Welcome to the forum
Greetings all and welcome to my completely unauthorized "Talk about L. Neil Smith" discussion forum. This is the place for fans (and even critics) of Smith's novels, essays, politics, and other activities to share their thoughts and knowledge.
In this forum, you won't get run off for asking what the "L." in Smith's name stands for. Personally, I'd like to know now you pronounce the "§" in "§-field"!
But I hope that people will sound off on a wider range of topics, so long as they relate to LNS. I will moderate this list only to excise libelous statements or gross stupidity (which in Smith's case is redundant he's supposed to be an excellent shot).
Who am I to be doing this? Just a long-time libertarian and sci-fi enthusiast who only fairly recently discovered the treasure trove of Smith's works. My first exposure to Smith was the short story published in the comic-book anthology "Open Space," when it was published in the early 90s. Later I re-discovered Smith through his Webley page, and started reading his books: Bretta Martyn, The Probability Broach, Tom Paine Maru, The Crystal Empire, Pallas, The War Dove, The Venus Belt, Their Majesties' Bucketeers, and The Gallatin Divergance (so far, in the order which I read them).

L. Neil Smith
Former gunsmith, ballistician, reserve police officer, and likely the most widely-published and prolific libertarian writer in the world, L. Neil Smith produces fiction which is often compared to the works of Robert A. Heinlein and H. Beam Piper. Author of countless essays and articles, as well, he's been called "the most frequently crossposted writer on the internet". Neil has also performed as a professional musician, playing banjo and guitar. An enthusiastic competitor in the long-range sport of handgun metallic silhouette shooting, he lives in Fort Collins, Colorado with his wife Cathy, his daughter Rylla, and two striped orange cats named Amber and Ambrose.
Forge of the Elders
Just when the 21st century thought it was safe to throw Marxism on the ash heap of history once and for all, a worldwide economic collapse suddenly made freedom seem less desirable than security, and the Total State turned out to be the comeback kid. In the US, where the power elite had long shown heartfelt affection for collectivism and making the trains (nationalized, of course) run on time, communism had a second coming. Which meant that Earth was now the Red Planet. The few holdouts and counterrevolutionaries would be dealt with in good time. Of course, collectivization only made the worldwide depression worse. But then the People's Astronomers noticed an asteroid with unusual spectrographic properties, seemingly a treasure trove of valuable minerals that might rejuvenate the Earth's economy. So three aged NASA shuttles were pulled out of mothballs, crewed by a team of hand-picked misfits whom no one would miss, and sent to the asteroid.

If L. Neil Smith Ran the Circus
IF I RAN THE CIRCUS
by L. Neil Smith
Special to The Libertarian Enterprise, Issue 212
Reprint permission reproduced below. (With apologies to Dr. Seuss) For quite some time now several years, in fact people have been asking me if I intend to run for President (of the United States, that is), and if so, as a Libertarian Party nominee or an independent candidate. I have replied in a variety of ways, more or less depending on the circumstances, often saying I wasn't a candidate for anything, but just a guy whose friends were trying to persuade him to run. Although that became sort of a running joke, it was true, as far as it went. Unlike most office-seekers, I would enter the fray sort of against my better judgement (not to mention the better judgement of my wife and daughter), without any money to speak of, without useful political connections, and with a job I was contractually obligated to keep doing, no matter what. The issue of my candidacy had more to do with what other individuals wanted and were willing to do, than it had with me. From the beginning, some of those individuals, some of those friends, created websites and mailing lists, ostensibly to convince me to run, and to discuss strategy and tactics. The most recent of them is "Smith2004" on Yahoo, and it's an amazing thing. Its participants run the gamut from conservative (the real kind, not those neo-phonies running the GOP these days) through good, old-fashioned libertarians (as defined by their adherence to what they've begun to call the "Zero Aggression Principle"), to outright, straightforward individualist anarchists.

The contract calls for me to have finished the script before Christmas, 2002. The artwork will be done with his usual extraordinary style and grace by my close friend and colleague Scott Bieser, whose work appears all over the Internet. Before I read The American Zone and The Probability Broach , I was expecting a Marquis of Queensbury sort of scrap about the merits of more or less government. Silly me. Here it is. Complete, unexpurgated, vitriolic, pure quill L. Neil Smith. SFRevu: A while back, a mutual friend at Tor said you'd be happy to do an e-mail interview. At the time I was suckered in by the picture of an airship floating across the cover of The American Zone and the thought of an interview with a smart, thoughtful libertarian. By the time I finished TAZ I was scared to death of what that might unleash. You don't do anything by halves, do you? LNS: Well, you know I'm one of "Heinlein's Children", and I believe that "Anything worth doing is worth overdoing". I also think we're up against a threat of losing western civilization, not to Communism or the Third World, but to the kind of creeps generated by Harvard and Yale, and Georgetown, and so on, creeps who try to make you think there are two, fiercely-opposed political parties, but who actually represent exactly the same opinions and interests. The Clintons and Bushes of the world have gotten a long way with their program, which is essentially to erase the American Revolution from history and turn us into the sort of sensory-deprived tax-serfs portrayed metaphorically in

When They Came for the Smokers ...
by L. Neil Smith
A friend of mine calls himself a "political smoker". He doesn't smoke. He never has. But told some time ago at a Los Angeles supper club that he and other members would henceforward be forbidden to smoke, his immediate reaction was to borrow a cigarette from somebody sitting nearby, stand, and light it up in protest. As he sees it, his interests, in terms of his individual and civil rights, run parallel with those of smokers who are being increasingly stripped of theirs. I am a former smoker. I quit cold more than a year ago, after suffering a heart attack. Even before that, I never claimed that smoking is good for anybody, just that I had always enjoyed doing it—and that a great many lies were being told about it by individuals and groups who had gone beyond non-smoking to become anti- smokers. But I, too, remain a political smoker. Exactly like many another do-gooder-targetted group, smokers today are well along in the process of losing their human rights—and more and more, it seems, their very humanity—to social parasites who, as H.L. Mencken is reputed to have put it long ago, awaken in the middle of the night, sweat- drenched and trembling with the morbid fear that somewhere, someone might be happy. Until now, there hasn't been an effective way to crush these lice on the American body politic—and their bloodsucking symbionts in media and government—between the thumb of the Ninth Amendment and the forefinger of the First.
