It's harder and harder these days to tell a liberal from a conservative given the former category's increasingly blatant hostility toward the First Amendment, and the latter's prissy new disdain for the Second Amendment but it's still easy to tell a liberal from a libertarian. Just ask about either Amendment. If what you get back is a spirited defense of the ideas of this country's Founding Fathers, what you've got is a libertarian. By shameful default, libertarians have become America's last and only reliable stewards of the Bill of Rights. But if and this usually seems a bit more difficult to most people you'd like to know whether an individual is a libertarian or a conservative, ask about Abraham Lincoln. Suppose a woman with plenty of personal faults herself, let that be stipulated desired to leave her husband: partly because he made a regular practice, in order to go out and get drunk, of stealing money she had earned herself by raising chickens or taking in laundry; and partly because he'd already demonstrated a proclivity for domestic violence the first time she'd complained about his stealing. Now, when he stood in the doorway and beat her to a bloody pulp to keep her home, would we memorialize him as a hero? Or would we treat him like a dangerous lunatic who should be locked up, if for no other reason, then for trying to maintain the appearance of a relationship where there wasn't a relationship any more? What value, we would ask, does he find in continuing to possess her in an involuntary association, when her heart and mind had left him long ago?

Alan Parker: Career Profile Written by Neil Smith Like contemporaries Ridley Scott and Adrian Lyne, Alan Parker made his name in advertising before turning his hand to the big screen. Perhaps that explains why many of his films, from eye-catching debut "Bugsy Malone" (1976) to the blockbuster musical "Evita" (1996), have been lavish spectacles whose opulent visuals conceal a hollow dramatic core. Not that Parker is incapable of restraint. "Shoot the Moon" (1982) was a painfully raw study of a disintegrating marriage, while he let the music do the talking in Dublin-based crowd-pleaser "The Commitments" (1991). It's just that this London-born film maker tends to let scale and bombast take precedence over human drama - nowhere more so than in "Angela's Ashes" (1999), which took Frank McCourt's gentle memoir of growing up in 1930s Limerick and transformed it into an overblown tableau of sentimentalised Irish hardship.

A Note from L. Neil Smith: I hope no one's offended that we've added a small number of commercial banners to our site. Out of sheer kindness to me, webmaster Ken Holder has underwritten this splendid display out of his own pocket for several years. I think it's time he spent his money on himself and his lovely wife. The banners we've chosen are for interesting, reputable companies. I like the idea of doing my websurfing without leaving tracks. And of course I've been a Brigade Quartermaster customer for many years. When you visit our "online bookstore" and make a purchase, some of that money comes back to the Webley Page. I'd very much appreciate your clicking on these new banners and exploring the possibilities they present for yourself. Thank you, Neil

and Tunnel in the Sky . As would be the case years later with a certain little old Russian lady's name, he didn't know how to pronounce "Heinlein".
The Green Hills of Earth formed my first coherent vision of the future, establishing the historical context for my own life, convincing me (as kids must be if they're to turn out civilized) that, just as millions of human beings preceded me in past ages, so millions more will follow in ages to come. At the same time, Methuselah's Children revealed to me that, yes, I do want to live forever, and that such a thing, given time and the stubborn application of reason, might just be possible.
Between Planets taught me that a kid never knows when the demands of adulthood will tap him on the shoulder. There are worse things that could happen. Starman Jones taught me that the adult world makes about as much sense as the average train wreck, and that it's the first duty of anyone who aspires to be a whole human being to start re-making the world the way he wants it. Toward that end

Exclusive to TLE There is a common chemical test in which a small portion of the stuff being tested is heated to incandescence and the resulting light put through a prism device that spreads it out for examination. Dark "absorption lines" in the spectrum indicate what elements the stuff contains. War is like that, especially idiotic, unjust, and illegal wars like the one the United States government has chosen to fight now in Iraq, Afghanistan, and enough other places around the world to boggle what few remaining minds on the planet haven't been boggled already. War heats the populace, leaders and followers alike, to a kind of incandescence, until it becomes fairly easy to see what they're made of. In the present case, the experimental results are pretty damned discouraging. As you no doubt know, digital photos and movies have leaked back to the United States (if you consider Niagara Falls a leak) that show American military personnel treating Iraqui prisoners in way, if the victims were animals instead of human beings, they could be jailed for themselves. At the moment, I happen to have a family of raccoons living in the chimney of my living room fireplace. (Yes, I know this seems like a digression, but it isn't; stick with me for a moment.) I can't begin to describe the smell coming out of the fireplace, a vile combination of urine and fish. There are half a dozen chimney technicians in town, some claiming to handle animal removal, but they're all tree-hugging animal lovers of one kind or another, and proving to be extremely unhelpful.

The idea is probably as old as the Pharaohs, maybe even as old as Homo Erectus. Whenever and wherever old men have sent young men off to die, sooner or later someone has suggested that the old men should go first. Instead of paying a price, however, politicians are traditionally rewarded for screwing up. Like the man said, "War is the health of the State". And of the statists, too. War offers them expanded power and prestige, more stolen money to spend and less need to make excuses about it, greater control over society in general as well as every facet of an individual's life, and plenty of justifications for employing violence and threats to shut anybody up who objects. But just as nobody should be allowed to profit from a crime, no politician should be allowed to profit politically from plunging his country into war. It is time to ratify the Peace Amendment.

Saturday L Neil Smith responds Guest Writer (Terra, Sol) Science fiction On Thursday, February 06, 2003, Paul Marks of Northamptonshire wrote on Samizdata some views on the history of modern science fiction that I found very interesting (especially since they mentioned me). The following is not so much to correct him, as to add to what he said. Modern science fiction began as little more than another way to popularize left wing socialism. Both H.G. Wells and Edward Bellamy wrote socialist Utopias, and Wells wrote allegorical attacks on capitalism and individualism. Ironically, they (and Ayn Rand) inspired me to do what I do. I generally exclude Rand as a science fiction writer only because she didn't know that Anthem and Atlas Shrugged are science fiction and that science fiction is the "literature of ideas" that she erroneously believed detective fiction to be.

NRA Life Member. Smith is the author of many science fiction novels. In responding to a charge of racism, he posted a nice summary of his ouvre to Libernet, excerpted below. The hero of my first novel, The Probability Broach , and my second, The Venus Belt , is a full-blooded Ute Indian whose wife is a freckled strawberry blonde and whose best friend is the 137-year-old Mexican widow of a Russian prince. These are the books that also introduced sapient chimpanzees, gorillas, porpoises and killer whales to science fiction, all inhabitants of the "North American Confederacy", an amalgamation of the United States, Mexico , and Canada The brave protagonist of my third novel, Their Majesties' Bucketeers , is a meter-high, hairy, nine-legged, crab-like firefighting detective whose species has three genders. The viewpoint character of my fourth novel, The Nagasaki Vector , is Jewish, although he doesn't keep kosher as far as I know (I never asked him) and he speaks with a decidedly West Texican accent. He's followed constantly by three tiny aliens who think he's God, and his flying saucer has fallen in love with him. YD-038, the hero of my fifth novel
