82. S. P. Sumtow's Laughing Dead

Are you ready for "The Laughing Dead?" S.P. Somtow (of Vampire Junction fame) brings his latest cult horror flick to HotNetwork for net fans to enjoy! At a recent reading sponsored by our favorite Horror bookstore, Dark Delicacies (as seen on the recent Fox-TV special about vampires) we had the pleasure of catching up with proprietors Del and Sue as well as well-known science fiction and horror authors S.P. Somtow and Ed Bryant. Somtow gave a very amusing introduction of Ed, who read one of his original unpublished stories about love, lust, greed, violence, guns and innocence that tantalized all present. We would tell you more, but .... it's a secret! E-mail me if you would like to see him on our site. He has a new book coming out this year I would love to preview for youbut only if you beg for it! So bite me...I mean, write me, you vamp lovers! But hey, back to Somtow and "The Laughing Dead". So, why are the dead laughing? We'll have new video clips on this page soon so you can find out!
You're gonna love 'em...we've been laughing like the dead ourselves while sampling them for ya...video editing takes time, but what could be more fun than Somtow's twisted Thai humor and impressive visual sensibilitymore on that in part 2 of this review. I'll be writing that one from the plane with Linnea...a trip to Florida for a new movie again, maybe CD and conference too, I'll have to check the itinerary. Somtow...this bootleg video you gave us doesn't have any English liner notes! I guess I'm on my own now, since I don't read Thai.

Dunkle Engel

84. S. P. Somtow, Temple Of Night
SP somtow, Temple of Night (Harper Entertainment, 1999). Bangkok, city of forbidden fruit, secret sins, and ripe flesh for the taking.
http://www.greenmanreview.com/templeofnight.html
S. P. Somtow, Temple of Night (Harper Entertainment, 1999) Bangkok, city of forbidden fruit, secret sins, and ripe flesh for the taking. Bangkok, city of strict social hierarchies, centuries-old traditions, and strong ties to the spirit world. This duality ancient temples a stone's throw from Blockbuster video stores, abject poverty alongside immense wealth, tourists mingling unknowingly with shaman is the dramatic backdrop for Somtow's foray into J. O'Barr's Crow universe. Atmospheric Bangkok is assuredly the sole highlight of Temple of Night (the novel's title, by the way, is either a brilliant play on words, or a horrible pun; you'll have to decide for yourself). While from time to time Somtow sinks into cliched images of world-weary prostitutes and jaded street urchins, his otherwise lovingly detailed descriptions of this exquisitely foreign city and interjections of Thai expressions and culture into the narrative are a breath of fresh air in an otherwise flat and stale story. The nexus between Lelliott and Temple is Dao (Star), a young prostitute who captures the attention of both, for very different reasons. Temple sees her as the living embodiment of a nightmare, a fitting sacrifice for his ascent into immortality. Stephen sees in her a dream come true (literally), and a good story, an Emmy for sure. He feels pity for her at first, and uses his journalistic resources to try and free her from a bleak future. Both are too slow to admit love to themselves, and the story is spiraling down to its inevitable conclusion before the realization comes to either. By then, normalcy is far out of reach and all hell's nearly broken loose.

A book review by Evelyn C. Leeper
Walt Whitman. Zombies. Abraham Lincoln's funeral. Voodoo. Lord Byron. A panther woman. Edgar Allan Poe. And who better to write about all this but a Thai writer? Only in America. Well, yes, but all this makes DARKER ANGELS a hard book to review. I liked it a lot, but much of that may be due to the presence of Walt Whitman as a character. I find Whitman fascinating, not just as a poet, but as an observer of the Civil War. And DARKER ANGELS has a lot of that sort of observation of the Civil War, even if it is leavened with voodoo. But if you're not a Whitman fan, I'm not sure how you'll react to this. The structure is very complex with Griffin Bledsoe telling Tyler Tyler telling Jimmy Lee Cox telling Zachary Brown telling Mrs. Grainger about the strange goings-on. (Or something like thatI can't be sure this was quite this nested. There may have been some pops on the stack I missed.) The atmosphere is there, but the late appearance of Lord Byron and Edgar Allan Poe was in some way the straw that broke the camel's back, and I have to say that there's just too much going on here to make a satisfactory novel for most people. But I can't *un*-recommend this either. Ultimately, all I can is that here is what this. If you think it sounds interesting, give it a try. If you think it would give you a headache, give it a miss.
