His career coincided almost exactly with the rise, maturity, and downfall of the Athenian Empire. Sophocles' father, Sophillus, was not a member of the Attic aristocracy, but he was a rich man through the efforts of his slaves who were employed in various sorts of manufacturing. Consequently the boy was educated as was customary for youths of aristocratic family, in dancing and music, coupled with gymnastic instruction. In fact, he was so conspicuous for his beauty of form and for his skill in dancing and music, that he was chosen to lead the chorus of boys in the public celebration of the defeat of the Persians at Salamis. Sophocles made his first appearance as a contending dramatist at the City Dionysia in 486 B.C. when he was twenty-eight years old, winning a victory over

Sophocles Born in 495 B.C. about a mile northwest of Athens, Sophocles was to become one of the great playwrights of the golden age. The son of a wealthy merchant, he would enjoy all the comforts of a thriving Greek empire. He studied all of the arts. By the age of sixteen, he was already known for his beauty and grace and was chosen to lead a choir of boys at a celebration of the victory of Salamis. Twelve years later, his studies complete, he was ready to compete in the City Dionysiaa festival held every year at the Theatre of Dionysus in which new plays were presented. In his first competition, Sophocles took first prizedefeating none other than Aeschylus himself. More than 120 plays were to follow. He would go on to win eighteen first prizes, and he would never fail to take at least second. An accomplished actor, Sophocles performed in many of his own plays. In the Nausicaa or The Women Washing Clothes , he performed a juggling act that so fascinated his audience it was the talk of Athens for many years. However, the young athenian's voice was comparatively weak, and eventually he would give up his acting career to pursue other ventures.

SOPHOCLES AND HIS TRAGEDIES This document was originally published in The Drama: Its History, Literature and Influence on Civilization, vol. 1 . ed. Alfred Bates. London: Historical Publishing Company, 1906. pp. 106-112. Purchase Books by Sophocles Colonus, a village near Athens, was the place of Sophocles' birth, and the date, 495 B.C., thus making him thirty years younger than Aeschylus and fifteen years older than Euripides In his younger days he appears to have been somewhat over fond of women and wine, and this he himself admits in one of his sayings recorded by Plato: "I thank old age for delivering me from the tyranny of my appetites." Yet, even in his later years, the charms of the gentler sex were at times too strong for the great dramatist. Aristophanes accused him of avarice, though there is nothing in what is known of Sophocles to substantiate the charge, and this is further disproved by the utter neglect of his affairs, which brought on him the imputation of lunacy, refuted by reading to his judges a passage from a newly-written play. The occasional excesses referred to appear to have been the only blemish on an otherwise blameless and contented life. Dramatic Career For more than sixty years after this event Sophocles continued to compose and exhibit tragedies and satyric dramas. Of the one hundred and eighty plays ascribed to him, probably seventeen were spurious, and the number of his first prizes is variously stated at from eighteen to twenty-four, with many second prizes, so that in this respect he left both Aeschylus and Euripides far behind. So far from being dulled with age and toil, his powers seem only to have assumed a mellower tone, a more touching pathos, a sweeter and gentler mode of thought and expression.

Study Guide for Sophocles' Antigone
by Robin Mitchell-Boyask, Associate Professor of Classics, Temple University There is an on-line text with hyperlinks to a wide range of information. As with all web pages, underlined passages indicate hyperlinks to further information. This guide is keyed to the translation by Robert Fagles (Penguin Press).
Setting
The drama begins at dawn, after a night in which there has been a war in Thebes between armies led by the two sons of Oedipus. Keep in mind that the Greek theater was in the open air, and that the first performances of the day would begin at daybreak. Thu s, imagine that the time of day of the setting would be identical to the performance time.
As you read the first scene, consider the gravity of the city's condition and how aware Antigone seems of it. Throughout the play, Antigone and Creon will talk much about friends and enemies. Think about what each means by these terms. In general, Antigone and Creon tend to use the same words but mean different things by them. For example, consider Antigone's re ference to being a "traitor" (57). This is a political term; does Antigone mean a traitor to the city, or to something else? Compare with Creon at 580. Why does Antigone assume that Creon's order is directed against her and Ismene? When Creon appears later, consider whether his conduct and language in fact supports her assumption.

