fresno." The area where he grew up was much like the barrios he writes about complete with junkyards and big factories all around. He is widely read by adults and young people. Many of his stories and poems appear in language arts textbooks across the nation, and several of his books have been translated into other languages. As the students do these activities, they will consider the following questions:
