In a future intersteallar empire run by corrupt and decadent Conglomerate, a great injustice forces Arran Islay to become a space pirate. We start off with a vile torture prologue, then move to young Arran on Skye, recuperating from a serious childhood illness. The book appears to be an exercise in style, and I got only as far as chapter three before giving up. The overly precious style made my eyes slide off the page too many times. The occasional convoluted sentence like

Just ask about either Amendment. If what you get back is a spirited defense of the ideas of this country's Founding Fathers, what you've got is a libertarian. By shameful default, libertarians have become America's last and only reliable stewards of the Bill of Rights. Now, when he stood in the doorway and beat her to a bloody pulp to keep her home, would we memorialize him as a hero? Or would we treat him like a dangerous lunatic who should be locked up, if for no other reason, then for trying to maintain the appearance of a relationship where there wasn't a relationship any more? What value, we would ask, does he find in continuing to possess her in an involuntary association, when her heart and mind had left him long ago?
L. Neil Smith is the award-winning author of "The Probability Broach", "The Mitzvah" (with Aaron Zelman) and many other books.

1. First things first, Mike. Why are you in competition for the Libertarian Party's nomination for the Presidency of the United States? 2. You have a well-deserved reputation for your knowledge of the Constitution, especially the Bill of Rights. At the same time, you're a libertarian of good repute and long standing. In your opinion the opinion of a potential President of the United States what comes first, the Zero Aggression Principle or the Constitution?
The Zero Agression Principle, of course! That principle is summarized by the Declaration of Independence which states that ALL men are created equal, asserting that their rights to life, liberty, and "property" are unalienable. The purpose of the Constitution is simply to outline a form of government that will put the Zero Agression Principle into practice. When it fails (and some think that it has) we have the right "to alter or abolish it, and to institute NEW government, laying its foundation on such principles (such as Zero Aggression), and organizing its power in such form, (such as the Constitution) as to them, shall seem, most likely to effect their safety and happiness."

A Lever Long Enough to Move the World
Sunni Maravillosa I thought I knew my friend, L. Neil Smith. I've read many of his novels, I've read lots of his essays, I've contributed to his publication, The Libertarian Enterprise , and I've visited him in his home several times. I thought I knew him... but, as it turns out, I'm glad I didn't know him as well as I'd thought. Otherwise, his recent book Lever Action: Essays on Liberty wouldn't have been the delightful surprise it turned out to be for me. Let me back up a bit... I said that L. Neil Smith is a friend of mine. Indeed he is, a friend of the highest caliber (pun intended): introduced by a mutual friend, it was L. Neil and the other friend who took me, a rather confused woman at the time, and helped me become the activist and writer I am today. I had just been introduced to libertarianism, after having read Ayn Rand's two epic novels, and was facing the fairly daunting realization that I might be an anarchist, to boot. L. Neil and my other friend (whom many of you might know also'twas none other than Don L. Tiggre) showed me that was an "ism" to be proud of. Over the years, as I've read and explored and learned more, L. Neil's and my thinking has diverged very little, but it has in some areas. And in doing my own writing, I've had less and less time to read than I'd like, including L. Neil's voluminous output. So, when I learned that a collection of essays was forthcoming, I anticipated the book with more than usual interest. I was hoping to get a feel for my friend's thinking over a span of years, and to catch up with the things that have been uppermost on his mind between novels recently.

Neil Smith Here is Neil's very personal non-fiction book which he describes: You'll read "The American Lenin", a warm, fuzzy, loveable little article about Abraham Lincoln that for some reason never fails to start an international flame-war, whenever it's reposted on the internet. You'll learn the horrible and hilarious fate that befell my junior high school principal, the very first "bedwetting liberal" I ever met. You'll see what I did to Canada's leading political magazine when that scruffy little rag made the stupid mistake of calling me a racist. You'll find out why I believe that science fiction may be a dying art and what can still be done about it.

More About Lincoln
Lincoln
by L. Neil Smith
Very interesting ... My article " The American Lenin " was originally published in a large western newspaper a few years ago, and stirred up a reaction very similar to the one we're seeing presently, following JPFO's rerelease of it. I stand by the article now as I did then. In fact I've since learned that I was unnecessarily gentle with Lincoln, who committed many more evil and illegal acts than I was aware of at the time I wrote the article. After the controversy following the original publication, a retired professor of history from that state's university wrote to the newspaper to say that I was correct in everything I said about Lincoln and the War between the States. Unfortunately, the editors of the paper apparently felt the flap had gone on long enough, and they didn't print the letter. The simple fact is that if Lincoln had done what he did in any other country, we would

Rick's Reply to L. Neil Smith
After receiving Neil's endorsement, Rick sent the following thank you note. Thank you so much, L. Neil Smith. Your endorsement is a very great honor, based upon your own battle against a government that refuses to defend the Bill of Rights which each member of that government has sworn an oath to uphold. Your campaign to ensure that government honors that oath to defend the Constitution is absolutely inspiring. While in Austin, Texas, on March 23, 2002, I had the honor of being the featured guest speaker at one of the many Bill of Rights rallies across America, and after my too-long speech of 45 minutes, I was given a Bill of Rights pin from one of your supporters. I wore it the rest of the day, and it gave me great satisfaction when he told me it was from you. I am absolutely honored that you have taken notice of my campaign for the U.S. Senate from Colorado, the Bill of Rights rallies across America campaign, and the Million Gun March petition campaign. Each of these campaigns can have an effect to change the U.S. government and its UNCONSTITUTIONAL ways. I hope that your endorsement will mobilize Libertarians across the country to join our combined efforts to secure our birthright of liberty. This birthright was handed down to us by the founding fathers, but an ungrateful America does not understand the continued sacrifices that must be made by every generation of Americans to secure that guarantee of freedom.

The Nineteen Eleven Effect
by L. Neil Smith Politicians are a demonstrably unbright lot. Take Franklin Delano Roosevelt. I've known since I was a high school senior (a thousand years ago) and read George N. Crocker's Roosevelt's Road to Russia that FDR was a few crayons short of a box. Reprints of John T. Flynn I saw recently portray him as having had intelligence and character remarkably like those of Bill Clinton. If you took all the American presidents of the 19th and 20th centuries (the current occupant of the White House being no exception) and threw them in a pond, you could skim stupid for decades. The phenomenon isn't limited to presidents. Our political system