Between Aeschylus and Euripides in the history of the development of Greek tragedy, Sophocles was a masterful and innovative tragedian. He added a third actor to the format developed by Aeschylus.
Aristotle considered Sophocles' Oedipus Rex to be the perfect model of a tragedy. Sophocles made use of the traditional tragic formula: the fall of a flawed protagonist in a high position, evoking pitty and fear in the audience and making use of the audience's awareness of the outcome of the story to create dramatic irony.
The judges of the Dionysian theatre awarded him first prize for 24 out of the 30 plays he performed there. His work is a timeless reminder of the early developments of tragedy and drama.

SOPHOCLES (495—406 B.C.), Greek tragic poet, was born at Colonus in the neighbourhood of Athens. His father’s name was Sophillus; and the family burial-place is said to have been about a mile and a half from the city on the Decelean Way. The date assigned for the poet’s birth is in accordance with the tale that young Sophocles, then a pupil of the musician Lamprus, was chosen to lead the chorus of boys in the celebration of the victory of Salamis (480 n.e.). The time of his death is fixed by the allusions to it in The Frogs of Aristophanes and in The Muses, a lost play of Phrynichus, the comic... [

this was the best review of the Oedipus tirology I could find on the net so far. Thank you.
I had read on another site of how the trilogy was compared to Jim Thompson and James Ellroy's "The Black Dahlia" and the rest of their four-novel epic based in Los Angeles.
This review was more than informative and well indepth in the relation between the epic itself and the era of civilization in which it was so embraced.

If you are a student assigned to read "Oedipus the King", and perhaps also to comment on Aristotle's ideas about tragedy and "tragic flaws", this site will help you get started. Warning: This is NOT a "family" site, and Sophocles is NOT "family entertainment". "Oedipus the King" is a monument to Sophocles's dramatic genius, and to the freedom of Athenian thought. It develops a shocking, profoundly immoral idea about a human being's ultimate relationship to the universe. Thankfully, there is no reason to think that Sophocles's idea is true, or that Sophocles really believed it. Commentators on Sophocles, beginning with Aristotle, have tried to cover over the obvious. This explains the nonsense about "tragic flaws" and "hybris". If you want something nice, please leave now What's here? 1. The Folk Tale We don't know whether there was a historical Oedipus. "Oedipus" means "swollen feet". The Greeks pronounced it "oy-DEEP-us". Oed- is the same root as "oedema / edema" (tissue swelling; the British preserve the initial "o"), while "-pus" is feet (hence "octopus", the eight-footed animal.) Laius and Jocasta were king and queen of Thebes, a town in Greece. One day, they had a baby boy. An oracle prophesied that the boy would grow up and kill his father and marry his mother. To thwart the prophecy, Laius and Jocasta decided to kill their baby. In those days, it was usual to leave an unwanted or defective baby in the wilderness. Laius and Jocasta did this. To be extra-sure, they pierced his little feet and tied them together. (Don't worry about this detail, which makes no sense. It must have been introduced to explain the hero's name.)

    20. Introduction To Signal Processing
    Book by sophocles J. Orfanidis.

    Introduction to
    Signal Processing
    Sophocles J. Orfanidis
    Preface
This book provides an applications-oriented introduction to digital signal processing written primarily for electrical engineering undergraduates. Practicing engineers and graduate students may also find it useful as a first text on the subject. Digital signal processing is everywhere. Today's college students hear "DSP" all the time in their everyday life - from their CD players, to their electronic music synthesizers, to the sound cards in their PCs. They hear all about "DSP chips", "oversampling digital filters", "1-bit A/D and D/A converters", "wavetable sound synthesis", "audio effects processors", "all-digital audio studios". By the time they reach their junior year, they are already very eager to learn more about DSP.
    Approach
The learning of DSP can be made into a rewarding, interesting, and fun experience for the student by weaving into the material several applications, such as the above, that serve as vehicles for teaching the basic DSP concepts, while generating and maintaining student interest. This has been the guiding philosophy and objective in writing this text. As a result, the book's emphasis is more on signal processing than discrete-time system theory, although the basic principles of the latter are adequately covered. The book teaches by example and takes a hands-on practical approach that emphasizes the
